When Alam Ara was released in 1931, people were awe-struck. Additionally, there were 7 songs in it. It was a novelty that the moving images on screen not only talked but they also sang. Alam Ara was lauded as a Landmark. One would imagine that there must have been a spate of Talkie films in its wake, but surprisingly only 24 in 1931, 61 in 1932 and 76 films in 1933 were made. This was because silent films were still being made till september 1934. Further the new filmmakers were yet to join the field. After 1934 the number crossed 100 and never stopped again.

‘Dilli Ka Dada’ is a film from 1962. As I started to write this piece, just wondered, how many films have been made whose names are based on city names, referring to someone from there. At first I thought, may not be many, but as I start to think about it, just in a couple of minutes, I could identify ‘Baghdad Ka Chor’ (1932, 1946, 1955), ‘Hyderabad Ki Naazneen’ (1952), ‘Arab Ka Saudagar’ (1956), ‘Dilli Ka Thug’ (1958), ‘Bombay Ki Billi’ (1960), ‘Bambai Ka Babu’ (1960), ‘Bombay Ka Chor’ (1962). And I am sure there are many more yet to be listed. Let’s see how many more such names our readers can up with. :)

Anyways, so ‘Dilli Ka Dada’ is film produced under the banner of Film Saagar, Bombay, and is directed by RS Tara. Two poets share the writing for lyrics for this film. They are Sahir Ludhianvi and Jaan Nissaar Akhtar. The music is composed by N Dutta. The star cast of this film includes Sheikh Mukhtar (of course, any film whose title contains the word ‘Dada’), Shekhar, Sahira, Mukri, Nishi, Leela Mishra, Ram Singh, Siddhu, Kumar, Johnny Whisky, Jeevankala, Ravikant, Bhola, Chaube, Kapoor, Lala etc. (hmmm, so many one word names).

This particular song is penned by Jaan Nissaar Akhtar, and the singing voices are those of Mohammed Rafi and, yes, Usha Khanna. Known better for being a music director, this is one of the very few songs that Usha Khanna has sung in the films, and somewhat more special, as she is singing under the direction of another composer. There is possibly a third voice in this song, that sings some words. This third voice is not identified as yet; again requesting other knowledgeable readers to help identify this voice.

The song itself is a racy rapid composition, and the lovers are praising and extolling each other with superlatives, and what they mean to each other. The exuberance sets in as soon as you hear the first line rendered by Rafi Saab, and the tempo just continues all through the song. A very entertaining song full of joy and hurrah – it is really fun to hear. Enjoy.

chehraa kyaa gulaab hai, jalwaa be-hisaab hai
tera kya jawaab hai, bhayee mashaa-allaah

Your face, is a wonderful rose flower
It’s splendor is immeasurable
There is none equal to you
It is the will of God

sad’qeh
tu meraa shabaab hai, mera aaftaab hai
tera kya jawaab hai, bayee mashaa-allaah

You are the glory of my youth
You are the sun for me
There is none equal to you
It is the will of God

mashaa-allaah = As God has willed
sad’qeh = variation of sad’qah – an offering or a sacrifice for divine favors
(NOTE: this word is used in many songs and dialogues. The context is that I sacrifice myself for the divine grace to be upon you).

loshay = a Pashto word meaning ‘hurraah’
walwaleh = excitement, passion, fervor
gilli = an expression of happiness; joy (likely of Arabic, or even Hebrew origin)

phool hai anaar kaa, chaand hai bahaar kaa
jhoomti nigaah mein, rang hai khumaar kaa
tu hi meri zindagi, tu hi mera khwaab
tera kya jawaab hai, bhayee mashaa-allaah

You are a flower of pomegranate
You are the moon in springtime
In jovial eyes full of cheer
You the color of stupor
You are my life
You are my dream
There is none equal to you
It is the will of God

aankh tujh se ja mili, har haseen adaa mili
jo teri nazar utthi, mere dil se ja mili
ik taraf hai shokiyaan, ik taraf hijaab hai
tera kya jawaab hai, bhayee mashaa-allaah

My glance met with yours
And I got (from you)
All the elegant flairs and grace
And your rising glances
Settled into my heart
There is mischief one hand
And yet a coy bashfulness, on the other
There is none equal to you
It is the will of God

(NOTE: ‘hijaab’ is the veil, or the burqaa. The poet says, there is mischief (shokhiyan) and alongside there is bashfulness (as indicated by ‘hijaab’, i.e. being covered, being restrained), both behaviors are being expressed simultaneously).

I have stumbled upon yet another “new” song for me. The movie is called “aao pyaar karen”. It has Joy Mukherjee and Saira Bano as the lead actors and this is a movie from 1964, so one can safely assume that the story line has got to be similar to Shammi Kapoor movies of those days.
