Tere bachpan ko jawaani ki duaa deti hoon

Posted on: September 20, 2009

I have posted several “lullabies” (lori) in this blog. This song too is a lori, but with a major difference from the normal lallabies.

The infant may be like any other kid, but his parents are different from normal parents. His father is a “daaku” and a fugitive from the law. His wife and kid too stay with him and as such they lead a tough and insecure life, forever on the run from law. How does a woman, who is like any other mother, feel about her situation. Her kid deserves to have a childhood like any other child, but the sins of her parents cast their shadow over the kid’s life. It is obvious that the kid cannot hope to have a normal happy childhood.

The pain that the mother feels about the situation is expressed superbly in this lori written by Sahir Ludhianvi and sung by Lata. Jaidev is the music director.

This is a song that is bound to move anyone who listens to it. It must be one the most heart rending songs composed in Bollywood. And it is picturised extremely effectively on Waheeda Rehman, Sunil Dutt and others.

I listened to this song for the first time only just now. What a song !

Song-Tere bachpan ko jawaani ki duaa deti hoon (Mujhe Jeene Do) (1963) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Jaidev

Lyrics

Tere bachpan ko jawaani ki duaa deti hoon
tere bachpan ko jawaani ki duaa deti hoon
aur duaa deke pareshaan si ho jaati hoon

mere munne mere guldaar(?) ke nanhe paudhe
tujhko haalaat ki aandhi se bachaane ke liye
aaj main pyaar ke aanchal mein chhupaa leti hoon
kal ye kamzor sahaaraa bhi na haasil hogaa
kal ye kamzor sahaaraa bhi na haasil hogaa
kal tujhe kaanton bhari raah pe chalnaa hogaa
zindagaani ki kadi dhoop mein jalnaa hogaa
tere bachpan ko jawaani ki duaa deti hoon
aur duaa deke pareshaan si ho jaati hoon

tere maathe pe sharaafat ki koyi mohar nahin
chand bose hain muhabbat ke so wo bhi kya hain
mujh si maaon ki muhabbat kaa koyi mol nahin
mujh si maaon ki muhabbat kaa koyi mol nahin
mere maasoom farishte tu abhi kyaa jaane
tujhko kis-kis ke gunaahon ki sazaa milni hai
deen aur dharm ke maare huye insaanon ki
jo nazar milni hai tujhko wo khafaa milni hai
tere bachpan ko jawaani ki duaa deti hoon
aur duaa deke pareshaan si ho jaati hoon

bediyaan leke lapaktaa huaa kaanoon kaa haath
bediyaan leke
bediyaan leke lapaktaa huaa kaanoon kaa haath
tere maan-baap se jab tujhko mili ye saugaat
kaun laayegaa tere waaste khushiyon ki baaraat
kaun laayegaa tere waaste khushiyon ki baaraat
mere bachche tere anjaam se ji dartaa hai
teri dushman hi na saabit ho jawaani teri
kaanp jaati hai jise sochke mamtaa meri
usi anjaam ko pahunche na kahaani teri
tere bachpan ko jawaani ki duaa deti hoon
aur duaa deke pareshaan si ho jaati hoon
aur duaa deke pareshaan si ho jaati hoon
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm

Wow – grief with dignity without becoming a maudlin sob story. Waheeda, Lata, Sahir, jaidev- and you Atul- thanks to all.
