Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Mat bolo bahaar ki batiyaan re

Posted on: September 5, 2010

While looking up information about Naushad, I found out that he made his debut as a music director in 1940 in a movie called “Prem Nagar”. In this movie he composed as many as 13 songs. Those are the days when actors themselves used to sing their own songs.

Here is the very first song from the movie that appears immediately after the movie begins. This song shows a few village ladies singing and dancing and then a villageman joins them in the singing.

The song is written by D N Madhok. The song is sung by Bimla Kumari and Prof. Ramanand Sharma.

Naushad, the debutant music director of this movie, soon came into his own and he, alongwith a few other pioneers, soon defined the course that Hindi movie music would take in its journey in the coming years.

I find this song quite nice to listen to and the sound quality is quite good despite the technological limitations of sound recording those days.

So here is this historical song from “Prem Nagar” (1940), which is the very first song composed by Naushad in his career as a music director.

Song-Mat bolo bahaar ki batiyaan re (Prem Nagar) (1940) Singers-Bimla Kumari, Prof Ramanand Sharma, Lyrics-D N Madhok,MD-Naushad

Atul ji,

There were 2 actresses by name Bimla kumari sr / Bimla kumari jr.
The senior one acted from 1934 to 1940 only, in 12 films. She was a singer also and sang 13 songs in her 4 films. She worked in films Simhasan-34, Prem lakshya-36, baghi Sipahi-36, prem kahani-37, milap-37, Izzat-37, Double cross-38, Baghbaan-38, Vachan-38, Zambo ka beta-39, Daughters of India-39, Jhuti sharm-40 and prem nagar-40. She sometimes used name Vimla / Devi also.
The second was Bimla kumari junior. Bimla was a starlet in Bollywood films from late 40s to early 60s. She will always be remembered as the “Lal Dupatta” girl because that famous song “Hawa mein udta jayey” from Barsaat (1949) was picturized on her. Besides Barsaat, another memorable role of hers was in Albela (1951) as Bhagwan’s sister. Other notable films include Sunehre Din (1949), Sargam (1950) and Shrimatiji (1952). She left Bombay in 1954 to work for Vauhini Studios in Madras. Later, she came back and worked primarily as a dancer in more Hindi films including Do Ustad (1959) and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) before disappearing into oblivion. She worked in Sunehare din-49,Barsat-49,Sargam-50, Shri ganesh Mahima-50, Badi bahu-51, Albela-51, Anand math-52, Shrimati ji-52, Sheesha-52, Gorilla-53,Inaam-55, Raja Vikram-57, Aadhi Roti-57, Detective-58, keechak Vadh-59, Guest House-59, Do Ustad-59, Bazigar-60, Angulimal-60, Sahib Bibi aur ghulam-62, Madam Zorro-62 and Tarzan and Gorilla-64.
