Koi nahin mera iss duniyaa mein

Posted on: September 1, 2010

When one looks at songs that end up as timeless songs, sad songs will form a good proportion of these songs. Lyrics of these songs contribute the most in making these songs memorable.

Here is a memorable sad song from “Daag” (1952). No one can express the feelings of sorrow like the lyricists of Hindi movies of the past. And here Hasrat Jaipuri has excelled in expressing the feelings of sadness, sorrow, despair and helplessness that the hero, Dilip Kumar feels. Talat Mehmood’s silken voice vocalises the lyrics, accompanied by Shankar Jaikishan’s sombre music.

If one understands the language, then one will find this song a superb song of its genre. For those not familiar with the language, they need decent translation to know what is being said. The video clip has some sort of translation, but it is so atrociously bad and inaccurate that it makes me angry. This translation where “aasmaan saiyyad hai” is translated as “sky is my witness” is a disgrace and totally inaccurate. It does a big disservice to the brilliant lyrics of Hasrat Jaipuri. It is better to leave these songs untranslated if one is incapable of understanding the original language.

Providing translation of songs, especially songs like this, is a time consuming job and that will cut my regular outturn of songs to one third and more, and therefore I no longer provide translations of songs. But I felt strongly about the atrocious translation and so I spent time to provide the translation of this song, which is far different from the “translation” accompanying the video of this song.

Song-Koi nahin mera is duniyaa mein (Daag) (1952) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

chaand ek bewaa ki choodi ki tarah tootaa huaa
har sitaaraa besahaaraa soch mein doobaa huaa
gham ke baadal, ik janaaze ki tarah thahre huye
siskiyon ke saaz par kahtaa hai dil rotaa huaa
koi nahin meraa is duniyaa mein
aashiyaan barbaad hai
aansoo bhari mujhe qismat mili hai
zindagi naashaad hai
koi nahin meraa is duniyaa mein
aashiyaan barbaad hai

jaa hawaa tu rastaa le apna
qismat hai meri ji ke tadapnaa
jaa hawaa tu rastaa le apna
qismat hai meri ji ke tadapnaa
aayi hai mere gham pe jawaani
roti huyi ik yaad hai
koi nahin meraa is duniyaa mein
aashiyaan barbaad hai

sookh chuke hain aankhon ke jharne
loot liyaa hamen daag-e-jigar ne
sookh chuke hain aankhon ke jharne
loot liyaa hamen daag-e-jigar ne
phool nahin ye zakhm khile hain
phool nahin ye zakhm khile hain
aasmaan saiyyaad hai
aasmaan saiyyaad hai
koi nahin meraa is duniyaa mein
aashiyaan barbaad hai
koi nahin meraa is duniyaa mein
aashiyaan barbaad hai

mausam dukhon kaa sar par hai chaayaa
mujhse judaa hai khud meraa saaya
mausam dukhon kaa sar par hai chaayaa
mujhse judaa hai khud meraa saayaa
ham hain akele gam ke hain mele
rooh ki fariyaad hai
koi nahin meraa is duniyaa mein
aashiyaan barbaad hai

Translation

moon appears like the broken bangles of a widow
every star is an orphan, immersed in thought
clouds of sorrow stand still, like a funeral
my crying heart speaks, accompanied by the music of sobs
I have no one to call mine in this world
I have a broken home to look forward to
My destiny is filled with tears
there is unhappiness in my life
I have no one to call mine in this world
I have a broken home to look forward t

go away,o cool breeze
staying alive and get tortured is my destiny
my sorrow has come to its culmination
my past too are memories full of sadness
I have no one to call mine in this world
I have a broken home to look forward to

tears from my eyes have dried up
I am overcome with sorrow
it is not flowers, it is my wounds that are in bloom
sky is a predator
I have no one to call mine in this world
I have a broken home to look forward to

Season of sorrow has arrived upon me
my own shadow has deserted me
I am lonely and sadness has engulfed me in droves
my soul is crying for mercy
I have no one to call mine in this world
I have a broken home to look forward to
