Of late I have discussed quite a few “stage performace” songs of Hindi movies. These movies typically have the lead actress of the movie performing a dance in an auditorium which is invariably sold out. Secondly, the hero of the movie is invariably among the audience. He in fact is in the front row of the audience. To this day I have not been able to find out how the hero manages to get tickts/pass for the front row of such performance even though he is does not play a politician/ administrator/ VIP who normally get to occupy front row on such occasions. I have in fact seen Amitabh Bachchan getting a front row seat for Nirupa Roy and Mukri getting front row seats for himself and his six burqa clad daughters in a song of “Amar Akbar Anthoni”. No, neither Amitabh Bachchan not Mukri are top administrators/ politicians of the town, but they still occupy the front row. 🙂 VIP culture is conspicuous by its absence in such picturisations. 🙂

There have been some honourable exceptions where the lead actor is seen seated in one of the middle rows. But otherwise front row is reserved for him in most such occasions.

Suppose the hero is busy in his day job while the dance performance is on ? Even then the hero finds ways to be present at the performance, even if it may not be in the front row.

Take the case of this song from “Bandhe Haath” (1973) for instance. Here Amitach Bachchan plays a thief and he is on the run after stealing diamonds. Of all the places in the down, he naturally runs inside the auditorium where Mumtaz is giving a dance performance. Amitabh Bachchan hided himself in the women’s make up room and the gentlemanly policewaala (played by Ajit) not does enter there. So while the dance performance is being performed on stage by Mumtaz and others, Amitabh Bachchan too is busy playing chor- police in the backgound. 🙂

Here is this lovely song from “Bandhe Haath”(1973) which is sung by Lata and lip synced by Mumtaz. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

Lyrics

ye kaun aaj aaya
mera dil churaane
mujhe
mujhe
mujhe
haaye mujhe
mujhe loot kar
meri duniya basaane
ye kaun aaj aaya
mera dil churaane
ye kaun aaj aaya
mera dil churaane
mujhe
mujhe
mujhe loot kar
meri duniya basaane
ye kaun aaj aaya
mera dil churaane
ye kaun aaj aaya
mera dil churaane

mere sanam ke aane ki ye ada dekhna
ke peechhe phire jahaan
uske liye
chadhta hua usika nasha
ye aankhon mein hai
mera husn hai jawaan
uske liye
duniya kitni rangeeli hai
jaise maine kuch peeli hai
duniya kitni rangeeli hai
jaise maine kuch peeli hai
giri, main giri
thhaamna o zamaane
ye kaun aaj aaya
mera dil churaane
mujhe
haaye mujhe
mujhe lootkar meri duniya basaane
ye kaun aaj aaya
mera dil churaane
ye kaun aaj aaya
mera dil churaane

aa mere dil ke mehmaan
aa machalta hai
meri nas nas mein beqaraar
haaye tera pyaar
sanson mein dekh
arma koi machaata
hai ek halchal si baar baar
haaye tera pyaar
tu kya aaya meri mehfil mein
ek shola sa bhadka dil mein
tu kya aaya meri mehfil mein
ek shola sa bhadka dil me
ke main bhi shaama si lagi jhilmilaane
ye kaun aaj
ye kaun aaj aaya mera dil churaane
mujhe
mujhe
mujhe loot kar meri duniya basaane
ye kaun aaj aaya
mera dil churaane
ye kaun aaj aaya
mera dil churaane
