Ghareeb jaan ke na tum hamen mitaa denaa

Posted on: November 2, 2009

This song “ghareeb jaan ke na tum haman mita dena” from “Chhoomantar” (1956) is one song from this movie that is well known to me for the last thirty years. This song is one of those songs that I had noted down in my diary of 1970s in which I used to note down the songs that I liked those days.

This song is sung by Rafi and Geeta Dutt. Jaan Nissar Akhtar is the lyricist and O P Nayyar composed the music.

Though I have been listening to this song for over three decades, I watched the picturisation of the song for the first time only just now. I can see that this song is picturised on Johny Walker and Anita Guha, who were the lead actors of this movie.

So here is this lovely song, which was well known to listeners till about 1970s before this song became forgotten.
PS-Now I have come to know that this song is a multiple version song. Apart from the Rafi-Geeta Dutt duet version, it has a Rafi solo version too. I have now provided lyrics of both the versions.

ghareeb jaan ke
ghareeb jaan ke ham ko na tum mita dena
tumhi ne dard diyaa
tumhi ne dard diyaa hai tumhi dawaa denaa
ghareeb jaan ke

lagi hai chot kaleje pe umr bhar ke liye
lagi hai chot kaleje pe umr bhar ke liye
tadap rahe hain muhabbat mein ik nazar ke liye
nazar milaa ke
nazar milaa ke muhabbat se muskura dena
tumhi ne dard diyaa hai tumhi dawaa denaa
ghareeb jaan ke

jahaan mein aur hamaara kahaan thhikaana hai
jahaan mein aur hamaara kahaan thhikaana hai
tumhaare dar se kahaan uthhke hamko jaana hai
jo ho sakey to
jo ho sakey to muqaddar mera jagaa denaa
tumhi ne dard diyaa hai tumhi dawaa denaa
ghareeb jaan ke

milaa qaraar na dil ko kisi bahaane se
milaa qaraar na dil ko kisi bahaane se
tumhaari aas lagaaye hain ik zamaane se
kabhi to apni
kabhi to apni muhabbat ka aasraa denaa
tumhi ne dard diyaa hai tumhi dawaa denaa
ghareeb jaan ke

Duet version

nazar tumhaari mere dil ki baat kehti hai
nazar tumhaari mere dil ki baat kehti hai
tumhaari yaad to din raat saathh rehti hai
tumhaari yaad ko
tumhaari yaad ko mushqil hai ab bhula dena
tumhi ne dard diyaa hai tumhi dawaa denaa
tumhi ne dard diyaa

milega kya jo ye duniya hamen sataayegi
milega kya jo ye duniya hamen sataayegi
tumhaare bin to hamen maut bhi na aayegi
kisi ke pyaar ko
kisi ke pyaar ko aasaan nahin mita dena
tumhi ne dard diyaa hai tumhi dawaa denaa
ghareeb jaan ke

Thanks for this wonderful song, Atul! It was a surprise to see that this song has been filmed on Johnny Walker, while I always imagined a Sunil Dutt or Balraj Sahni singing this song. Shows how one can be mistaken!

Beautiful song, with an old time touch. Really when hearing such song on radio all those years ago, we never used to wonder what is the video visual like. We were happy enough with the melody. One of the top 5 Rafi-Geeta duets, for sure.

I agree with Lalitha, was a surprise to see that the song was picturised on Johny Walker. Just goes to show the dedication of Rafi Saab, he used to give his best, irrespective of the actor he was singing the song for.
