January 28th is the 75th birth day of Suman Kalyanpur (nee Hemadi). She was born on January 28, 1937 in Dhaka in undivided Bengal where she spent her early childhood. In some places, her maiden surname is spelt as Hemadey probably having something to do with her Bengal connection. Her family hailed from Hemadi village in Udipi district of Karnataka and belonged to Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin community which has given actors/directors to Hindi cinema such as Guru Dutt, Girish Karnad, Shyam Benegal, Leena Chandavarkar, Deepika Padukone to name a few. Her family migrated from Dhaka to Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1943. Talat Mehmood noticed Suman Kalyanpur during one of her concerts and was very much impressed with her singing. He agreed to sing a duet with her for the film Darwaaza (1954). The song was “ek dil do hain talabgaar” which was her first song as a playback singer for Hindi films.

Suman Kalyanpur had to contend with remaining under the shadow of Lata Mangeshkar mainly because many in the Hindi film industry felt that her voice was too close to that of Lata Mangeshkar. Under the circumstances, Suman Kalyanpur used to be called upon to sing mostly when Lata Mangeshkar was not available for song recording. For instance, Suman Kalyanpur sang a number of duets with Mohammed Rafi when Lata Mangeshkar was not singing with him during the late 60s. She rendered many solo songs which are remembered even now. Some of these songs have already been discussed in this blog. Suman Kalyanpur was bestowed with Lata Mangeshkar Award for 2009 by the Government of Maharashtra.

January 28th also happens to be the death anniversary of maestro O P Nayyar. I was keen to discuss a song which has been sung by Suman Kalyanpur and set to music by O P Nayyar. Having known that she had not sung any song for O P Nayyar except a few lines in “mohabbat karlo ji barlo” in film AAR PAR (1954), it was a futile exercise for finding such a song. However, my search resulted in getting me one of her rare songs “koi pukaare dheere se tujhe” from film MANGU (1954). This film had two music directors – Mohammed Shafi and O P Nayyar and this song was set to music by Mohammed Shafi. When I heard this song for the first time , I liked it so much that I felt that this was an appropriate song to be discussed on the occasion of her 75th birthday.

The song is a lori written by Saba Afghani. The humming at the beginning and mixing with mukhda of the song, Suman Kalyanpur’s rendition in her soft voice, Mohammed Shafi ‘s tune and the orchestration create the atmosphere for a lori song. This was Suman Kalyanpur’s first solo song for a Hindi film and even at this stage, her voice resembled that of Lata Mangeshkar. Perhaps, this may be one ofthe reasons as to why she sang only one song with Lata Mangeshkar “kabhi aaj kabhi kaal kabhi parson”, in the film CHAAND (1959).

Comments on YT indicate that this song was originally slated to be recorded by Lata Mangeshkar but at the last moment, she suggested to Mohammed Shafi to take a new singer for this song. If it is true, it is somewhat intriguing as to why Lata Mangeshkar decided not to sing this song. It is also not clear whether this song was retained in the film when O P Nayyar took over as music director. We are lucky that at least the audio clip is available for all of us to enjoy this beautiful lori.

I have some difficulties in getting the correct words ofthe song in at 3-4 places and I hope that Atul will be able to decipher them.

The movie , alongwith its songs may have been forgotten with time, but what fantastic songs this movie had !

Here is a song that I discovered a few hours ago. This song is a Rafi Asha Bhonsle duet. This playful teasing song between lovers is written by Aziz Kashmiri. Vinod, one of my favourite music directors composed the music. But I find that earthmusic mentions the name of the music director for this song as Gulshan Soofi. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more ligh on the music director of this song. For the time being, I will assume that Vinod is the music director of this song.

This Rafi-Asha Bhonsle duet is no ordinary duet for this blog. It is the 200th Rafi- Asha Bhonsle duet for this blog. I have no idea how many duet the two of them sand together, but I am sure that we have covered a good number of all their duets in this blog by now.

Here is a song on the occasion of 63rd Indian Republic Day on behalf of all NRIs. Even though we live outside “Bharat”, our heart and soul always remains in India.

As a family, we have taken two tours of North India during our last two visits. The first visit was Delhi, Agra, Haridwar & Rishikesh. While performing aarti at Har Ki Pedhi, couldn’t stop tears running through my eyes. Such a joy to see vast Ganga with tremendous force of unconditional love.

Our second visit was doing Char Dham Yatra. We saw all “different forms of Ganga” flowing through different regions and hence recognized with different names. My kids were so thrilled specially looking at a glacier on one of the peak of Himalaya ranges behind Kedarnath Temple. That environment is so serene & pious, you just don’t want to leave that area. How blessed we Indian are that Lord is bestowing his love in the form of Ganga!

Greetings to all Atulites on the celebration today, of the 63rd Republic Day of the Indian Union.

There is an interesting history and facts behind this date. After the massacre at the Jalianwala Bagh in 1919, the call for complete independence from the British rule strengthened, especially led by the veteran leaders such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Aurobindo Ghosh and Bipin Chandra Pal, who advocated explicit Indian independence from the Empire. On 26th Jan, 1930, the Indian National Congress adopted the Purna Swaraj declaration, i.e. complete independence for India.

Although India achieved independence on 15th Aug, 1947, it was still a nation with a Dominion status under the British Empire and King George VI was the head of the state. The country was still ruled as per the laws promulgated under the colonial Government of India Act 1935. The head of the government was still a Governor General (Lord Mountbatten), appointed by the British king. In 1948, C Rajagopalachari took over as the Governor General, and remained in that position till the first elected President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad took over as the President under the new constitution in 1950.

On 28th Aug, 1947, the Drafting Committee was set up under the leadership of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, to draft a permanent constitution for the country. The first draft of the constitution was submitted to the Constituent Assembly on 4th Nov, 1947. The 308 members of the assembly met in open public sessions for 166 days spread over more than two years, to debate and discuss the provisions of the constitution. The constitution was finally adopted by the assembly on 26th Nov, 1949. On 21st Jan, 1950, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the first President of the country, and took over the position as the head of the nation. The constitution that had already been approved and signed by the members of the Constituent Assembly, was officially adopted as the constitution for the nation, on 26th Jan, 1950, to honor the date of the Purna Swaraj declaration in 1930.

Republic Day celebration has been a part of the script in many Hindi films. This song celebrating the occasion, is from the 1968 film ‘Duniya’. The lyrics are by Neeraj, and the music composition is by Shankar Jaikishan. The singing voice is that of Asha Bhosle. On screen, this is presented as a stage performance by Vijayantimala and a group of dancers.

‘Duniya’ is social-romantic-murder mystery drama, produced under the banner of Times Films, Bombay, and is directed by T Prakash Rao. The star cast of the film includes Dev Anand, Vijayntimala, Balraj Sahni, Sulochana, Achla Sachdev, Suresh, Johnny Walker, Prem Chopra, Nana Palsikar, Lalita Pawar, Sapru, Madan Puri, Lakshmi Chhaayaa, Rashid Khan, Jagdish Raj, Jankidas, Mridula Rani, Prabhu Dayal, Lata Bose, Praveen Paul, Brahm Bhardwaj, Radhyeshyam, Aziz Kashmiri, etc. with uncredited appearances by Tuntun and Birbal. A very young Sachin plays the role of the child Amar (Dev Anand). The film has 6 songs, which are shared amongst three poets – Hasrat Jaipuri, Neeraj and SH Behari. Four of these songs are already posted on this blog.

The film is a mix of lost and found siblings / parents / children, with a murder mystery thrown in for good measure. Three kids in a village, Amar, Gopal and his sister Mala, start off as childhood friends, but soon the destiny takes them to separate paths. Then they grow up and meet once again, in the beginning unknown to each other. Amar (Dev Anand) and his mother Janki (Sulochana) are separate from Amar’s real father Ramnath (Balraj Sahni) who, after a period of time is remarried to Shobha (Achala Sachdev). Mala (grown up role played by Vijayantimala) is adopted by Shobha and Ramnath; Shobha is a cousin to Mala’s widowed mother Sharda (Mridula Rani). Gopal (grown up role played by Suresh) is notorious for petty theft in the village, and soon runs away from home. Mala’s mother passes away, Amar move to the city, where he studies to become a lawyer. His real father, Ramnath, is also a lawyer, at the post of a Public Prosecutor in the same city. Mala and Amar cross each other’s paths, and drawn to each other. A chance meeting once again back in the village reveals their true identities to each other, and they are now set on the path of love together.

James Bond of India 009 (Johnny Walker) is a private detective, and a close friend of Amar. Mala and Amar approach him to locate Gopal. In the meanwhile, another conspiracy is brewing in which Madan Puri and Jagdish Raj present Mohan (Prem Chopra) as the long lost son to Ramnath. He accepts the identity and announces the engagement of Mohan with Mala. It turns out that Mohan is also involved with the daughter (Lata Bose) of Girdharilal (Nana Palsikar), whom he spurns to take on the role of the long lost son. While the story is moving across so many threads, one night Mohan is murdered. The suspicion is first on Ram Singh, Mohan’s driver, who really is Gopal, working under an assumed name because the police is after him. With his identity revealed, Amar steps in to defend him. The suspicion then moves to Amar, because of his friendship with Mala, and then to Ramnath himself, in that he had discovered that Mohan was a fraud. The tale weaves through courtroom scenes and detective work, to finally locate the real murderer who turns out to be Nana Palsikar. With all hindrances out of the way now, there is a happy reunion of all the family, and happily ever after etc. etc.

Overall, the film is an entertaining fare, with a number of catchy songs including the hit duet “Dooriyaan Nazdeekiyaan Ban Gayeen, Ajab Ittefaaq Hai” .

This is a lively song with a topical message of national integration. The words and verses, written more than four decades ago, are sadly still so true. The time has continued to pass, but the calamities and the animosities continue to be the same. But also same is the line ‘na teri hai na meri hai, beti kisi kisaan ki’, which still touches a deep seated emotion inside. Enjoy and share the message.

Here is a song of this genre from “Aakraman” (1975). This song is sung by Kishore Kumar and it is picturised on Rajesh Khanna, who plays a handicapped person who has lost one leg and is forced to walk with the help of crutches. For this blog, it is the fourth republic day. During these three past Republic day occasions as well on the three occasions of Independence day of India, this blog has covered most well known patriotic songs from Hindi movies.

In fact, some well known non film patriotic songs have also been covered in the past.

During 1960s, when India faced aggression from her neighbours, many movie personalities went to the front to encourage the Army men, and they also organised programmes to raise money for the war efforts.

A few memorable non filmy songs were created at that time which went on to become iconic songs. I have already discussed the most well known of these partioti song, namely Ae mere watan ke logon zaraa aankh mein bhar lo paani .

Here is another well known non filmy patriotic song from that era. This song is sung by Rafi and chorus. This song is written by Jaan Nisaar Akhtar and music is composed by Khayyam.

‘Khaakaan’ from 1965 is a film I have never heard about before. Given the star cast, with Dara Singh in the lead, it definitely must have been a B grade costume action drama, that probably would have made the rounds of the B cinema circuit, and then went away. This is a song that I have heard on the radio many many years ago, and its melody and memories have remained with me all these years, without really knowing anything about its antecedents. Recently, I discovered this song on YouTube once again, and then found out more about the film and the song itself.

A lovely song rendered in her most spirited manner by Asha ji, supported by a chorus of voices. Another expression of a young heart in love – the song describes the emotions and longings that traverse the sleepless nights, along with the one in love. The words are very simply expressed – yet their overall impact along with the music and the singing voice is just superb.

‘Khaakaan’ is a production from Henna Deluxe, Bombay and is directed by Aspi Irani. The songs for this film are written by Anand Bakshi and the music is composed by N Dutta. The actor credits include Prithviraj Kapoor, Dara Singh, Mumtaz, Bhagwan, Rajan, Uma Dutt, Kammo, Ratnamala, Gul Hameed, Shri Bhagwan, Aruna, Jeevanjkala, Laxmi Chhaya, Polson, Joginder Singh, Saudagar Singh, Karnal Singh, Goldstein, Bruno Arlington etc. It appears that the film must have some good wrestling bouts, given that Dara Singh is in the lead, and the last five names in the list of actors read very much like professional wrestlers. But that aside. . .

Enjoy this oh so very hummable song. And my respect for N Dutta as a music director is growing, as I am making more and more connections between the songs and details of their creators.
