O preetam pyaare chhod chali ghar baar

Posted by: Atul on: July 7, 2011

In Hindi movies, there used to be a case where a character would decide to leave his/her family/neighbours/friends for ever, not knowing where he/she would go. I call such songs as “chal ud ja re panchhi” song, in honour of the iconic song from “Bhaabhi” (1957) that depicted this scenario.

“Inquilaab” (1956) is a movie whose songs were discovered by me only recently. And what music this song had !

I have posted three songs from “Mirza Ghalib” (1954) in the past. It seems that there are readers who are aware of more songs from this movie.

In this blog, I post many well known songs from the past, but I get the most satisfaction when I post lesser known songs that very few people know about.

I have mentioned the fact that most people (at least I) are only aware of the more popular songs from a movie and they often miss out on some real gems that the lesser known songs of these movies often turn out to be.

I had never heard this song before. I heard this song for the first time only just now. And what a song it is.

Lo ham chale chhod ke ghar

I had never heard about this movie called “Meri Bhaabhi” (1969). This movie, going by its name was a family drama.

Jaa re jaa re ud jaa re panchchi

When I read the title of the song, I thought it must be a clone of the “chal ud ja re panchi” song. And I was not expecting much.

Hum chhod chale hain mehfil ko

The hero Joy Mukherjee is leaving his home for ever, and certainly there has got to be some major reason behind this drastic step. His wife appears suitably chastened, repentent, etc, but that is too little too late, the decision has been taken and there is no going back.
