Janam se banjaaraa hoon bandhu

Posted on: September 21, 2011

“Raahgeer” (1969), also spelt “Rahgir” is a forgotten movie even though it is a “recent” movie by the standads of this blog. This movie was a Geetanjali Chitradeep production and it was directed by Tarun Majumdar. This movie had Biswjeet, Nirupa Roy, Asit sen,Sandhya Roy,Basantha/vasantha Chowdhury,Shashikala, Padma Chauhan,Anwar Hussain, Pahari Sanyal, Master Prasenjit,Ifthekar, Kanhaiyyalal etc in it.

I am really surprised that I had not heard of this movie in 1969 when I was growing up as a pre teen kid. I in fact do not even recall listening to the songs of this movie.

Here is a lovely philosophical song from this song. It is sung by Hemant Kumar. Gulzar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hemant Kumar.

Lyrics of this song and details of this movie were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Song-Janam se banjaara hoon bandhu (Raahgeer) (1969) Singer-Hemant Kumar, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-Hemant Kumar

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

Janam se banjaara hoon bandhu
janam janam banjaaraa
kahin koi ghar na ghaat na aangnaaraa
janam se banjaara hoon bandhu
janam janam banjaaraa
kahin koi ghar na ghaat na aangnaaraa
janam se banjaara hoon bandhu
janam janam banjaaraa
kahin koi ghar na ghaat na aanganaaraa
kahin koi ghar na ghaat na aanganaaraa

jahaan kahin thehar gaya dil
humne daale dhere
raat kahin namkeen milee to
meethe saanjh savere
Ho.o.ooo
jahaan kahin thehar gaya dil
humne daale dhere
raat kahin namkeen milee to
meethe saanjh savere
kabhi nagri chhodi
saahil chhodaa
liya majhdhaaraa
bandhu re…..e..e..e..e……………….
nagri chhodi Saahil chhodaa
liya majhdhaara Bandhu
kahin koi ghar na ghaat na aangnaaraa
janam se banjaara hoon bandhu
janam janam banjaaraa

o o o o
daal se udaaye
kabhi rishte thode naate tode
chhoda kul kinaaraa
bandhu re..e.e
rishte tode naate tode
chhoda kul kinaaraa bandhu
kahin koi ghar na ghaat na aangnaaraa
janam se banjaara hoon bandhu
janam janam banjaaraa
kahin koi ghar na ghaat na aangnaaraa
kahin koi ghar na ghaat na aangnaaraa
O o o o

I have heard somewhere in radio interview, Biswajeet told to the effect that it is his home production. And he was projected in the movie with black and deglamourised makeup agianst his usual dapper and suave onscreen image.
Further he told the movie won one award for it., but award for which department he didn`t mentioned. Master Prasenjit`s name(, who is the son of Bishwajeet)is there in the starcast of the above movie.

But I do have my own doubt about above fact, because
Geethanjali pictures(this movie`s production house name is “Geethanjali chitradeep) is the name of Hemant kumar`s(singer and music director) home production banner which produced Khamoshi(1969), Kohra(1964), Bees saal baad(1962),
Biwi aur makan(1966)Faraar(1965).Further there is another similar fact is Biswajeet starred in all the above movies produced by Hemant kumar except Khamoshi and Faraar.

Arunji may know more about this.

Atul ji,
First of all, this is a production of GITANJALI CHITRADEEP,CALCUTTA.
The name of Hemant kumar’s production house was GEETANJALI PICTURES,BOMBAY.So,there is every possibility that this may be a home production,in some way or the other,of Bishwajeet.
I remember having seen this film halfway,in the theatre,as it was very much boring.
Directed by Tarun Mujumdar,its cast was,Bishwajeet,Sandhya Roy,Shashikala,Padma,Nirupa Roy,Kanhaiyalal,Anwar hussain,Pahadi Sanyal,Prasanjit,Iftekhar, Asit sen,sabita chaterjee etc.
The story,as I remember, was of a young man who is fond of wandering and sets out on an endless journey. The film depicts various experiences he encounters in his travels. He does not get attached to anybody, but becomes a darling of many.
Neither the story, nor the music ,nor the actors were of much interest and hence no wonder the film wandered aimlessly in seach of success.

NB- There seems to be no record of any major award given to Rahgir.May be,Bengal Govt. or critics or journalists award may have been given to it.

I feel that Gitanjali Chitradeep Productions belonged to Hemant Kumar. Biswajeet had produced and directed Hindi Film KEHATE HAIN MUJKO RAJA (1975) and I did n’t find any mention of Gitanjali Chitradeep Productions about this film in a couple of websites I browsed.

RAAHGEER was a remake of Bengali film PALATAK (1963) directed by Tarun Majumdar. It was a great hit.

I had heard this song many times but did not know that it was from Raahgeer. I get a feel of a typical bhatiyali folk tune(boatman’s songs) from this song.

Thanks Atul ji, Prakash ji for this song – one of my favorites and a philosophical motivational song !
All songs of this film are lyrics by Gulzar ! ,tumhare nain dekhke log jogi hog gaye, is another one which i have in my collection. other songs are not much heard but today i discovered two ‘panchhi songs’ from this movie out of which one i am sending to Atul ji ! the story as mentioned by Deshmukh sir is about ‘journey’ and i think more likely taken from as the birds travel all over …

I had seen this movie on Doordarshan back in end-70s or early 80s. I’d term it as a classic, in which for the first time Biswajit acted really well. Hemant Kumar’s music was great and couple of songs absolutely outstanding. This movie did not work because it was against the trend of 70s cinema – this was set to 50s- early60s style. Also, Black and White Cinema was almost passe by that time.

Rahgir 1969 was remake of Bengali film Palatak ( The fugitive ) 1963 . Palatak 1963 had Anoop Kumar ( not the sibling of Kishore Kumar ) in the male lead role . Sandhya Roy is the lead actress in both Rahgir and Palatak . Palatak 1963 was directed by Tarun Majumdar ( real life husband of Sandhya Roy ) .
Anoop Kumar’s acting was greatly appreciated by the cine goers . Hemanta Mukherjee gave musc in both the versions .
This song is lifted from ” Jibonpurer Pathik Re Bhaai ” ( both the tune and lyrics ) from Palatak 1963 . In Bengali version lyricist is Mukul Dutta while Gulzar is the lyricist of the Hindu version .
