Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ae dilrubaa nazren milaa

Posted on: November 2, 2010

In my bid to post all Sajjad Hussain songs, here is a song from “Rustam Sohrab” (1963) which is popularly (but incorrectly) considerded as the last movie of Sajjad Hussain as music director.

This song is sung by Lata. Jaan Nissaar Akhtar is the lyricist.

Listening to the song, including its music is a wonderful experience.

Song-Ae dilruba nazren milaa (Rustam Sohrab) (1963) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Jaan Nissar Akhtar, MD-Sajjad Hussain

Lyrics

Heard it before , may be in my teens.
forgot it.
But today i enjoyed it very much.
Seems to be a rarest combination of composition and singing.
Found a lost gem.
Thanks.

I am not a Lata fan, but she is outstanding in this song… The music is minimal and allows the singer to ”emote” freely. All the credit to the music director.

Atul Ji, Jaan Nissaar Akhtar is mentioned as the music director in the article :).

Atul ji,

The song is filmed on Vinita Bhatt, who was in the song ” jane kahan mera jigar gaya ji” along with Johnny Walker, from the film Mr. and Mrs.55.
New evidence has come to light that she is currently living in Valsad (Gujarat).
One Ms. hazel garett has surfaced on Cineplot and left a comment that she was the daughter of Jimmy Vining-the man with whom Vinita (Yasmin-her screen name given by Guru Dutt for film ‘mr.and mrs 55’) was engaged and hence left the film industry. Obviously hazel must not be her daughter since she does not anything about her, which means she either did not marry jimmy or divorced afterwards.
In any case after ‘Rustom Sohrab-63,she did not appear in any other film.

The originality at its best !
I’m always perplexed as to how people (producers/directors) dared to ignore Sajjad Husain – simply because of his behaviour – this is just like an homicide for all of us.
Again, many have composed in Arabian style but no one like him., This is one of the best arabian style song ever composed in hindi films. What an introductory aalap by Latabai & the just listen to the delicate prolonged delivery of the last word of dilrubaaaaa … pure bliss.
The off beat music & instrumentation plus a carefree smooth notes by Latabai is mind boggling. Even Latabai have confessed that she learnt from Sajjad only as how to take an aalap with suppressed vocals (dabe sawar mein) & carefree notes … and that’s exactly what she has done here.
A desert boon & a perfect Arabian night romantic song !
