Ichak daanaa beechak daanaa daane oopar daanaa

Posted on: August 17, 2010

I just realised that I had not posted this well known song from “Shree 420” (1955) so far. Here is this lovely and cute song.

This song “ichak daanaa beechak daana daane oopar daanaa” is a song which is picturised as a “paheli” “Brain teaser”. Such “brain teasers” where hints are given and people are asked to guess the answer were quite popular in India till a few decades ago, viz till my generation. I do not think that the present generation of kids, who are brought up on TV cartoons etc are that much keen on “paheli” now a days.

Nargis is a school teacher and she is asking school kids pahelis. Alongwith kids, Raj Kapoor is also listening to these pahelis and he too tries to guess the answers, but unlike the kids, he is always wrong in his answers and the kids always get the answers right. In the end, Raj Kapoor too asks a paheli and this time Nargis is stumped, because this paheli is a spur of the moment invention of Raj Kapoor and he alone knows the answer of the paheli.

The lyrics of this song is by Hasrat Jaipuri and he has been at his creative best in coming up with this lovely song. I have been listening to this song since my childhood, but I never paid much attention to the lyrics. It is only now that I have become aware with the lyrics of the song and I have realised how witty and cute the song really is.

Lata sings the song and Mukesh joins in towards the end. Shankar Jaikishan composed the music. The picturisation is wonderful and Nargis, playing a humble school teacher looks gorgeous and she steals the show.

Here is this wonderful paheli song “Ichak daanaa beechak daanaa daane oopar daana”.

Here, I am reminded of a lovely anecdote about this song.Former Indian cricketer, B S Chandrashekhar was a great fan of Mukesh and he was a big collector of Mukesh songs. In 1990s, Zee TV’s “Antaakshari” show had invited celebrities including B S Chandrashekhar on the show. In that Antakshari, whatever be the letter from which Chandrashekhar was to sing, he would manage to come up with a suitable Mukesh song. It showed how big a Mukesh specialist he was. When he was required to sing a song beginning with “I”, he came up with this song “ichak daana bichak daanaa daane oopar daana”. But he sang the next line as

“ladkaa oopar ladki naache ,ladkaa hai deewaanaa”. There the host Anu Malik corrected him by saying that the line was “chajje oopar ladki naache, ladkaa hai deewaanaa”, much to everyone’s amusement

Ha ha…I remember that Antakshari programme. It was fun. Chandra was a great Mukesh fan. Apparently even on the field of play, he would sing Mukesh songs. 🙂
Nice song.

My cousin and I used to sing this song a lot when we were kids, and today I found that I couldn’t remember the part about the bhutta, so when we came home, I checked here to find the lyrics. That is the best part about this blog, when I can’t remember the lyrics, all I have to do is open up this blog and there it is! Thanks, Atul, for providing this site.

I too enjoyed going through the contents of this writeup again.Full and accurate lyrics are what I strive to provide and I am happy that you could get the lyrics of this song here.
