Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Wo dekho dekh rahaa thhaa papeehaa

Posted on: March 10, 2011

“Fariyaad” (1964) is by now a forgotten movie. This movie had Ashok Sharma, Zeb Rehman,Nazima, Tuntun, Achla Sachdev etc. The movie was different from the usual mainstream Hindi movies and it fared badly at the box office.

Even the songs of this movie failed to get popular. It does not mean that the music was not good. It was, but the music failed to find favour with the public.

Here is a song from this movie that is truly rare, even by the standards of this movie. This song is a duet, sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Suman Kalyanpur. Only the audio is available, and I can guess that this song was picturised on Ashok Sharma and Zeb Rehman.

Kidar Sharma, who was the director of this movie, was also the lyricist for this movie, and indeed for this song. Music is composed by Snehal Bhatkar, another less known name among music directors.

ashok Sharma, hero of the movie ,was the son of Kidar Sharma, and this movie was an attempt to establish Ashok Sharma as a hero, after his maiden attempt as a hero in “Hamaari Yaad Aayegi” (1961) fell flat.

PS-I thank Arunkumar Deshmukh for the details about this movie.

Here is this forgotten and difficult to get gem from “Fariyaad” (1964).

Song-Wo dekho dekh rahaa thha papeehaa (Fariyaad) (1964) Singers- Mahendra Kapoor, Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics-Kidar Sharma, MD-Snehal Bhatkar

Lyrics

hahahahaha
wo dekho dekha dekh rahaa thhaa papeehaa
papeehaa dekho dekh rahaa thha papeehaa
papeehaa jaake sab se kahegaa papeehaa
papeehaa bhalaa chhup kyun rahegaa papeehaa
papeehaa dekho dekh rahaa thhaa

rim jhim jhim badariya barse
rim jhim jhim badariya barse
aise mein jal yoon nahin jharte
aise mein jal yoon nahin jharte
tum bin jiyaa ghabraaye
tum bin rahaa na jaaye
wo dekho dekha dekh rahaa thhaa papeehaa
papeehaa dekho dekh rahaa thha papeehaa
papeehaa jaake sab se kahegaa papeehaa
papeehaa bhalaa chhup kyun rahegaa papeehaa
papeehaa dekho dekh rahaa thhaa

sar sar sar chale sard hawaayen
sar sar sar chale sard hawaayen
phool hansen kaliyaan muskaayen
phool hansen kaliyaan muskaayen
hamko ye samjhaayen
ham mil kar naachen gaayen
wo dekho dekha dekh rahaa thhaa papeehaa
papeehaa dekho dekh rahaa thha papeehaa
papeehaa jaake sab se kahegaa papeehaa
papeehaa bhalaa chhup kyun rahegaa papeehaa
papeehaa dekho dekh rahaa thhaa

tim tim tim karte hain sitaare
tim tim tim karte hain sitaare
aap huye hain jab se hamaare
aap huye hain jab se hamaare
ham phhoole nahin samaaye
ham ghadi ghadi muskaayen
wo dekho dekha dekh rahaa thhaa papeehaa
papeehaa dekho dekh rahaa thha papeehaa
papeehaa jaake sab se kahegaa papeehaa
papeehaa bhalaa chhup kyun rahegaa papeehaa
papeehaa dekho dekh rahaa thhaa

hi atul
i remember having sen this movie ages ago during the time when only DOORDARSHAN used to show movies. i recollect that Kidar Sharma’s son made his debut in this movie. i think he is the same actor who was with tanuja in “Hamari Yaad Aayengi” and this song was picturised on this actor with the heroine whatever her name was.

Thanks for this information.

Atul ji,
Ashok kumar did not act in Fariyad.
The Hero’s name was Ashok Sharma, who was Kidar Sharma’s son.He was launched in Hamari Yaad Aayegi opposite Tanuja, younger sister of Nutan. The film and the Hero flopped miserably. However he tried his hand once again in Fariyad. After he was convinced that he was not Hero’s material he turned to technical departments.
He was restless and tried doing bit roles again in Aaj ki Awaaz(1984),Tawayaf(85),Parinda and Joshiley(89) and Bandit queen(94).
No one knows where he is today.
(Even otherwise, to imagine that in 1964 Ashok Kumar would sing a song like ‘Woh dekho dekh raha hai Papiha’,is very painful indeed !)

Thanks for this information. So this song was picturised on Ashok Sharma and Zeb Rehman ?

‘wo dekho dekha dekh rahaa thhaa papeehaa’, as soon as i saw the caption i remembered this song. I remember seeing it on T.V. many times but recently i had completely forgotten it. Mahendra Kapoor has carried the song very well. Another famous song from the same film is also very melodious “Haa-e-dil unko sunana tha” is already posted in the site.

There are two more duets which i was able to find while looking for the video of the above song. One song is Rafi-Mubarak begum and another is i think Rafi-SK. Both these songs i heard for the first time.

Atul ji,
Yes.Ashok Sharma and Zeb Rehman featured in this song.

Video clip of this song is available : http://youtu.be/m1m4TUlIqxI

All songs of this movie are melodious and worth remembering forever. I see all the songs of this movie atleast once a day on youtube. Such has been my fascination with the videos of these songs. The visual value was added by Zeb Rehman (don’t know whether she was a dancer) who emoted like a very good dancer. In fact, I observed that in those days even the extras had the capability to emote better than today’s top heroines. How we miss the melody of those times. The Golden Oldies.
