Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Dil na lagaanaa meri jaan dil na lagaanaa

Posted on: February 22, 2011

I keep stumbling against unknown and unheard of gems almost every day. Look what I discovered just now !

Here is a fantastic light hearted song from as far back as 1944 ! Yes, this song is from “Laal Haweli” (1944). In this song, men are cautioned aaginst falling in love with women. Don’t trust their promises, for they cannot keep them. Nature has taught them how to steal hearts, so you better beware. The two ponytalis than women sport are cobras in disguise, so better keep your distance from them- This and some other interesting advise is given to men who plan to fall in love in them.

The interesting lyrics are by Shams Lucknowi and music is composed by Meer Sahab. The song is sung by none other than C Ramchandra, who used to sing songs under the name of Chitalkar those days. I have mostly heart C Ramchandra singing songs under his own music direction, but it is the first time I have come across a song where C Ramcharda sings a song under the music direction of some other composer.

The actor on whom this song is picturised seems familiar. Could it be Mumtaz Ali (Mehmood’s father)? I request my knowledgeable readers to help identify the actor.
PS- The actor is Yakoob. The person with the umbrella in the beginning of the song is Kanhaiyyalal. I thank Sudhir for these identifications.

Here is this wonderful gem of a song from “Laal Haweli ” (1944) which I present to my readers within one hour of discovering it.

Song-Dil na lagaanaa meri jaan dil na lagaanaa (Laal Haweli) (1944) Singer-C Ramchandra, Lyrics-Shams Lucknowi, MD-Meer Sahab

Lyrics

tum bhool ke fande mein haseenon ke na aanaa
tum bhool ke fande mein haseenon ke na aanaa
dil na lagaanaa meri jaan dil na lagaanaa
meri jaan dil na lagaanaa

in mast nazar waalon se aankhen na ladaanaa
in mast nazar waalon se aankhen na ladaanaa
aankhen na ladaanaa
dil na lagaanaa meri jaan dil na lagaanaa
meri jaan dil na lagaanaa

waadon ka bharosha nahin maashooq hain jhoothhe
waadon ka bharosha nahin maashooq hain jhoothhe
baaten hain bahut bholi magar dil ke hain khote
baaten hain bahut bholi magar dil ke hain khote
Kudrat ne sikhaaya hai inhein dil ka churaanaa
Kudrat ne sikhaaya hai inhein dil ka churaanaa
dil na lagaanaa meri jaan dil na lagaanaa
meri jaan dil na lagaanaa

phirte hain jo baazaaron mein ye chotiyaan daalen
phirte hain jo baazaaron mein ye chotiyaan daalen
zulfon ka faqat dhokhaa hai do naag hain paale
zulfon ka faqat dhokhaa hai do naag hain paale
dans jaayengi dekho kabhi nazdeek na jaanaa
dans jaayengi dekho kabhi nazdeek na jaanaa
dil na lagaanaa meri jaan dil na lagaanaa
meri jaan dil na lagaanaa
tum bhool ke phande mein haseenon ke na aanaa
tum bhool ke phande mein haseenon ke na aanaa
dil na lagaanaa meri jaan dil na lagaanaa
meri jaan dil na lagaanaa

Atul ji,

The person singing this song on screen is Yakub, the famous hero and then character actor of 40s and 50s. The person with umbrella seen briefly in the early part of the song is none other than character actor Kanhaiyyaa Lal.

The lead actors in this movie are Surendra and Noorjehaan.

Sudhir

This movie was produced and directed by K B LALL . And financed by RUPLAL MEHRA

A few songs sung by Chitalkar (C Ramchandra) for other MDs :

1. S D Burman : http://youtu.be/rq9olUuwQ-4
CR may have acceded to the request of his friend S D Burman and also the film’s director, P L Santoshi who was his buddy.
2. S D Burman :http://youtu.be/2yxxQatGX6E

3. Roshan : http://youtu.be/RGt8HU1fBZw

Word ‘surkhiyan’ needs to be replaced by ‘chotiyan’.
