Kishore Kumar was around in the Hindi movie playback scene for two decades from 1948 to 1968 but all these while he was on the fringes. But a combination of many circumstances, that are well chronicled, ensured that changes of epic proportions took place in the Hindi movies schemes of things in late 1960s. Whe the commotion was over and things settled down, the old order had changed giving way to the new. The old timers (heroes, singers, music directors) suddenly found themselves upstaged and evicted from the scene in the new order.

“Nishan” (1965) is a B grade film, produced under the banner of Wadia Brothers Productions, Bombay, and directed by Aspi Irani. The star line up include Sheikh Mukhtaar,Sanjeev Kumar, Nazima, Prem Chopra, Helen, Mukri, Sulochana, Heeralal, Shammi, Ratnamala, Uma Dutt, Mitthoo Miyan etc. The film boasts of some very hummable and memorable songs. Lyrics for the songs are created by Jawed Anwar and the music composition is by Usha Khanna. It is interesting to note that Jawed Anwar is the pen name of Manohar Lal Khanna, the real life father of Usha Khanna.
This song is picturized on a band of vigilante horse riders, led by Sheikh Mukhtar. In the first antaraa, Sheilkh Mukhtar is accompanied by a child artist, who transforms into an adult as the first antaraa is coming to a close. So in the space of less than a minute, a small child of about 14, 15 years becomes an adult Sanjeev Kumar. Usha Khanna has used a combination of voices to show this transition, going from a child’s voice (sung by herself), to a chorus of the the child and adult voices for a couple of lines (herself for the child and Mahendra Kapoor for the adult), and then from the next line, Mahendra Kapoor only is singing. What a way to grow up; literally on the back of a horse all the time. The riders are singing a song of courage and rousing emotions, pledging to keep together as a group.
A very rousing rendition by the best combination of high note singing, that is Manna Dey and Mahendra Kapoor. Enjoy this wonderful melody.
