Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Tum bin jaaun kahaan

Posted on: December 31, 2008

This outstanding song “tum bin jaaun kahan” appears twice in the movie. This song was sung by Rafi for Shashi Kapoor and Kishore Kumar for a lesser character. Lyricist was Majrooh Sultanpuri and music was composed by R D Burman.

As I recall, Kishore Kumar version had become more popular with the public and that was certainly the case with me.

As was usually the case, I had no inkling which movie this song was from. Now that I am hopefully more clued in, I find that the song is from “Pyaar ka mausam” in which Shashi Kapoor and Asha Parekh had played the lead roles.

This movie was released in the second half of 1969 and as a result, its songs could not garner enough points in the Binaca geetmala final of 1969. This particular song finished 17th ( having played for 15 weeks, out of a maximum permissible 18 weeks).

Song-Tum bin jaaun kahan ( Pyar ka mausam) (1969) Singer-Rafi/Kishore Kumar, Lyrics- Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD- R D Burman

Lyrics

Rafi version

Tum bin jaaun kahan
tum bin jaaun kahaan, ke duniyaa mein aake
kuchh na phir chaahaa sanam, tumko chaah ke
tum bin jaaun kahaan, ke duniyaa mein aake
kuchh na phir chaahaa sanam, tumko chaah ke
tum bin

dekho mujhe sar se kadam tak
sirf pyaar hoon main
gale se lagaa lo ke tumhaara
bekaraar hoon main
tum kya jaano ke bhatakta fira
kis kis gali
tum ko chaah ke
tum bin jaaun kahaan, ke duniyaa mein aake
kuchh na phir chaahaa sanam, tumko chaah ke
tum bin

ab hai sanam har mausam
pyaar ke kaabil
padi jahan chaaon hamaari
saj gayi mahfil
mahfil kya tanhaayi mein bhi
lagta hai jee
tumko chaahh ke
Tum bin jaaun kahan
tum bin jaaun kahaan, ke duniyaa mein aake
kuchh na phir chaahaa sanam, tumko chaah ke
tum bin

Kishore version

Tum bin jaaun kahan
tum bin jaaun kahaan, ke duniyaa mein aake
kuchh na phir chaahaa kabhi, tumko chaah ke
tum bin jaaun kahaan, ke duniyaa mein aake
kuchh na phir chaahaa kabhi, tumko chaah ke
tum bin
hahaha aa

rah bhi sakoge tum kaise, ho ke mujhse judaa
hat jaayengi deewaaren, sun ke meri sadaa
aanaa hogaa tumhen mere liye
saathi meri, sooni raah ke
tum bin jaaun kahaan, ke duniyaa mein aake
kuchh na phir chaahaa kabhi, tumko chaah ke…

Atul,

There are 2 versions with Rafi and 1 of Kishore’s, so there are 3 in all. I think I had found and posted the link to the third one on my site. I’ll post it back here shortly.

I personally like Kishore’s version a lot. The yodeling/falsetto is pretty good, especially the strength in voice he maintains while he yodels the “A”s, it’s tough to do it at this scale. Did you know Rafi yodeled in some songs too? Not like Kishore, but he did yodel. Kishore’s plus point in yodeling is that his falsetto is not thin like most other people’s, it is still powerful.

Okay, here you go – Rafi’s second (sad) version.

For fun comparisons I had this, it gives a perspective into today’s style. We probably have similar taste for older music, so you’ll see what I am saying. 🙂

I also request you to share the “Chhod Chale Pyaari Duniyako” (it is one of the best tunes where Rafi and Kishore sing together) with your readers. It is at the following link:

Keep up the good work.

Hello, I know and love this song, but never thought about the fact that it was sung by both Rafi & Kishore: I guess if someone had asked me re singer, I would have been stumped!

By the way, Kishore Kumar’s version is picturised on Bharat Bhushan (of Barsaat Li Raat, Mirza Ghalib, etc.) .
i haven’t seen the film but I guess he would be Shashi’s father in the film, singing him this song, who would grow up and sing the song to Asha Parekh.

I like both versions, and it is a gem being able to compare Rafi and Kishore do justice to great music and lyrics in their own styles!

Of course it is Bharat Bhooshan. In this movie, he may have played a lesser role as compared to Shashi Kapoor, but when the history of Bollywood movies is written 100 years from now, Bharat Bhooshan will be regarded as a bigger name than Shashi Kapoor.

I love this song, although I don’t think I’ve seen the film yet…

I love the sad version sung by Rafi saab…it brings me to tears! There is no comparison between Kishore and Rafi, both were perfect in their singing! Both had their varied styles! One yoodled and one immpressed people by his oonchi aawaz and sur, tal and ley…
