Maine chaand aur sitaaron ki tamanna ki thi

Posted on: October 14, 2009

When I started this blog, remembering which songs I had posted and which were yet to be posted was easy in the beginning. One could remember it in one’s mind. But as the number of songs increased, I needed to keep track of them, because sometimes ( on two or three occasions) I repeated the same song. Thankfully some of my alert readers pointed this fact out to me, and I replaced the duplicated song with another song.

It becomes interesting to note how (computer) technology can help keeping track of such things. I am not a very good user of computer technologies, but I find myself inadvertently using quite a few computer related technologies and softwares while dealing with this blog.

For instance, I use editpad ( a vastly improved version of notepad) where I can have several tabs open (and several tabs do remain open) where I type out the drafts related to forthcoming posts.

Then I have good old excel spreadsheet, where I have a list of all the songs that I have posted, along with its various fields like name of movie, singers, music directors etc. That way, if I am posting a duplicate post by mistake, I know it immediately. In this excel spreadsheet too, I have several sheets. One sheet is for the farmaishes sent by my readers. It has columns for date of farmaish as well as date of compliance. So those readers, who may think that their farmaishes have not been considered can rest assured that I have noted down all farmaishes and I look at this sheet regularly.

There are many ways in which I pick the songs to be posted. One is the usual way of pottering around in youtube, dailymotion etc and stumbing upon “new” songs. Another way is to specifically look for a particular song. Sometimes it may take ages before I come across that song. Sometimes, I decide that the song is too rare to be available. In case I have some such rare songs with me, then I decide to upload them myself. And that calls for use of some more technologies related to audio/ video editing.

If I have to pick the best songs that I have not yet posted, I just need to look at my excel spreadsheet tab. It has hundreds of farmaishes. And all these songs are gems. I have posted many songs from this list, and I noticed that these songs became popular with the readers. There are still many songs that are yet to be complied.

I have been looking at the uncomplied songs, and what songs they are. They are great songs from the past which have been forgotten with time. For instance, here is this song- “maine chaand aur sitaaron ki tamanna ki thi”. It is an unforgettable song for those who have listened to it. But like many great songs of the past, this song is from an obscure movie.

This song is from “Chandrakaanta” (1956). It is sung by Rafi. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist and N Datta is the music director.

I must take this opportunity to thank Lalitha, whose farmaish it is. Her list of farmaish consists of gems after gems from the golden era of Bollywood music and if I need to draw a list of the best songs that Bollywood has to offer, I need only produce the list of her farmaishes.

So thank you, madam. Your farmaishes have added immensely to my knowledge of the great Bollywood songs and continue to do so.

PS-HFGK mentions this song as a multi part song. The portion beginning with “meri raahon se judaa ho gayi raahen unki” is described as part II of the song. So this song is counted as two songs in HFGK.

Song-Maine chaand aur sitaaron ki tamaana ki thi (Chandrakaanta) (1956) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-N Datta

Lyrics

maine chaand aur sitaaron ki tamannaa ki thi
maine chaand aur sitaaron ki tamannaa ki thi
mujhko raaton ki siyaahi ke siwaa kuchh na milaa
maine chaand aur sitaaron ki tamannaa ki thi

main wo naghmaa hoon jise pyaar ki mahfil na mili
main wo naghmaa hoon jise pyaar ki mahfil na mili
wo musaafir hoon jise koyi bhi manzil na mili
wo musaafir hoon jise koyi bhi manzil na mili
zakhm paayen hain bahaaron ki tamannaa ki thi
maine chaand aur sitaaron ki tamannaa ki thi

kisi gesu kisi aanchal kaa sahaaraa bhi nahin
kisi gesu kisi aanchal kaa sahaaraa bhi nahin
raaste mein koyi dhundhlaa saa sitaaraa bhi nahin
raaste mein koyi dhundhlaa saa sitaaraa bhi nahin
meri nazron ne nazaaron ki tamannaa ki thi
maine chaand aur sitaaron ki tamannaa ki thi
mujhko raaton ki siyaahi ke siwaa kuchh na milaa
maine chaand aur sitaaron ki tamannaa ki thi

——————————————————
meri raahon se judaa ho gayin raahen unki
meri raahon se judaa ho gayin raahen unki
aaj badli nazar aati hain nigaahen unki
aaj badli nazar aati hain nigaahen unki
jinse is dil ne sahaaron ki tamannaa ki thi
maine chaand aur sitaaron ki tamannaa ki thi

pyaar maangaa to sisakte huye armaan mile
pyaar maangaa to sisakte huye armaan mile
chain chaahaa to umadte huye toofaan mile
chain chaahaa to umadte huye toofaan mile
doobte dil ne kinaaron ki tamannaa ki thi
maine chaand aur sitaaron ki tamannaa ki thi
mujhko raaton ki siyaahi ke siwaa kuchh na milaa
maine chaand aur sitaaron ki tamannaa ki thi

Thank you, Atul, for playing this lovely song, sung with so much feeling by Rafi. I have to thank my youngest aunt and uncle who used to hum and sing these songs at home, from whom I learned to love these songs, and of course, the fact that I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s helps!

It is so wonderful to have a site like this where I can come and find all my old favorites whenever I want to listen to some good, old fashioned songs. Thanks, Atul, for doing this for all of us.

Thanks, Atul, for a lovely intro here – this time giving us an insight into what it all takes to put together one song out here. We all really appreciate the love and dedication with which you go about compiling and indexing the songs, writing up the lyrics and the intro. Labour of love, like you have said so many times.

Coming to this song, it is another beautiful song by Rafi saab. I have always loved this song.

Mr. Atul, thank you very much for this song, I was searching for this song from past many years, amazing, wonder full, marvels, beautiful, mind-blowing and much more. I am fan of Md. Rafi, Talat mahmood, Mukesh & K.L. Saiegal. All the credit goes to Lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi saab, I always wonder how this poets write this type of songs, what makes them to write?. How they work on each line from starting to end. Beautifully sung by md. Rafi saab, I am always admirer of him. The music director Mr. N. Datta saab score beautifully particularly in between the song. It also picturies on, one my favorites actor Bhrath Bhushan.
Mr. Atul, when ever I listen to this song I think the time will stop for a while, I have listen this song only on radio I will be waiting for this song to played. I have no words explain………………..

You need to look for the VCD/DVD of the movie, which could be available.

What a great song. Its interseting how obscure movies are only remebered just because of Rafi songs like this one. There are many other movies which we remember just because of Rafi gems such as Nag Mandir (khamosh Zindagi Ko), Papi (Tera Kaam Hai Jalna Parwane), Jaal (Akela Hoon Mein Humsafar Dhoondta Hoon) , Biwi (Akele Mein Wo Ghabrate To Honge), Oonchi Havei (Daulat Ke Jhoote nashe Mein Ho Choor), Punar Milan (Paas betho Tabiat Behl) and many many more. Readers please add to this list.

“They say the eyes are the windows of the soul. You could say that the voice is the music of the soul.” This is a beautiful memorable song by Rafisaab…Song is based on haunting lyrics and captivating harmonies. His vocals shift and bend with a vibrato effect, so this one makes fine treat for the ears. Rafisaab continues channeling music at transcendentally stratospheric levels! He knew the full value of words in relation to music. Some how this song rarely played on AIR or Radio Ceylon but it did played regularly on Radio Pakistan.

Thank you prakashbhai for the reply. This is my brother’s fav song of Rafi. I remember hearing this song on radio vividh bharati when I was a teen. Baad mein mere bhai ne cassette player kharida and obviously his first cassette was of Rafi with this song. It was only during that time I listened. Tabhi se le ke aaj tak… jab bhi ye geet yaad aaye to lagta hai ki sun ne ke bina chain nahi aayega.

Hope someone has a copy of this movie or at least video of this song and would upload it.

This is a gorgeous, supernal song! Rafi Sahab is simply eternal. N Dutta or Datta Naik Sahab, the MD, had an early and continuing association with Sahir Sahab, and this song was one of the very early ventures. As many have mentioned already, the film “Chandrakanta” has been lost, pretty much. Perhaps there is a 35 mm print in the Film Institute Archives in Poona, but that is about all I can think of.

My favourite lines are in the refrain:

Mujhko raaton ki siyaahi ke siwaa kuchh na mila
Meine chaand aur sitaaron ki tamanna ki thi

Sahir Sahab’s marvellous phrasing strikes straight into the heart — the ink (inky darkness) of those nights — and there is an evocation in that phrase that is remarkable. Jaise kalam mein syaahi lag rahen hain, waise dil mein raaton ki syaahi bhi lag rahen hain. And it is with this pen that the poet writes his verse.! Sahir’s own life and his personal sorrows form a kind of background to his verses.

There has been a group of young singers singing old songs beautifully (Sangeeta Melekar, Rana Chatterji, Surohit Guha, Neelima Gokhaley, Anil Bajpai, Shailaja Subramaniam, Shrikant Pargaonkar, etc,) and they are posted on Youtube. To my mind, this group does an outstanding job of bringin these lovely old songs to light. I too gre up in the 1950s and 60s, and this musci was the background to my childhood and youth.

Here is Anil Bajpai (Anil-ji sings Rafi Sahab;s songs very well) singing this song with emotion and joy. The woman visible at some points in the clip is Neelima Gokhaley.

Keep up the great work, Atul Sahab and friends!

Kind regards,

Sahir’s Sahib’s poetry is way apart from that of contemprory poets .His weighty words fully aided by Rafi Sahib’s voice along with N Dutta’s musical acumen penetrate deeply into your mind .
” Pyaar Maanga Tha Sissakte Huye Armaan Mile ”
” Chain Chaaha Umandte Huge Toofan Mile ”
” Meri Nazaron Ne Nazaaron Ki Tamanna Ki Thi ‘

Lovely song. It had an additional stanza, probably the last one:

Dil mein nakaam umeedon ke basere paaye,
Roshani lene ko nikla to andhere paaye..
Rang aur noor ke dhaaron ki tamanna ki thi
Maine chaand aur sitaaron ki

I am not sure whether it was included in the movie as most copies available on the net seem not to have it. But if my memory serves me right, Rafi did sing it. I remember hearing it many years ago. Does anyone have the entire song with this stanza?
