MISSING GEMS FROM THE GOLDEN 50s…. Song No….5
————————————————————————————

Today’s song is from the 1955 film ‘Faraar’.

We have already discussed the happenings in Hindi film industry in 1955, in the previous episode.  Name of this film had not featured anywhere, simply because it was neither a famous film nor a very successful film.  Its music too was nothing to write home about.  Even in such a film, we find a gem or a song special for other reasons.  I selected this film song for few reasons.

Faraar or Dev Anand in Goa (1955) is one of Dev Anand’s lesser known films. It is one of those films which had a patriotic theme.  From the very beginning, because of his handsome looks and an easy going playboy image, this kind of story was a total misfit for him.  Dev Anand, a Revolutionary?  Unimaginable!

Dev Anand’s personality was a boon and a curse to him. Barring roles of a happy go lucky lover boy in some or the other form, he was a misfit to any other roles in film genres like say Historical, Mythological, Horror, Spy, Devotional or as a Patriot revolutionary or even as a farmer donning a dhoti for that matter.  Impressed by his popularity, Gregory Peck styles and handsome looks, the Hollywood giant 20th Century Fox made a film in 1970, with him in the lead role of a spy – a la James Bond style.  The name of the film was ‘The Evil Within’ and the heroine was a Vietnamese beauty named Kieu Chinh.  The film flopped so badly abroad that it was decided not to release it in India to save Dev Anand’s image here.  The film was dubbed and released in Philippines with a new title, ‘Passport to Danger’.  There too the film bombed miserably.

Some of his contemporaries, however, did patriotic and revolutionary roles, and succeeded.  Dilip Kumar did ‘Shaheed’ (1948), Ashok Kumar did ‘Samadhi’ (1950), Kishore Kumar acted as a revolutionary in the film ‘Andolan’ (1952) – of course, he did not have an image by then, so to say.  Dev Anand did a revolutionary’s role in ‘Faraar’.  Only Raj Kapoor is not known to have done any such role, to my knowledge.

The second reason is that today’s song is an ‘Anokhe Bol’ song and it is sung by the music director Anil Biswas himself.  In his entire career, I do not find any other such a song sung by Anil Biswas.  In a way it is a hidden Gem.  HFGK does not mention either the record number or the singer’s name.  So I started my search to find out the singer’s name.  My search finally ended with the famous record collector and HFM historian Shri Giridharilal Vishwakarma ji, who, after checking his collection informed me that the singer indeed is Anil Biswas.  So it was confirmed.

For these 2 reasons I selected this film song.

Dev Anand was a favorite hero of many generations.  (Although the generations after the mid 1970s have often asked – ‘who is this chap churning out boring movies’ 🙂 ).  In those days, I was no exception and loved to see his films without fail.  Keeping the collar high was a fashion among the young and the happening crowd in those days.  I like almost all his films of the 1950s.  He was so busy during that decade that he did 5 films in 1955 and in 1960, did a record 8 films which averages to almost 1 film every 45 days!

So much has already been written on Dev Anand that there is hardly anything that is not known about him. Nevertheless, here are some trivia which might interest the readers….

  1. His household pet name in childhood was “Chiru”.
  2. He was advised NOT to wear Black suit in any event as young women used to faint seeing him so handsome in it.
  3. His love affair with Suraiya started on the sets of Vidya (1948), after he saved her from drowning, while shooting for the song “Kinaare Kinaare Chale Jaayenge”.
  4. He gave a diamond ring worth Rs. 3000 to her, when he proposed her on the sets of Jeet (1949).
  5. He refused the offers to do films like ‘Junglee’ (1961), ‘Teesri Manzil’ (1966) and ‘Zanjeer’ (1973), because he didn’t like the producers.
  6. His famous checkered beret cap was bought in Copenhagen, Denmark, during a shooting stint.
  7. When he threw his cap to the cheering crowd, outside the Swastik Cinema in Bombay, it was caught by a young girl. After 50 years he met his Lady Dentist, who was the granddaughter of that girl!
  8. His mentor and idol was his elder brother Chetan Anand. Dev copied his mannerisms and styles, and NOT Gregory Peck, as is believed popularly.

The cast of the film ‘Faraar’ includes Dev Anand, Geeta Bali, Krishnakant, Manmohan Krishna, Shravan Kumar etc. The director is Phani Muzumdar and the music direction is by Anil Biswas.  The film is produced by Tara Anand and Pradeep Moitra for Unique Pictures.  The film had only 5 songs.  Today’s song will be its 4th song to be posted on this Blog.  The story of Faraar is summarized below.

Gora, Ajay, Anjali and her husband, Bipin are amongst a group of freedom-fighters actively involved in trying to force the British to leave Hindustan. Their plans to carry out bomb explosions are foiled when Bipin betrays them and is even ready to identify them in Court. During the Court hearing, Gora (Dev Anand) shoots and injures him, and he as well as Anjali and Ajay (Shravan Kumar) flee to Portuguese-occupied Goa. Gora, who gets shot, recuperates in the clinic of a rebel doctor (Manmohan Krishna) while the others lie low. He is instructed to masquerade as the husband of Nurse Meenakshi (Poonam) and after his recovery befriends Kitty, a dancer/singer (Geeta Bali). Through her admirer, he acquires property where they propose to manufacture medicines and explosives. But nothing will prepare him and the others for the shocks and treachery that await them.  Gora and Kitty fight out all odds and triumph in the end. (577)

The video song is filmed on Gora’s friend Ajay (Shravan Kumar) in the train while they are proceeding to Goa.

Arun ji,

I really enjoyed doing the lyrics, and had a lot of laughter and fun as I was transcribing them. A classic piece, akin to some of the best Kishore Kumar songs.

Yes, Dev Saab was very much an urban debonair personality. After a handful of roles in rural settings, almost all prior to 1950, he never returned back to the rural setting, as in, a rural personality. He did appear in stories that revolved around the village scene – ‘Ek Ke Baad Ek (1960), ‘Tere Mere Sapne’ (1971) etc., but in all cases he was a city educated dashing handsome young man, never to be found in rural attire. After 1950, I think the only one example is ‘Insaaniyat’, which was necessarily a period costume drama.

Or the other instance I can recall is the film ‘Paying Guest’ (1957), in which, if I remember correctly, he wore the formal Punjabi pajamas, in some scenes, and also donned the outfit of a Lukcknowi nawaab, as he goes in disguise to Nutan’s home as Mirza Saheb, looking for rental accommodation.

One more ‘differently’ attired role by him is ‘Munim ji’ (1954).

He has played the detective / lawyer / police officer role often enough, but you are right, never in the role of a James Bond type spy. Incidentally, now that you mentioned it, I just received the film ‘The Evil Within’ about a month back, courtesy Dr. ML Kapur (from Norfolk, USA).

Talking about a patriotic role for him, the other movie that comes to mind is the 1952 film ‘Zalzalaa’.
