When the going gets completely traditional and classical, then the music directors always turn to that voice, which simply never ceases to amaze with its range and its control over the notes and the ragas. It is the voice of Manna Dey, the last of the old school classical singers, with a firm grounding in the traditional art form of music of the sub continent. A singer whose voice is the natural resting place for such classical icons as “Bhay Bhanjanaa Vandanaa Sun Hamaari”, “Laaga Chunri Mein Daag”, “Sur Na Saje Kya Gaaun Main”, “Kaun Aaya Mere Mann Ke Dwaare”, “Poochho Na Kaise Main Ne Rain Bitaai”, “Tere Naina Talaash Karen Jise”, “Aayo Kahaan Se Ghanshyam”, “Udd Jaa Bhanwar”, “Chali Raadhe Raani Akhiyon Mein Paani”, “Banaawo Batiyaan Haaye Kaahe Ko Jhoothi”, “Tu Chhupi Hai Kahaan” – and many more such fabulous classical creations.

Remembering Manna Da on his birth anniversary (1st May). He would have been 95 today, had he not passed away in October last year.

KC Dey, the illustrious uncle of Manna Da, had lost his eyesight at a very young age of 13 years. For that reason, someone from the family would always be keeping him company. As it turned out, Manna Dey got to spend a lot of time with his uncle on this account. And thence started his own interest in music and singing. The mastery of the music was initiated by KC Dey, and later on refined by other teachers of repute like Ustad Dabir Khan. In 1940, when KC Dey made a decision to move to Bombay, Manna Da was the family’s automatic choice to accompany him on this journey.

This companionship was also instrumental in getting him initiated into the Hindi film industry. In 1943, when Vijay Bhatt approached KC Dey to sing for his film ‘Ram Rajya’, the latter turned down the offer with the reason that he does not sing playback for any other actor. Vijay Bhatt, having heard Manna Da sing on earlier occasions, then requested for his voice in his film. And thence happened the debut of this very talented singer, on to the Hindi film world.

In an active career that lasted well over six decades, Manna Dey has recorded well over 1400 songs in Hindi films, besides a very large number of film songs in Bangla and other regional languages. Plus a huger repertoire of non film songs. His last recording for Hindi films is as late as 2006, when he recorded “Duniya Waalon Ko Kuchh Bhi Nahin Khabar” for the film ‘Umar’.

For this post I present this fabulous semi classical piece from the film ‘Main Shaadi Karne Chalaa’. A film from 1962, that has become remarkable on account of its elusiveness and difficulty in tracing its video version or the complete set of songs. The film is from the banner of Wadia Movietone, and is directed by Roop K Shorey. The main cast of actors includes Is Johar, Sayeeda Khan, Rajendra Nath, Feroz Khan, Praveen Chaudhary, Tabassum, Malika, Mumtaz, Badri Prasad, Durga Khote, Manju, Prem Chopra, Vivek. By some accounts, this is possibly the debut film for Feroz Khan.

The film has a set of nine delightful songs, all penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The music composition is by the inimitable Chitragupt. Three
songs of this film are already showcased on this blog. Here is the fourth song to come on board from this film.

Listen to this wonderful creation from more than five decades ago. And simply wonder about the quality of the creators of that era.

Enjoy.

Well, this movie was an enjoyable movie. It was remade later, with Govinda as hero.
I.S. Johar & Sayeeda Khan were hero heroine. Sayeeda had several unmarried sisters, so it was not possible for the pair to marry before the marriages of other sisters. Johar searched for other grooms & at the end he succeeded.
Feroze Khan was paired with Mumtaz, one of the sisters.
This was not the debut film of Feroze. He had acted in several films before- Didi, Reporte Raju & others.

Nayan ji,

Thanks for the overview of the film. Amongst my circle of friends, this is one of the most keenly searched film. It seems some one has the video. YouTube carries a one minute video clip from the title song. Someone is obvioulsy trying to capture attention with a teaser. :)

Also, thanks for pointing out to ‘Didi’ from 1959. Could this be the debut film for Feroze Khan?

Yes ‘Didi’ can be called his first big film, as he was paired with Jayshree, mother of Rajashri, in the movie. Earlier to ‘Didi’ he had acted in several films as an extra! ‘Hum Sab Chor Hain’ was one of them.

Thanks Sudhir-ji for this beautiful composition, a ‘chhota khayaal’ in Raaga Bhairavi. Of course, Manna-ji was the last stalwart from the golden music period, for classical renderings, and the void by his recent death is not filled yet..

Bharat ji,

Appreciate your comments. Good to hear from you.
