Atul Song-A-Day 10K Song Milestone Celebrations – 10
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -

10,000 songs! I’m very glad, that Atul asked me to supply a post for the countdown. Moreover I think it is a very good idea to let us introduce each other, this way, I think the Atulblog family comes to know each other better and also thus come closer. A family, which knows each other better, sings better.

I think this is also a good opportunity to thank Atul for starting this blog. He is for me an example, what a person can do, when he/she sets his/her mind to it. It started as a song a day and now it is many songs a day. It reminds me of a stream, a brook which starts somewhere in the mountains playfully, gurgling, flowing carelessly downwards. Soon it meets other streams and is a big river.

On the face of it, it sounds very simple to publish an article a day, but the behind-the-scenes work is a big one. To check the spellings of the lyrics, give them the necessary tags, put them in order, put them in the correct table, check if the songs listed under the film are right, putting them in different types, is all much work and this he manages alongside his work, family and pet dogs and a cat and not to forget the managing of two homes. Hats off to you, dear Atul!

As I sat and was looking up for a song for the 10K countdown, I was wondering, which song to contribute. Then I remembered that in the comments section, we had already celebrated the lala-honaa of Padosan. But it is not so, I had completely forgotten this beautiful Manna Dey solo. It also fits in very well in the countdown, as we are beckoning the magic number of 10,000 or are being beckoned by it; whichever way you like looking at it.

Padosan (1968), one of Hindi film industry’s favourite comedies, remains entrenched in the memory of the movie-fans even in this decade. Saira Banu often tells in her interviews, that this was her grandma’s favourite movies. All the songs of this movies were great hits of their times. But among them this jewel of a song gets quite often forgotten. This semi-classical song, often offered to Manna Dey, is indeed a seldom-appreciated song.

It starts of with Carnatic sound, but the main body is surely Hindustani classical. The song nevertheless doesn’t remain true to any of these traditions, jumping from one level to the other. Though it may sound like hollow vocal acrobatics, Manna Dey gives every word and note its special flavor and emotions, ranging from sadness, melancholy to pure madness. Hats off to this great artiste for accomplishing this masterwork and also to the composer. On the surface it may look as if it is just a parody of the classical traditions of India, but it needs a connoisseur to pull this piece off.
Enjoy!

Excellent choice, Harv.

I love Manna Dey. And this song showcases his wonderful talent.

Thank you, Ava!
A singer par excellence, our Mannada!

The film and its songs are all our favorite ! thanks Harvey ji … it reminds me our discussion on ‘mere pyaari bindu’ from the same film :)

I remember that as well. You haven’t posted your performance of the song “meri pyaari bindu”! :)

I won a prize of Mixer and pan for guessing this song in a competition. They showed a video clip just before this song and asked a huge audience of 2,000 people which song will follow after the clip. All songs of the movie were recited except this song. It was tough one for the general people. Great song.

I also had forgotten this song. Raja posted this song once and thus became aware of it once again.

This song wasn’t posted yet? I just love this song. In fact I love all the songs of this movie.
Nice write-up, Harvey. I like the analogy of a stream joining other streams and becoming a river. :-)

I have to thank you for reminding me of this song, dear Raja!
Thanks for you kind words. We are all behti dhaaraas, aren’t we?
I had to listen to this song once agian today and was just marvelling at Mannada’s technique!

Thank you for refreshing my memory Harvey ji.
