Daaru ki bottle mein saahab paani bharta hai

Posted on: November 14, 2008

Laxmikant Pyarelal had dabbled into Goan folk music while composing music for “Bobby”. That “Bobby” song was “Na maangoon sona chaandi, na maangoon heera moti”. They used the same tune in another song of that era, viz “Daaru ki bottle mein saahab paani bharta hai” from an Amitabh Bachchan movie called Majboor.

This song was quite an amusing song and I could not have enough of this song, but unfortunately I got to listen to this song very few times on Radio and loudspeakers. For some inexplicable reasons, this song failed to catch the imagination of the public.

This song is very difficult to locate. But I think that this is one song ( out of many) that deserves to be revived.

As I mentioned, this song is based on Goan folk music. There are a few lines in this song in Goan language ( Konkani ?) and my Konkani is as outstanding as B S Chandrashekhar’s batting skills, so these non Hindi portion of the lyrics that I have posted is what I could make out, and they may not be correct. Any errors, if pointed out in the lyrics will be gratefully acknowledged and corrected. And I have been unable to follow the words that the chorus sings in between Kishore’s singing. If anyone can tell me the exact words sung by the chorus, I will add them to the lyrics.

Listening to this song again, I just get amazed at the quality outturn of Kishore Kumar those days. Whatever he sang those days was of such high standards. Too bad that the public, given the limitations of the era ( music available on unaffordable format viz records), forgot many outstanding songs of that era.

PS-Now I have been able to locate the video of this song. And I am so pleased to be able to watch the picturisation. This song is picturised as a bar song, with Pran lip syncing in Kishore Kumar’s voice. The picturisation also shows many other actors singing and dancing, Jayshree T being the most prominent of them.

Song-Daaru ki bottle mein saahab paani bharta hai (Majboor)(1974) Singer- Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD- Laxmikant Pyarelal

Tum konn re baba,

dekh le jis din Michael ko
raat ko seth nahin sotaa
khud chori kartaa hai
lekin chor se dartaa hai
phir naa kahnaa Michael daaru peeke dangaa kartaa hai

Farar far zatai ranatu
Farar far zatai ranatu
Farar far zatai ranatu
Farar far zatai ranatu

jungle mein hain mor bade
shahar mein hain chor bade
jungle mein hain mor bade
shahar mein hain chor bade
apne bhi ustaad yahaan
pade huye hain aur bade
Michael to bas logon ki
khaali jeb katartaa hai
phir naa kahnaa Michael daaru peeke dangaa kartaa hai
he Hanv Goemcho Saiba, la la la, la la

saal-maheene ke liye
khaane-peene ke liye
arre saal-maheene ke liye
khaane-peene ke liye
kitnaa paisaa chaahiye
aakhir jeene ke liye
log deewaana hain jo yoon
iss paise pe martaa hai
phir naa kahnaa Michael daaru peeke dangaa kartaa hai
Hey Hanv Goemcho Saiba, la la la, la la

Ohhh, I completely forgot about this one. I used to looooove this song.

Brings back so many memories.

I used to keep singing “jungle mein hain mor badey, sheher mein hain chor badey” and “saal maheeney ke liye, khaane peeney ke liye, kitna paisa chaahiye aakhir jeeney ke liye” …

Thanks a ton, Atul.

I completely forgot about this one otherwise it would definitely have been in my first farmaish list. 🙂

Hi! My dad has been looking for this song for a very long time now, and asked me to see if I can find it.
I hit potluck with Google, and now my dad is literally over the moon!! (called me a magician, even, for simply running a search!! :D)

Anyway, I was wondering if you would know where I can download this song? You are right, this song is nearly impossible to find anywhere!!
I look forward to your reply 🙂

Thank you very much for these lyrics.

I had been searching for the specific Goan (?) lyrics in the interludes for over a couple of decades (needless to say, I did not google for it).

BTW, the above is actually:

la mi mi mi mi
fa mi re re mi fa mi
la mi mi mi mi
re Do si re Do si la

These are the (Western) classical notes of music with the following correspondence:

do re mi fa so la Ti
sa re ga ma pa dha ni

Don’t know why it is followed by laughter (maybe because the gaaNv kee chhokriyaaN don’t get western music or because of Michael’s actions?). BTW, there are sounds of laughter that follow western music notes in a song in the 1990s as well (I forget it right now) 😦
