Genius of Jaidev – 36
———————————

1969 film ‘Jiyo Aur Jeene Do’ was produced by Apsara Arts, Bombay (now Mumbai) and directed by B Mastaan. The star cast consisted of Tanuja, Shailesh Kumar, Jeevan, Helen, Mohan Choti, Chand Usmani, Uma Dutt, Kundan, Meenakshi etc. Jaidev composed the music and there were two lyricists for the film, Naqsh Layalpuri and Hasrat Jaipuri.

This song from the film, written by Hasrat Jaipuri, is sung by Manna Dey, Sulakshana Pandit and chorus. The initial music of dhol–taasha gives the impression that a ‘Laavni’  influenced song will follow. Sulakshana ji’s melodious voice is hardly heard as she is one of the many chorus singers. If I had any say during the recording of the song, I would have requested Manna Da to leave at least one or two lines for my ‘Guru-Bhagini’  Sulakshana ji.  Manna Dey being a champion for singing ‘Deshbhakti’ songs, must have recorded this song with a single take, even with closed eyes!

A veritable song of the earth. Although the video of this song is not available, it is likely not wrong to surmise that this is group dance song that is picturized in a village setting.  The words of the song tell of the earth, the people connected with it; they tell about the farms, and the rains; and the promise that they (the farmers) will ensure no one goes hungry.  A song that is blended with the earth, and the villages, and the village people of our country.

Hearing this song brings to mind many other such songs that we all have heard over the years. But the song that most strikingly comes to mind is the one which is kind of ringing in the second antaraa of this song.  Yes, right, I am thinking of the iconic “Hariyaala Saawan Dhol Bajaata Aaya” from the 1953 film ‘Do Beegha Zameen’, whose words are echoing in this song – a reprise that says happy days will come again. 🙂

This is a ‘Yippee’ song, as the film ‘Jiyo Aur Jeene Do’ joins the ‘All songs covered films’ list.

Since I am going to take-up the next film ‘Sapna’ as my effort to put as many possible Jaidev’s creation on our blog, I have already one Lata’s and one Usha Mangeshkar’s songs with me.  I request ALL the music collectors and expert searchers, reading this, to locate and gift me with Krishna Kalle, Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey and Lakshmi Shankar’ songs from the film.

dharti hamaari dharti hai

ye dharti hamaari dharti hai
hum isko swarg banaayenge

ye dharti hamaari dharti hai
hum isko swarg banaayenge
is mein pyaar ke beej bichhaayenge
in kheton pe jawaani laayenge
kyun ke
dharti hamaari dharti hai

is mitti se hum ne janam liya
is mitti mein mil jaana hai
is mitti se hum ne janam liya
is mitti mein mil jaana hai
khaate hain kasam hum sab iski
ab duniya ko dikhlaana hai
khaate hain kasam hum sab iski

hariyaala saawan baadal ka phir
dhol bajaata aayega

hariyaala saawan baadal ka phir
dhol bajaata aayega
rangeen dhanak ki murli par
phir saawan geet sunaayega
phir saawan geet sunaayega
phir saawan geet sunaayega
aansoo ke daane rokenge. .ey. .ey. .ey. .ey. .eyy
aansoo ke daane rokenge
hum dil ke phool khilaayenge

ओ ओss ओ ओss ओssss
