on:Bappi Lahiri is today remembered as the person who triggered degradation of Bollywood music with his “disco” music. But that is not how he began his career. Bappi Lahiri began his career by composing some outstanding music in his initial movies, viz “Zakhmee” (1975), “Chalte Chalte” (1976) etc.
We have seen in the case of music directors like Madan Mohan, Jaidev etc that giving outstanding and timeless music is not enough for one’s career if the movie in question flops. Madan Mohan, Jaidev etc failed to get too many assignments because the movies they worked in were mostly box office disasters and these movies would often pull the music down with them.
So one cannot blame Bappi Lahiri if he decided sometime in late 1970s that he wanted to be successful even if it meant coming up with trashy music.
“Toote Khilaune” (1978) must have been one of the movies that may have prompted Bappi Lahiri to say “to hell with quality music which no one would listen.” This movie had some outstanding music, but except for one song, other songs failed to catch up, mainly because the movie, featuring Shekhar Kapoor (later on he bacame a noted director) and Shabana Azmi bombed at the box office.
The one popular song from this movie was “maana ho tum behad haseen” sung by Yesudas. Apart from this, other songs failed to get popular with the listeners.
Out of these forgotten song, there was an outstanding song sung by Kishore Kumar. I recall having heard this song once or twice in Radio Ceylon, and that was it. If such songs cannot become popular, then Bappi Lahiri to my mind could not be blamed for deciding to create songs that became “popular”.
This lovely song is penned by Kaifi Azmi. Yes, Bappi Lahiri used to work with outstanding lyricists such as Kaifi Azmi those days.
I have no idea whom this song is picturised on. In fact, I had to search hard to get hold of this elusive song. Just listen to this song. What a song it is !

Lyrics
ho ho ho
ho ho ho
ho ho ho
ho ho ho ho ho
ho
nanha sa pachchi re tu
bahut bada pinjra tera
nanha sa pachchi re tu
bahut bada pinjra tera
udna jo chaaha bhi
kahaan tujhe udne diya
udna jo chaaha bhi
kahaan tujhe udne diya
leke tu pinjra ude
chale kabhi aisi hawaa
panchi re panchchi re
nanha sa pachchi re tu
bahut bada pinjra tera
ho
naye tere armaan hain
naye tere sapne
nayi nayi manzil hain
naye naye raste
naye tere armaan hain
naye tere sapne
nayi nayi manzil hain
naye naye raste
wahaan tujhe udna hai
ham jahaan nahin pahunche
wahaan tujhe udna hai
ham jahaan nahin pahunche
panchchi re panchchi re
nanha sa pachchi re tu
bahut bada pinjra tera
nanha sa pachchi re tu
bahut bada pinjra tera
ho
bade haseen rishte hain
badi haseen duniya
yahi tere bandhan hain
yahi tera pinjraa
bade haseen rishte hain
badi haseen duniya
yahi tere bandhan hain
yahi tera pinjraa
khule tere baazu to khule abhi pinjraa
ho
khule tere baazu to khule abhi pinjraa
panchchi re panchchi re
nanha sa pachchi re tu
bahut bada pinjra tera
udna jo chaaha bhi
kahaan tujhe udne diya
udna jo chaaha bhi
kahaan tujhe udne diya
leke tu pinjra ude
chale kabhi aisi hawaa
panchchi re panchchi re
panchchi re panchchi re

Hi Atul,
i had sent a mail to you sometime back on the wonderful endeavour taken up by you of compiling thousands of songs from every possible genre and movies. kudos to you…it is such a breather for music lovers like us 🙂
I scanned hard through the blog but was unable to locate an amazingly sensuous song by Rafi saab from Aakhri Khat, ‘aur kuch der theher, aur kuch der na ja’. would be glad if you put it up in the blog. i heard it only once on AIR and was hooked the very first time. ..
Cheers!!!

Hi, A wonderful effort. It’s very nice of you to put all thse songs and also farmaish poori kerte hain.
Just one point, those days Movie flop/ht was not major issue for songs to be hit. Eg: Parasmani was a big flop initially. But when people heard the melodious songs, they went to watch the movie,, and movie was a big hit…
Madan Mohan and Jaidev are not comparable. Jaidev had few assignments.
But every gem of Madan Mohan comes from a well known movie.

Oh, I used to love this song “nanha sa panchhi…”. Have not heard it for ages.
I have not seen Toote Khilone but I remember Shekhar Kapur was the hero of the movie.
As for Ahsaas, I remember the songs of this movie very well. There was this song “jo na chhote hain na badey, badey mushquil mein wo padey…” Nice song with terrific lyrics.

I did not see Ahsaas in the hall. Only listened to the songs – which I liked a lot. If I am not mistaken, Ahsaas had an “A” certificate (i.e Adults movie).

This is one of the best songs of Kishore Kumar from that era. And I always wondered why it was never as popular as the Yesudas number. In the 90’s I really had to hunt far-and-wide to get hold of this song. I finally did find a cassette of Toote Khilone. At least those days, this song did not feature in any of the compilations of Kishore K. Talking of a lovely Kishore+ Bhappi combo from the same era, there is this rare song called “Kitney Ranjhey tujhey dekh key bairagi ban gaye”. This is from a film (I cannot recollect the name right now) from the Sippy banner and with newcomers in lead roles. Wonder if this song features in this blog.

This song is from a very difficult to find movie called “Ahsaas” which sank without a trace. I must be one of the few movie watchers who watched this movie, that too first day first show, and realised that this movie was the worst movie ever that I had seen till then. And that could well have been the reason why I managed to get a ticket for this movie in the first day first show itself.
I have posted another song from this movie in this blog. I will post this song too provided I can find a link for it.
