Sun sun sun sun jaalimaa

on:“Aar Paar” (1954) was clearly a milestone in the annals of Hindi movies. The songs of this movie were quite different from the kinds of songs that the music lovers were used to. And all the songs of the movie became popular and remain popular to this day. In fact there are so many popular songs in this movie that it is easy to lose count of them.
Here is a song from “Aar Paar” (1954). This song has two versions. The faster version is a wooing teasing duet version sung by Rafi and Geeta Dutt and it is picturised on Guru Dutt and Shyama. The sad slower version is a Geeta Dutt solo and it is picturised on Shyama.
Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and O P Nayyar is the music director.
The lyrics of this song were sent to me by nahm.
I have noticed, and readers may have noticed too that I discuss multiple versions of a song in the same post as if they are one song. That is not how they are counted in real life though. For example, the two versions of the song under discussion here are obviously two different songs and they have always been counted as such by record companies. If one thinks back to all the multiple version songs discussed in the blog, I feel that we have in reality discusse far more number of songs than the number of posts in this blog. For instance, this is the 4368th post of the blog, but not really just the 4368th song as I was thinking all these days. The total count of songs in this blog could well be approaching 5000 by now. That way, we may have covered slightly more ground as far as Hindi movie songs were concerned.
Of course , we are still far off from discussing all the great songs that arerequired to be discussed. so we will be kept busy for a long long time and we will come across many well known, not so well known and even rarest of rare songs during our musical journey.
In the meanwhile, enjoy this timeless classic from “Aar Paar” (1954)- both versions of it.

sun sun sun sun zaalima
pyaar ham ko tum se ho gayaa
dil se mila le dil mera
tujh ko mere pyaar ki qasam
ja ja ja ja bewafa
kaisa pyaar kaisi preet re
tu na kisika meet re
jhooti tere pyaar ki qasam
sun sun sun sun zaalima
ja ja ja ja bewafa
pyaar ki nazar se door
yoon na zindagi guzaar
husn tu hai ishq main
kar bhi le nazar ko chaar
pyaar ki nazar se door
yun na zindagi guzar
husn tu hai ishq main
kar bhi le nazar ko chaar
chaar main nazar karoon
aur tum se
chaar main nazar karun
aur phir huzoor se
paas yoon na aayiye
baat keeje door se
ja ja ja ja bewafa
kaisa pyaar kaisi preet re
tu na kisika meet re
jhooti tere pyaar ki qasam
arre waah !
sun sun sun sun zaalima
ja ja ja ja bewafa
door kab talak rahoon
phool tu hai rang main
main to hoon tere liye
dor tu patang main
door kab talak rahoon
phool tu hai rang main
main to hoon tere liye
dor tu patang main
kat gayi patang ji
dorey ab na daaliye
kat gayi patang ji
dorey ab na daaliye
aur kisi ke saamne ja ke dil uchhaaliye
arrey sun sun sun sun zaalima
pyaar ham ko tum se ho gayaa
dil se mila le dil mera
tujh ko mere pyaar ki qasam
ja ja ja ja bewafa
sun sun sun sun zaalima
baat reh na jaaye phir
waqt ye guzar na jaaye
mere pyaar ka ye haar
toot kar bikhar na jaaye
arrey baat reh na jaaye phir
waqt ye guzar na jaaye
mere pyaar ka yeh haar
toot kar bikhar na jaaye
pyaar pyaar keh ke tu
dil mera na loot re
pyaar pyaar keh ke tu
dil mera na loot re
keh rahaa hai tu jo baat
ho na jhooth moothh re
ja ja ja ja bewafa
kaisa pyaar kaisi preet re
tu na kisika meet re
jhoothi tere pyaar ki qasam
sun sun sun sun zaalima
pyaar ham ko tum se ho gayaa
dil se mila le dil mera
tujh ko mere pyaar ki qasam
ja ja ja ja bewafa
sun sun sun sun zaalima
arrey ja ja ja ja
arrey sun sun sun sun
ja ja ja ja
sun sun sun sun

In the documentary ‘In search of Guru Dutt’, lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri has an interesting anecdote related to the song Sun sun sun Zalima…
Here is the excerpt where Majrooh says:
I can tell you about the way I worked. Usually the tune was composed first, and then given to me, so I could set the words on the tune. A tune has a meter and certain phonetics. So I had to see if my words respected the phonetics or not. I wrote a song in Aar Paar on an O.P. Nayyar saab tune that went like this:
Sun sun sun sun zaalima
Pyaar mujkho tujhse ho gaya
(Listen, O cruel one
I have fallen in love with you.)
Guru Dutt did not like the words “mujhko tujhse”. He thought the words were dry and were crushing the tune. So he wanted me to say, “Pyaar humko tumse ho gaya.” (We have fallen in love with you.) He said: “Try this, they’re easygoing notes.”
I explained that it was grammatically wrong. If we used the word ‘suno’ in the plural then using ‘hum ko’ would be correct. We were using ‘sun’ in the singular, so it should be ‘mujhko’. Guru Dutt looked at me and said: “Forget it! Who in the audience is bothered about your grammar? Majrooh, the plural sounds better. Keep it.” So that’s the song, and it was a big hit
