Patta patta boota boota

Posted on: April 24, 2009

How many people are aware of a movie called “Ek Nazar” ? People may not be aware of such a movie, but there were in fact not one but two movies of such a name. One was released in 1957 and it had a few nice Talat Mahmood songs under the music direction of Ravi. Then there was another movie of this name in 1972, and it too had a nice song, which is the song under discussion here.

This song was originally written by a 18th century shayar called Mir Taqi Mir. Lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri drew inspiration from his work and wrote this song. Prior to him, there were singers like Noorjahan and Mehdi Hasan who had also sung songs based on this Mir Taqi Mir poetry.

Laxmikant Pyarelal is the music director.

The song is “patta patta boota boota haal hamaara jaane hai”. I have heard this song many a times but I was not aware of the movie this song was from. And I suppose even the actors who worked in this movie may not like to remember this movie with any fondness. Yes, this movie had Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri in lead roles, and this was one of the biggest flops in their careers.

Indeed, I think that this song is the only thing that survives from that disaster of a movie.

Song-Patta patta boota boota (Ek Nazar) (1972) Singers-Lata, Rafi, Lyrics- Majrooh Sultanpuri, Mir Taqi Mir, MD- Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

pattaa pattaa bootaa bootaa
haal hamaaraa jaane hai
pattaa pattaa bootaa bootaa
haal hamaaraa jaane hai
patta patta
jaane na jaane gul hi na jaane
baag to saaraa jaane hai
pattaa pattaa bootaa bootaa
haal hamaaraa jaane hai
patta patta

koyi kisi ko chaahe,
to kyun gunaah samjhate hain log
koyi kisi ki khaatir,
tarpe agar to hanste hain log
begaanaa aalam hai saaraa,
yahaan to koyi hamaaraa
dard nahin pahchaane hai,
pattaa pattaa bootaa bootaa
haal hamaaraa jaane hai
patta patta

chaahat ke gul khilenge,
chalti rahen hazaar aandhiyaan
ham to kisi chaman mein,
baandhenge pyaar kaa aashiyaan
ye duniyaa bijli giraaye,
ye duniyaa kaante bichhaaye
ishq magar kab maane hai,
pattaa pattaa bootaa bootaa
haal hamaaraa jaane hai
patta patta

jahaan ko,
kuchh din jo zindgaani hai aur
kaise na ham milenge,
hamne bhi dil mein thaani hai aur
abhi matwaale dilon ki,
muhabbat waale dilon ki
baat koyi kyaa jaane hai,
pattaa pattaa bootaa bootaa
haal hamaaraa jaane hai
patta patta
jaane na jaane gul hi na jaane
baag to saaraa jaane hai,
pattaa pattaa bootaa bootaa
haal hamaaraa jaane hai
patta patta

I have seen this movie. It flopped very badly – there was another Amitabh-Jaya movie of that time, Bansi Birju, which also flopped horribly.

Jaya Bhaduri herself said that she was uncomfortable one time in her acting career and that was in this movie (Ek Nazar). She played the role of a tawaif and she had to do mujras. She was not good at or comfortable with dance. But she had to, for the role. Though she somehow managed it, she hated every minute of it.

This song itself is fantastic. It is a famous ghazal. Am not sure whether it was already famous and is used by Majrooh here or whether it became famous only from here.

Sorry, not Majrooh, I meant Mir Taqi Mir, the lyricist.

I see you explained it yourself. Sorry, did not read that part properly. Indeed it is old poetry that has been used here. Originally Mir Taqi Mir.
