Nafrat ki duniya ko chhod ke pyaar ki duniya mein

on:“Haathi Mere Sathi”(1971) was a dream movie for kids when it was released. The stunts of elephants had kids and elders all enthralled.
Most songs in this movie were happy songs sung by Kishore Kumar and those songs were the most popular.
But the last song of the movie was a sad song and it was sung by Rafi.
Kids like me, who were not much exposed to sadness till that stage naturally did not like this song much those days, though I found grown ups liking this song.
Now that I myself have grown up ( or have I really ?) I find that I too have begun to like this song. Though other songs of this movie are still popular, but this sad song, the least popular song of the movie at that time is now the most popular song of this movie.
This song is written by Anand Bakshi and its music direction was by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
We have many songs mourning the demise of human beings, but this song, mourning the demise of an elephant is as poignant a song as any.

Song-Nafrat ki duniya ko chhod ke pyaar ki duniyaa mein (Haathi Mere Saathi) (1971) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
nafrat ki duniya ko chhod ke
khush rahna mere yaar
nafrat ki duniya ko chhod ke pyaar ki duniya me
khush rahna mere yaar
nafrat ki duniya ko chhod ke pyaar ki duniya me
khush rahna mere yaar
is jhooth ki nagri se tod ke naata ja pyaare
amar rahe teraa pyaar
khush rahna mere yaar
jab jaanwar koyi insaan ko maare
jab jaanwar koyi insaan ko maare
kahte hain duniyaa mein wahshi use saare
ik jaanwar ki jaan aaj insaanon ne li hai
chup kyun hai sansaar
khush rahna mere yaar
bas aakhri sunle ye mel hai apna
bas aakhri sunle ye mel hai apna
bas khatm ai saathi ye khel hai apna
ab yaad mein teri beet jaayenge ro ro ke
jeewan ke din chaar
nafrat ki duniya ko chhod ke pyaar ki duniya me
khush rahna mere yaar
khush rahna mere yaar
khush rahna mere yaar
khush rahna mere yaar

Indeed. I also remember seeing the circus and the movie around the same time.
And at that time even I did not like this song much. Especially because I HATED that elephant dying. I hated Sujit Kumar for a while because of this. 🙂
Now I like this song a lot and was only singing it yesterday.
In particular I like these words :
jab jaanwar koyi insaan ko maare
jab jaanwar koyi insaan ko maare
kahte hain duniyaa mein wahshi use saare
ik jaanwar ki jaan aaj insaanon ne li hai
chup kyun hai sansaar

what a lovely number na? from those times when we were kids. and we used to think the elephant had actually died. and feel relieved when we saw it again at the circus. how were we to know that it was a different elephant!
anyway all these animals were supposed to be from the producer “Devar Films” stable. and they made quite a few animal based films back then probably coz there was no Maneka Gandhi or PETA to stop them!!!

Love this song, so sad :-(, such lovely lyrics.
Here’s an anecdote from Kaka on the film as told to Bhawana Somaaya which was published in the Junior G magazine as “Echoes of an Era”, not quite sure when though.
“Haathi Mere Saathi came to me because other heroes didn’t want
to share the credit with elephants. Also because working with
animals isn’t always comfortable. The film not only proved to
be a smashing hit but it was a trendsetter of sorts. An
unforgettable incident happened during the making of HMS. As I
entered the set one day, I saw Chinappa Devar hitting a small
boy with a stick. When I asked Devarsaab, why he was doing
this, Devarsaab replied, ‘this boy is paying for your crime,
Sir. You report late for work everyday. I cannot tell you
anything because you are a superstar. But I have to give vent
to my anger.’ After this, on Devarsaab’s set at least, I never
reported late for shooting.”
Pretty mean of Devar…

Cool. I am assuming that Rajesh Khanna knew that those lions and tigers were tamed before acting in the midst of them. I especially liked how the elephants participated.
So used to hearing Kishore Kumar’s voice coming out of him.
