Itna na mujhse tu pyaar badha

Posted on: November 20, 2008

Here is a duet sung by Talat Mahmood and Lata. The typical quivering voice of Talat Mahmood on Sunil Dutt may sound a bit odd now, but this did not stop this song from becoming very popular. Lata sings for Asha Parekh, then a newcomer. This song is composed by Salil Chowdhary, and the lyricist Rajinder Krishan came up with very nice and hummable lyrics.

I have no idea when I listened to this song for the first time, but I loved this song right from the very first time that I listened to this song. I liked it, despite this being a “bhoola bisra” song even in 1970s. It is a “bhoola bisra” song even today, but people who like good old songs would definitely love listening to this song.

Now I have come to know that this song also has a solo version sung by Talat Mehmood. The lyrics of this version, as well as the translations of both versions have now been included. I thanks Sudhir jee for the lyrics and the translations.

itnaa na mujhse tu pyaar badhaa
ke main ek baadal aawaaraa
kaise kisi kaa sahaaraa banoon
ke main khud beghar bechaaraa

is liye tujhse main pyaar karoon
ke tu ek baadal aawaaraa
janam janam se hoon saath tere
hai naam meraa jal ki dhaaraa
itnaa na mujhse tu pyaar badhaa
ke main ek baadal aawaaraa
janam janam se hoon saath tere
hai naam meraa jal ki dhaaraa

mujhe ek jagah aaraam nahin
ruk jaanaa meraa kaam nahin
mujhe ek jagah aaraam nahin
ruk jaanaa meraa kaam nahin
meraa saath kahaan tak dogi tum
mai desh videsh kaa banjaaraa
itnaa na mujhse tu pyaar badhaa
ke main ek baadal aawaaraa
kaise kisi kaa sahaaraa banoon
ke main khud beghar bechaaraa
is liye tujhse main pyaar karoon
ke tu ek baadal aawaaraa
janam janam se hoon saath tere
hai naam meraa jal ki dhaaraa

o neel gagan ke deewaane
tu pyaar na meraa pahchaane
o neel gagan ke deewaane
tu pyaar na meraa pahchaane
main tab tak saath chaloon tere
jab tak na kahe tu main haaraa
is liye tujhse main pyaar karoon
ke tu ek baadal aawaaraa
janam janam se hoon saath tere
hai naam meraa jal ki dhaaraa
itna na mujhse tu pyaar badhaa
ke main ek baadal aawaaraa
kaise kisi ka sahaaraa banoon
ke main khud beghar bechaaraa

kyun pyaar mein tu naadaan bane
ik paagal ka armaan bane
kyun pyaar mein tu naadaan bane
ik paagal kaa armaan bane
ab laut ke jaana mushkil hai
maine chhod diya hai jag saara
itnaa na mujhse tu pyaar badhaa
ke main ek baadal aawaaraa
janam janam se hoon saath tere
hai naam meraa jal ki dhaaraa

itnaa na mujh se tu pyaar badhaa
ke mein ek baadal awaaraa
kaise kisi ka sahaaraa banoon
ke mein khud beghar bechaaraa
itnaa na mujh se tu pyaar badhaa
ke mein ek baadal awaaraa
kaise kisi ka sahaaraa banoon
ke mein khud beghar bechaaraa

armaan thhaa gulshan par barsoon
ik shokh ke daaman par barsoon
armaan thhaa gulshan par barsoon
ik shokh ke daaman par barsoon
afsos jali mitti pe mujhe
taqdeer ne meri de maaraa
itnaa na mujh se tu pyaar badhaa
ke main ek baadal awaaraa
kaise kisi ka sahaaraa banoon
ke main khud beghar bechaaraa

madhosh hameshaa rehtaa hoon
khaamosh hoon kab kuchh kehtaa hoon
madhosh hameshaa rehtaa hoon
khaamosh hoon kab kuchh kehtaa hoon
koi kyaa jaane mere seene mein
hai bijli kaa bhi angaaraa
itnaa na mujh se tu pyaar badhaa
ke mein ek baadal aawaaraa
kaise kisi ka sahaaraa banoon
ke mein khud beghar bechaaraa
itnaa na mujh se tu pyaar badhaa
ke mein ek baadal aawaaraa
kaise kisi ka sahaaraa banoon
ke mein khud beghar bechaaraa

itnaa na mujhse tu pyaar badhaa, ke main ek baadal aawaaraa
kaise kisi kaa sahaaraa banoon, ke main khud beghar bechaaraa

Love me not, not so much
For I am but a wandering cloud
How could I be a relief and sustenance to another
For I am a homeless destitute my self

is liye tujhse main pyaar karoon, ke tu ek baadal aawaaraa
janam janam se hoon saath tere, hai naam meraa jal ki dhaaraa

That you are a cloud that wanders in the blue skies
Is the reason that I love you so
For ages, in every lifetime, I am your companion
For I am the flow of precipitation that is ever suffused within you

mujhe ek jagah aaraam nahin, ruk jaanaa meraa kaam nahin
meraa saath kahaan tak dogi tum, mai desh videsh kaa banjaaraa

My wanderings make me pause not anywhere
That I may stop and rest is not my disposition
Till where-all you could accompany me
For I am a drifter, drifting from land to land

o neel gagan ke deewaane, tu pyaar na meraa pahchaane
main tab tak saath chaloon tere, jab tak na kahe tu main haaraa

O the lover of blue skies
You don’t know, nor do you appreciate my love for you
My promise, I will be with you
Till you will relent and consent

kyun pyaar mein tu naadaan baney, ik paagal kaa armaan bane
ab laut ke jaana mushkil hai, maine chhod diya hai jag saara

Pray don’t be imprudent, in love
Pray don’t settle deeper into my mind’s desires
But know, o dear, it is not easy to retrace my steps
For I have already forsaken everything (to be with you)

I desired sprinkle down on a garden of flowers
Or maybe shower my love on the raiment of a dainty damsel
But my destiny provided otherwise
And made me rain on the burning sands of a desert

madhosh hameshaa rehtaa hoon, khaamosh hoon kab kuchh kehtaa hoon
koi kyaa jaane mere seene mein, hai bijli kaa bhi angaaraa

Imbued in mindless numbness always
I simply suffer silently, ne’er say a word
None may know this, but in my heart
Are the burning embers of lightning

Lovely song.
Lifted from (or should that be “inspired by”) Mozart’s 40th symphony but it is very well adapted by Salil da who was known for his western style music.

Wow, I love this number. I remember a friend of mine in college gave me a cassette with lots of old hindi numbers, and this song was one of them. It was the first time I heard it and loved it. Now that it is mentioned, I can see the inspiration from Mozart :).

I can listen to this song endlessly! And what we have in today’s songs feels like when will it finally end!

You will also find variations of this musical score in a Bengali song that Salil also provided the music for- the song sung by Sandhya Mukherjee is “Jodi Naam Dhore Taare Dake”

Talat had already lent his voice to Sunil Dutt earlier in Usne Kaha Tha for the famous duet with Lata-Aha Rimjhim Ke Ye Pyare Pyare Geet Liye under Salil Chowdhury only and the voice perfectly suited Sunil Dutt in this song.Chhaya song came afterwords. Both these songs were great hits even before release of respective films(Usne kaha tha in1960 and Chhaya in1961),I remember vividly.
