VINTAGE NAUSHAD….Song No. 9
——————————————–

Here is wishing all readers, visitors and contributors to this Blog a ” VERY HAPPY REPUBLIC DAY 2015 ” !

Today’s song is a Patriotic song from the film “Pahle aap-1944 “. This is that song, which Mohd.Rafi sang for first time for Naushad. The song is a chorus of singers like Shyamkumar, Allauddin Naved, B. M. Vyas and Mohd. Rafi. Hindi Film Geet Kosh says it is a ‘ chorus song ‘( samooh geet ) and Rafi Excel sheet says the singer is Mohd. Rafi.

However, the noted Biographer and author Shri. Vishwas Nerurkar mentions in his book-Filmography and list of songs of Naushad, that Naushad told him that this song was sung by Shyam Kumar, Allauddin Naved, B.M.Vyas and Mohd.Rafi. So it is confirmed from reliable sources.

In one interview, Naushad had said,” when this song was to be recorded,we wanted a marching effect, since the song was to shot as a marching song in the film.To get that effect,we asked all singers of the chorus to wear Military heavy shoes and then sing the song, making a rhythmic sound by hitting the booted legs in unison. After the song was recorded, Rafi’s face was glowing with the joy of singing his First song in a Hindi film ! his feet were bleeding, due to heavy Military boots, but he did not care ” So,besides being a patriotic song,it is also a Historic song, being Rafi’s first Hindi Filmi song.

The relations of Mohd. Rafi and Naushad were on a different plane. Rafi never considered Naushad as a mere composer. For him Naushad was his Guru, mentor, Guide and a well wisher. Rafi had tremendous respect for naushad. he never used to sit in the presence of Naushad, until he was forced by Naushad to sit. On his part, Naushad too never treated Rafi as only a singer. For him, Rafi was God’s gift to Indian film music. Rafi represented all that was good in a Gentleman and for him Rafi was like his own son.

While paying a tribute to Rafi,Naushad had said,

” meri sargam mein tera jikr hai
Mere geeton mein teri awaaz hai. “

Rafi first sang a song in Punjabi film of Shyamsunder-Gul baloch. In 1943,Rafi came to Bombay, with a recommendation letter from Naushad’s father. Honouring his father’s letter, Naushad gave him opportunity to sing in Pahle aap-44. After this Naushad not only used Rafi but also recommended him to others. Naushad says,

” The story of God-gift Rafi is incomplete without talking about Hamidbhai-whose contribution in Rafi’s success is immense. Many people thought then and even now that Hamid was his elder brother, but he was no way related to Rafi. Hamid was a friend of Rafi’s elder brother. He realised the talent in Rafi and vowed to make him the biggest singer of films. For this Hamid sacrificed his own personal life too. He brought Rafi to Bombay and started visiting all the studios requesting for a chance to Rafi.

” They stayed in Bhendi Bazar. Rafi fell in love with a girl there. Her family had no objection, but only after the girl’s elder sister got married first. To solve this problem,Hamidbhai himself married the elder sister and made Rafi’s marriage possible ! Over a period,Rafi became a famous and much in demand singer. That time Hamidbhai coolly handed over the charge to Zaheer ( Rafi’s brother-in-law) and retired. Rafi always respected him. Rafi was kept away from alcohol, smoking etc because of Hamidbhai who himself was a vegetarian. Rafi looked after his family well. When his wife got T.B., she was kept in a sanitorium in Devlali, near Nashik. His sons got best education and daughter was married off nicely. hamidbhai was given distributorship and a office in Hyderabad. Later, Hamidbhai retired and went to Canada to stay with his sons.

” In early days of Rafi, once there was a recording of Sikandar, by Meer Saheb. Rafi requested for a recommendation letter for singing in chorus. I gave him the letter, but he stood there only. I asked hi what the matter was. He shyly said that he had no money for the Bus fare to go there. I gave him One Rupee. Rafi never forgot the value of this One Rupee. He earned money in millions, but the value of that one rupee was always remembered by him. He respected me very much. he even talked in whispers-always spoke in Gaandhaar. His Pancham was only for the singing. Respect for elders is now out of date, out of fashion thing, but for him it was very important.

” One day he brought his First car to show me. it was a second hand car for Rs. 2000/-. later on he bought an imported brand new car,but in both cars, first ride was mine. When his daughter’s marriage was fixed,he came with the invitation card. All details were there in it. Also daughter’s Bidai was mentioned from the Hotel. I told him, ‘ Bidai should be from only Home. The girls have attachment to relatives and the home where they grew. Hotel is not correct.’ Rafi started crying,said-‘ You are right Naushad saab. No one guided me. Bidai will be from home only.’

” Rafi was very generous and God fearing. he went to Haj 3 times. He helped many financially to make Haj yatra. he donated 300 carpets because he saw people offering Namaz in Bandra maidan on ground. He used to sing free for composers who were new and those who could not afford his price.

” When he died millions of people came to say Good Bye to him. I said,
‘ Koi kehta hai dil gaya, dilwar gaya
Saahil pukarta hai,samunder chala gaya
Duniya se Mausiqi ka Paighambar chala gaya ‘ ”
(adapted from an article in S.Kanekar’s book ‘Gaaye chala jaa, with thanks).

On this auspicious occasion of the REPUBLIC DAY, let us enjoy the patriotic song from film, Pahle Aap-1944.

We are eleven days into the new year. The euphoria and enthusiasm that one felt on the first day of the year have died down and most of the new year resolotions have been duly forgotten by most people by now. :)
