Rang barse bheege chunar

Posted on: March 10, 2009

“Silsila” was based on the real life story of Amitabh Bachchan , Jaya Bhaduri and Rekha. To this day, wonder how all three of them agreed to wash their dirty linens in public in this movie.

That was nearly three decades ago. If this movie is now remembered the most for anything, then it is for its songs.

The holi song of this movie in fact became amazingly popular, and there are many who would call it the best Holi song.

This song was written by Hariwansrai Bachchan and sung by Amitabh Bachchan. Music was by Shiv Hari who were better known as Shiv Kumar Sharma (Santoor expert) and Hari Prasad Chaurasiya ( flute expert). They used to work as musicians in the orchestra of music directors like R D Burman, Laxmikant Pyarelal etc, and in this movie they got the opportunity to work as independent music directors.

As mentioned earlier, this song has gone on to become an iconic Holi song.

What a movie this was. The chemistry between Amitabh and Rekha is to be seen to understand. As a viewer you so feel that the two of them should get together. They made a great pair on screen, and I am sure they would have made one off screen too :).

Atul, Silsila has some amazing other numbers too, my all time favorite being Main Aur Meri Tanhayee Aksar Yeh Baatein Karthe Hain, look forward to see you review them. Thanks.

Main Aur Meri Tanhayee – the song is actually called Yeh Kahaan Aa Gaye Hum.

Initially the roll of Jaya and Rekha were to be played by Smaita Patil and Parveen Babi but beacause of Amitabh’s mediation Jaya and Rekha agreed and of course, Yashji was more than happy.

Read in National Herald that Amitabh Bachchan composed the tune for this.
