Tujhe kya sunaun main dilruba

Posted on: November 26, 2008

This is an immortal song from “Aakhri Daao”, a movie that was produced 50 years ago. This song is sung by Rafi and most people know this song thanks to the divine voice of Rafi.

In fact, that is how most people knew about most songs, viz by the name of the singer. More inquisitive fans would have additional knowledge about the lyricist and the music director as well. In this case, they are Majrooh Sultanpuri and Madan Mohan respectively.

When it comes to picturisation, it is picturised on Shekhar ( a leading actor of those days) and Nutan ( an up and coming actress). The picturisation is quite beautiful. The two are colege students ( it appears) and have gone on a picnic. The hero sings this song on the request of others in the evering, with a campfire visible in the background.

As the song begins, no one is left in any doubt that the singer is singing about Nutan, to her visible embarrasment . Her friends enjoy her embarrasment for the first paragraph of the song.

As the second para begins, others discreetly slip away, leaving the duo alone. By this time Nutan forgets her embarrassment and becomes involved in the song. She spends the rest of the time looking into the eyes of the hero, transfixed and unblinking, oblivious to the world around her.

The song is beautifully picturised, as far as I am concerned. That way, the picturisation does full justice to the song. And this song has, very deservingly, become one of the immortal songs of its genre.

Song-Tujhe kya sunaaun main dilruba (Aakhri Daao) (1958) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

tujhe kyaa sunaaun main dilrubaa
tere saamne meraa haal hai
teri ik nigaah ki baat hai
meri zindagi kaa sawaal hai
tujhe kyaa sunaaun main dilrubaa

meri har khushi tere dam se hai
meri zindagi tere gham se hai
meri har khushi tere dam se hai
meri zindagi tere gham se hai
tere dard se rahe bekhabar
mere dil ki kab ye mazaal hai
teri ik nigaah ki baat hai
meri zindagi kaa sawaal hai
tujhe kyaa sunaaun main dilrubaa

tere husn par hai meri nazar
mujhe subah shaam ki kyaa khabar
tere husn par hai meri nazar
mujhe subah shaam ki kyaa khabar
meri shaam hai teri justaju
meri subah teraa khayaal hai
tujhe kyaa sunaaun main dilrubaa

mere dil jigar mein samaa bhi jaa
mere dil jigar mein samaa bhi jaa
rahe kyon nazar kaa bhi faaslaa
mere dil jigar mein samaa bhi jaa
rahe kyon nazar kaa bhi faaslaa
ke tere baghair o jaan-e-jaan
mujhe zindagi bhi muhaal hai
tujhe kyaa sunaaun main dilrubaa
tere saamne meraa haal hai
teri ik nigaah ki baat hai
meri zindagi kaa sawaal hai
tujhe kyaa sunaaun main dilrubaa

This no doubt is a lovely song. While I greatly admire Madan Mohan and love his music, what bothers me about this particular song is that the melody was copied directly from Sajjad Hussain’s Yeh Hawa Yeh Rat Yeh Chandni from Sangdil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJ57v3fzBQ8). The story is that Sajjad expressed his displeasure to Madan Mohan, who then did not engage in such copying. I still cannot understand why someone of Madan Mohan’s caliber would copy another composer’s composition. I must say that this episode does not diminish my respect for his other songs.

Thanks for sharing this information, MMfan. Considering the songs Madan Mohan has given us, I do not think copying one tune or two in his earlier years detracts from his overall contribution to Bollywood music.

Many years back, I heard the same song “Tujhe kya sunao main dilruja”, in identical tune, in Talat Mehmood’s voice – on Vividh Bharti. Do you have any reference on the same? Or was it possibly, sung by him as a ‘poetic justice’ for copying Sajjad’s original tune?

Translation :

O darling, do i have to say it all ?
Here I am, disheveled in front of you
Throw a glance at me, i lie in wait
dont you know ? my life depends on it

every happiness is because of you
your sorrow is worth my whole life
not aware of your pain, no way
i cannot afford to be so, heartless

my vision is full of your loveliness
sunrise or sunset, what do I care ?
evening is spent searching for you
day begins engulfed in thoughts of you.

come, take over my heart and the spirit
division of vision ? not required here
o my life’s substance, without your presence
it is difficult to live, to breath even

MMfan ji was right in saying that the song was copied from from ” Yeh hawa yeh raat yeh chandani ” from Sangdil MD Sajjad Husein of 1952 a gap of about six years .
The moment Sajjd heard the song of Madan Mohan , he got furious and tried to meet Madanji . Incidently both were face to face at one occasion He shouted “How dare you copy my tune” Madanji was ready with the answer and said “Sajjadji I could not find a better tune than yours “and
Sajjadji had calm down and both were laughing by shaking hands.

Actress shammi is also seen in the video .Got to know about Madan Mohanji and Saddam Hussan episode . Specially comments made by Fatehali Damani . What I knew about Saddam Hussain was that he was very short tempered .This is a unique platform , where we , the old song lovers could interact and share their views .

There’s a big story behind this song’s tune…it is directly lifted from Yeh hawa yeh raat by Sajjad and Talat. Madan Mohan acknowledged it and said that he loved the tune so much, he HAD to plagiarise it…
