This movie “Manzil” was one of the unsuccessful movies of Amitabh Bachchan, but this one song from this movie, viz “Rimjhim gire saawan” has become the stuff of legends already. It is one of the first songs that comes to mind when one thinks of rain songs.
In the movie, this song appears twice. Once in the voice of Lata and the second time in the voice of Kishore. Based on one’s subjective judgement, one may like one version better than the other or may decide to like them both equally. When it comes to audio, Kishore Version is more popular. But when it comes to picturisation, there is little doubt that the Lata version takes the cake.
Lata’s version of the song has Amitabh and Mausami Chatterji enjoying Bombay rain like commoners. The shooting has taken place on real locations, viz bus stands,on public roads, on the sea beach and other landmarks of Bombay. And it is informative to observe that heavy rain in Bombay those days only led to drenching of clothes, and the city did not come under water unlike what happens now a days after one heavy shower.
Many people like this song because of the music , lyrics and the vocals. I like them too, but in addition,I also like this song for its picturisation. This song tells us about the Bombay ( as Mumbai was then called) of yesteryears when things were much different and more innocent than they are today.
It is an absolutely lovely song. I am sure readers of this blog would love it.
PS-Initial writeup only included the lyrics of Lata version of the song. Now lyrics of Kishore Kumar version, as well as the translations of the two versions have been added- all thanks to Sudhir jee.

Rimjhim gire saawan
sulag sulag jaaye man
bheege aaj is mausam me
lagi kaisi ye agan
Rimjhim gire saawan
sulag sulag jaaye man
bheege aaj is mausam me
lagi kaisi ye agan
lalalalalalala
pahle bhi yoon to
barse the baadal
pahle bhi yoon to
bheega tha aanchal
lalalalalalalalalala
pahle bhi yoon to
barse the baadal
pahle bhi yoon to
bheega tha aanchal
abke baras kyun sajan
sulag sulag jaaye man
bheege aaj is mausam me
lagi kaisi ye agan
lalalalalalala
Is baar saawan
dahka hua hai
is baar mausam
bahka hua hai
lalalalalalalala
Is baar saawan
dahka hua hai
is baar mausam
bahka hua hai
jaane peeke chali kya pawan
sulag sulag jaaye man
bheege aj is mausam me
lagi kaisi ye agan
rimjhim gire sawan
sulag sulag jaaye man
bheege aaj is mausam me
rimjhim gire sawan
lalalala
rimjhim gire sawan

kaise dekhe sapne nayan
sulag sulag jaaye mann
bheege aaj is mausam mein
lagi kaisi ye agan
rim jhim girey saawan
mehfil mein kaise
keh den kisi se
dil bandh rahaa hai
kis ajnabee se
mehfil mein kaise
keh den kisi se
dil bandh rahaa hai
kis ajnabee se
haaye karen ab kyaa jatan
sulag sulag jaaye mann
bheege aaj is mausam mein

rimjhim gire saawan, sulag sulag jaaye man
bheege aaj is mausam me, lagi kaisi ye agan
Spattering rain falling in monsoons
Sets the embers ablaze in the heart
In the wetness of the drizzling rains today
What is this burning flame (inside)
pahle bhi yoon to barse thhe baadal
pahle bhi yoon to bheega tha aanchal
abke baras kyun sajan, sulag sulag jaaye man
bheege aaj is mausam me, lagi kaisi ye agan
The clouds have rained, even before in the past
And have made wet my attire, even then
But the rain of this season
Sets the embers ablaze in the heart
In the wetness of the drizzling rains today
What is this burning flame (inside)
is baar saawan dahka hua hai
is baar mausam bahka hua hai
jaane pee ke chali kya pawan, sulag sulag jaaye man
bheege aj is mausam me, lagi kaisi ye agan
The monsoon rains are sizzling hot this year
And the season is so un-sober
The winds are drunk with, I know not what
Setting the embers ablaze in the heart
In the wetness of the drizzling rains today
What is this burning flame (inside)

Raindrops falling, sound like the tinkle of anklets
And longings in my heart will not go to sleep
How will eyes see the dreams (of you)
When the embers are ablaze in the heart
In the wetness of the drizzling rains today
What is this burning flame (inside)
mehfil mein kaise keh den kisi se
dil bandh rahaa hai kisi ajnabee se

It’s not easy to share (even) amongst friends
That the heart is getting bonded with a total stranger
I know not what efforts would help
For the embers are ablaze in the heart
In the wetness of the drizzling rains today
What is this burning flame (inside)

The amazing thing about this song is that unlike the usual double songs in which the same lyrics are sung twice over, the lyrics for the two versions of Rim Jhim are different. No doubt the Kishore version has more expression and soul but the variations which Lata brings to her version have a beauty all of its own. Kishore’s is almost instantly and instinctively lovable, Lata’s version is in my view an acquired taste.

I love both versions. Lata`s version is breezy like the winds buffeting marine drive in the film. While Kishore`s version is soulful and excellently sung. Pancham has given very good music especially in the Lata version.

Love this song. The picturisation is also so natural (except for Amitabh’s suit :)). Reminds one of the good old days of Bombay where we used to love the rains. The gum boots, making paper boats, water balloons, boy those sure were the days.

Hey Atul, could you please add ”Tum ho mere dil ke dhadkan” to the list of songs from the film Manzil?

Superb songs, beautifully picturized thanks for the translation of both. I feel Lata version is little better than Kishore.
