Be laus = Selfless, expecting nothing in return/no gain
is khaanah e hasti se guzar jaaungaa be-laus
saayaa hoon faqat naqsh ba-deewaar nahin hoon
meaning – The soul will pass through (life) this mortal body without gain. I am(the body) just a shadow, which leaves no impression(No. impact on the scheme of things, so as to say).
This ghazal was probabaly part of our school curriculam. We used to simply dread this exercise of “Shair ki tashreeh ”
Your efforts with these gazhals are also “be-laus”. Please accept my compliments and congatulations.

And also, thanks for the correct interpretation. I am reminded very strongly of the composition by Kabir Das, ‘Chadariyaa Jheeni Re Jheeni’. The last sentence in this poem is
“Daas Kabiraa, jatan se odhi
Jyun ki tyun dhar dini chadariyaa”
The sentiment is exactly the same as
“Is khaanah e hasti se guzar jaaungaa be-laus”

Nahm ji /Sudhir ji,
I am sorry to make a correction.
As far as I know the meaning of LAUS is contamination or pollution.
Thus belaus means without contamination or without any marks or ill effects.
Therefore the revised meaning will be(in my humble opinion),
‘ my soul will remain unaffected(with any worldly matters) when it leaves the mortal body.’
considering that this gazal espouses sufi philosophy,this meaning seems more appropriate.

You are right, Laus does mean contamination. But as far as i know the word “be laus” is used as “be-laus mohabbat”. I was trying to find another use of the word, but cannot recall any specific usage instance. Uncontaminated is unspoiled with worldly desires, also. Purity in any emotion is always selfless and without self interest. Any way the soul, ideally cannot get contaminated, especially in sufism.

I found that in the official site of K.L.Saigal,this song is attributed to poet AKBAR ALLAHABADI and NOT Seemaab Akbarabadi.

It was really enlightening to read everything about the Ghazal. The word BELAUS may also mean Selfless or Untainted. The probable meaning will, then, be : I will leave this world untainted ( Since I have remainedslfless )

Sameeb Akbarabadi’s Ghazal : Ab Kya bataoon maen tere Milne se Kya mila..Irfan e ghm hua mujhe dil ka pata mila” was sung by KL Saigal too. but this is not Seemab’s ghazal.

Be-lause means– unpoluted,unblemished. In Urdu “be daag “. In poem it means unattached. Shadow does not attach it self to wall, while drawing or other such Naqsh keep attach itself with wall. Poet says he led his life with no attachment with this world as does the shadow.

I have enjoyed the original translation as well as the discussion on be-laus. Very enlightening. Just a small comment/ correction. Harchand is usually translated as Halaanki (although). No sweat!

I would choose not to comment on the meaning or interpretation of the ghazal by Mr. Sudhir. I am not an expert on Urdu. I would only comment that it is one of the finest ghazals, out of many such, which comes direct from the heart of KLS.Every ghazal, every song he rendered it exactly and ably He vocalizes what the writer or shyar has in mind. He was great, a real genius. Eternally unforgettable.
I would also point this is not the only ghazal of ‘Seemeb’ Akbarabadi rendered by KLS.There are 7 more:- 1)Ab kya batau mai tere milne se kya mila 2)Ishque khud mile hizab hayat 3)ae bekhabari dil ko 4)Jalwa gaahe dil mein marte andhera ho gaya 5aag aur dekh zara 6)Baquadare shoukh ikarare wafa kya 7)Shukriya hasti ka lekin tumne ye kya kar diya. All are in my collection. I have a total collection of 172 songs of KLS including ghazals and those rendered in Bengali, Persian and Punjabi.Thanks.

Zindaa hoon magar zeest ki lazzat nahin baaqi
