Just out of curiosity, I scanned the blog, for the listing of songs that have been composed by Chitragupt. And I find a peculiar thing. As a composer, Chitragupt started his career in 1946, and continued to be active till the early 80s. On the blog we have just about a dozen of his songs listed, for the first 10 years of his career (1946-1955), with no songs listed for the first four years i.e. from 1946 to 1949. When I tried to check online, I find that actually very little of his works are available online from this period. But still there are some. And I will try to post some of them over the coming few days.

Phoolon se dosti hai

In old Hindi movies, especially those of 1950s and 1960s, we often see songs picturised on “Taanga”, also called “Tonga”, not to be confused with a country of this name.
“Taanga” was actually a mode of public transport in India those days. With time, Taanga has all but vanished as a mode of public transport in India. But they have not become extinct. One can still find them in some small towns of India. I have noticed them in small places in Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh etc. In fact, one can see them in Fatehpur Sikri near Agra in UP. I recall that we (I, my wife and daughter) actually rode on a Taanga to go to Fatehpur Sikri a few years ago.

As I see in the “some stats” page, Lyricist poet Majrooh Sultanpuri has 525 songs in the blog, which is the highest so far for a lyricist in the blog. The word “Majrooh” could not have been his real name. It is the “takkhallus” (Pen name) of the poet. “Majrooh” means injured/pained or a someone broken hearted and in pain. Others may have a different view of this words meaning, but I hate to go to online dictionaries to find meanings of urdu words. I would rather go by the feel.

This song is one that I thought I had already discussed in the blog. The first time I became aware of O P Nayyar was in mid 1970s, when I read about him in a Hindi magazine (Dharmyug, perhaps, where it was mentioned that he made a successful career for himself without using Lata Mangewshkar’s voice even once). This got by curiosity roused. I found out that “Naya Daur” (1957) was a breakthrough movie for him as well as for many others associated with the movie. Ao I became aware of all the songs of this movie. One can see the lyrics of several songs from this movie noted down in a a diary where I used to note down the lyrics of songs that I liked those days. One can say that my diary showed which songs I liked in 1970s. And I liked the songs of “Naya Daur” (1957).
