The 1960 film ‘Chhabeeli’ is not well remembered or talked about much. It was planned as the launch vehicle for Tanuja, by her mother Shobhna Samarth. Whatever else may have been the performance and success factors of the film otherwise, there is one aspect that is unique and significant about this film. Which also makes one wonder about the peculiarities of the cinema world, and its stereotyping. The film has a very delightfully mesmerizing song – “Ae Mere Hamsafar, Rok Apni Nazar” , which is sung by Nutan herself under the music direction of Snehal Bhatkar. This song, along with another equally mesmerizing duet of Nutan and Hemant Kumar – “Lehron Pe Lehar, Ulfat Hai Jawaan” , make this film and its music worth remembering. Both the music director and the lyricist, a gentleman by the name S Ratan, have excelled in this creating these two songs. And the rendering of these songs by Nutan – ah, that is just a class by itself.

This is the wonder that I think about often. Why did she not sing more frequently in films? If these two songs are any evidence, she would have made a good singing star. Anyway, these are speculations that cannot be answered.

The significant aspect of this film that I mentioned above is that Nutan has sung more songs in this film. Out of the seven songs listed in Geet Kosh, her voice appears in six of them. Four of them are duets and two are solo. Earlier these songs were not easily available online, but as I checked today, most of them have now been posted on YouTube – all the duets and the above mentioned solo. There is a second solo number that I am uploading today, as a celebration.

Remembering Nutan on the anniversary of her birth today (4th June).

A little while back, Arun ji has posted a series on Nutan. As I went back to check, I realize, gosh, it is almost a year now. The last song of that series “Tujhe Kaisa Dulha Bhaaye Ree Baanki Dulhaniya” was posted on 4th July last year, that is eleven months ago. And the rest of series was spread out over the prior few weeks. The entire series was full of information about this fine actress.

Born in 1936, into a family that was already well involved in the film industry, it was but natural for her to follow her mother’s footsteps and take on a career as a leading lady and later a character artist on screen. Her filmography would be in excess of 70 films across a little less than four decades. She has portrayed some of the most powerful roles on screen. Her performances in films like ‘Sujata’ (1959) and ‘Bandini’ (1963) are unforgettable. In her entire career, she was awarded six Filmfare awards – for ‘Seema’ in 1955, ‘Sujata’ in 1959, ‘Bandini’ in 1963, ‘Milan’ in 1967, ‘Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki’ in 1978 and ‘Meri Jung’ in 1985. This last one was in the supporting actress category. (Her six Filmfare trophies is a record that she shares with Jaya Bhaduri/Bachchan).

An interesting thing about her career is that just about a decade into it, she got married. She remains one of the very few unique instances wherein her career as a leading lady remained practically un-affected by matrimony. She was married in 1959 (to Lieutenant Commander Rajnish Behl). As her filmography shows, she continued to be a lead actress well into the 1970s.

For today’s post, I present this rare solo rendition in Nutan’s own voice. The film ‘Chhabeeli’ is a 1960 produced under the banner of Shobhna Pictures, and is produced and directed by Shobhna Samarth. The cast of actors includes Nutan, Tanuja, KC Mehra, KN Singh, Helen, Iftekhar, Agha, Dhawan, Gulab among others. There are seven songs in this film – actually six since the song “Lehron Pe Lehar” ), is a multiple version song (solo by Hemant Da and duet by Hemant Da and Nutan). Music is by Snehal Bhatkar and lyrics are by S Ratan.

Not certain how the song is picturized, but is sounds like a dance song. A very peppy and foot tapping number that has been handled so well by Nutan.

Listen and enjoy.

Sudhirji,
Lovely post.
She also sang with M Kapoor in the same film: O my darling o my sweetie
She also sang in Hamari Beti-1950; Yaadgar-1970; Lo mai aa gaya-1999
Nutan fav MD was OP. He would arrange to deliver his latest albums to her sending her into raptures.
She died of cancer like Rajendra Kumar

Thank you very much Sudhir-ji and Nitin-ji for the information on songs rendered by Nutan-ji. Knew only two famous songs from Chhabeeili thus far!!

Sudhirji,
Thanks again for another post and remembering Nutan on her B’day/anniv. I respect Waheeda Rehman, Mala Sinha, VMala, Madhubala, Sharmila Tagore, Jaya Bhaduri and few more actresses for their performances and contribution in Hindi Cinema, but Nutan holds very special place in my heart (like Rafiji) which will never be replaced by any other actress. (This is just my personal opinion/likes) Other movies that I adore of hers are Saraswatichandra, Tere Ghar Ke Samne, Khaandan, Anari and few more to add. Her challenging roles in Saudagar with Amitji, who was six years younger than her and in the movie, Karma with Dilip Saab who was thirteen years older than her proves the versatility of this fine actress, that the Hindi Cinema had produced. She will always be remembered by her fans.
Thanks again.

I remember one off-beat movie namely KASTURI(1980->starring Nutan, Parikshit Sahni,Sadhu Meher,Sri ram Lagoo),shown on doordarshan many years ago, and I vaguely remember NUTAN sang one song in that movie,
IMDB.COM confirms the above fact , any other HELP/confirmation! ?

and a video clip of movie Kasturi

If I am not wrong Mithun Chakraborthy acted in a role of Adivaasi, Please correct me If I am wrong.

I still her remember Nutan`s fantastic performance in Doordarshan classic serial
“Mujrim Haazir(1988-alongwith Utpal dutt)

Nutan in person was an altogether gentle and ethereal person. She was a wonderful singer – pity she didn’t sing more. After more or less retiring, she would compose her own bhajans and devotional songs and sing them at family gatherings. I was privileged to attend some of these since she was my wife’s cousin (we are close to the family, esp Tanuja). We miss her. BTW as far as I know, all prints of Chhabili were lost. I only have my memories of the life on a big ship depicted in it, lovely music, and for once, K.N.Singh not being a villain!
