Ganga aaye kahaan se Ganga jaaye kahaan re

on:“Kabuliwala”, a movie based on Rabindranath Tagore’s moving story of the same name, was significant in many respects. The fact that Bollywood adopted stories of great writers was praiseworthy. The other fact that the story faithfully followed the story was also nice.
In fact, it was a movie that perhaps did the most to popularise this story.
This movie is now known for its music. The music of Salil Chowdury is still remembered today. It had two singers singing two of their best songs. One was Manna Dey singing “Ae mere pyare watan tujhpe dil kurbaan”. Another immortal song from this movie was sung by Hemant Kumar. It was ” Ganga aaye kahaan se, Ganga jaaye kahan re.”
This song is picturised on W M Khan, who has the distinction of being the first playback singer in Hindi movies when he sang “De de khuda ke naam par..”in “Alam Ara” (1931)M V Rajan. I thank Pawan Jha for pointing out the error and in helping to identify the actor.
The lyrics is written by Gulzar. And what beautiful philosophical lyrics he came up with ! Very simple, elegant lyrics that at the same time, carried some very thoughtful observations as well.
In brief, this song is a masterpiece.
Song- Ganga aaye kahan se ( Kabuliwala) (1961) Singer-Hemant Kumar, Lyrics- Gulzar , MD- Salil Choudhari

Gangaa aaye kahaan se, Gangaa jaaye kahaan re
aaye kahaan se, jaaye kahaan re
laharaaye paani mein jaise dhuup-chhaanv re
Gangaa aaye kahaan se, Gangaa jaaye kahaan re
laharaaye paani mein jaise dhuup-chhaanv re
Gangaa aaye kahaan se, Gangaa jaaye kahaan re
laharaaye paani mein jaise dhuup-chhaanv re
raat kaari din ujiyaaraa mil gaye donon saaye
raat kaari din ujiyaaraa mil gaye donon saaye
saanjh ne dekho rang roop ke kaise bhed mitaaye re
laharaaye paani mein jaise dhuup-chhaanv re
Gangaa aaye kahaan se, Gangaa jaaye kahaan re
laharaaye paani mein jaise dhuup-chhaanv re
kaanch koyi maatii koyi rang-birange pyaale
he he he he he he
kaanch koyi maatii koyi rang-birange pyaale
pyaas lage to ek baraabar jis mein paani daale re
laharaaye paani mein jaise dhuup-chhaanv re
Gangaa aaye kahaan se, Gangaa jaaye kahaan re
laharaaye paani mein jaise dhuup-chhaanv re
naam koyi boli koyi laakhon roop aur chehre
ho ho ho ho ho ho
naam koyi boli koyi laakhon roop aur chehre
khol ke dekho pyar ki aankhen sab tere sab mere
laharaaye paani mein jaise dhuup-chhaanv re
Gangaa aaye kahaan se, Gangaa jaaye kahaan re
laharaaye paani mein jaise dhuup-chhaanv re
Gangaa aaye kahaan se, Gangaa jaaye kahaan re

The tune of this song is based on an East Bengal’s (now Bangladesh) bhatyali (boatman) folk song. The Bengali song was written by Jassimuddin and have been sung by many Bengali singers including
