Aa aa bhi jaa raat dhalne lagi

on:This is one of those songs that everyone is familiar with whether or not one is familiar with the details of the song. I too have heard this song countless times without being very sure which movie this song was from.
And I thought that this song, being this well known, must surely have been posted in this blog by now.
But I realised that this song was still missing from the blog.
This happens when a movie is teeming with great songs and one has discussed several of them. As it is, this song is from “Teesri Kasam” (1966) and after discussing as many as five songs from this movie, one may tend to think that all the well known songs of this movie have been covered.
But that is obviously not the case with musical blockbusters like “Teesri Kasam” (1966).
Here is this wonderful song from “Teesri Kasam”. The song is sung by Lata and it is picturised as a stage dance song on Waheeda Rehman.
Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by nahm.
On the occasion of Lata’s 83rd birthday, we in this blog wish her a happy birthday and many happy returns of the day.
PS-It turns out that the audio version of the song has an additional stanza, which is missing in the video version. Now the audio link as will as the additional lyrics`too have been included. I thank Prakashchandra and nahm for the additional lyrics and the audio link, respectively.

Song-Aa bhi jaa raat dhalne lagi chaand chhupne lagaa (Teesri Kasam) (1966) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
Rahega ishq tera khaak me mila ke mujhe
huye hain ibtedaa mein ranj inteha ke mujhe
aaa aaa aaa
aa aa bhi jaa
raat dhalne lagi
chaand chhupne chala
aa
aa bhi jaa
raat dhalne lagi
ho o
chaand chhupne chala
ho
aa
aa bhi jaa
teri yaad mein bekhabar
shama ki tarah raat bhar
teri yaad mein bekhabar
shama ki tarah raat bhar
jali aarzoo dil jalaa
aa
aa bhi jaa
raat dhalne lagi
chaand chhupne chala
aa
aa bhi jaa
raat dhalne lagi
chaand chhupne chala
ho
aa
aa bhi jaa
sitaaron ne munh pherkar
kaha alvida humsafar
sitaaron ne munh pherkar
kaha alvida humsafar
chala kaarwaan ab chalaa
aa
aa bhi jaa
raat dhalne lagi
ho
chaand chhupne chala
ho
aa aa bhi jaa
raat dhalne lagi
ho
chaand chhupne chala
ho
aa
aa bhi jaa
oofaq par khadi hai sehar
andhera hai dil mein idhar
oofaq par khadi hai sehar
ho
andhera hain dil mein idhar
wahi roz ka silsila
aa
aa bhi jaa
raat dhalne lagi
chaand chhupne chala
aa
aa bhi jaa
raat dhalne lagi
ho
chaand chhupne chala
ho
aa
aa bhi jaa

Arun,
Thanks for including this song in your blog. There are still two more songs from this film to be included in the blog. They are :
Lali lali doliya mein aayee hain dulaniya
Mare gaye gulfam hanji han
TEESRI KASAM (1966) was based on Hindi novelist Fanishwar Nath Renu’s short story ‘Mare Gaye Gulfam’.

The following words need correction :
Rahega ishq tera khaak me mila ke mujhe
huye hain ‘ibtedaa’ mein ranj ‘inteha’ ke mujhe

Thanks Prakashchandra ji. I was not aware of the middle stanza. It is such a beautiful song, the more the better, always.

Aaa aaa aaa bhi jaa – teesri qasam
translation :
My devotion to you, is likely to lead me to utter ruin
As I bled to death in the beginning.
Do come,
Before this night is over
And the moon is invisible
I melt nightlong, as a candle,
Burning in the flames, oblivious of everything
As do my heartfelt desires.
The stars said goodbye
and went their way
Let my caravan go its way
A new dawn in sight
The darkness in my heart is here to stay
Days turn into night and vice versa

Nahm ji,
Re the translation of
Rahega ishq tera khaak me mila ke mujhe
huye hain ibtedaa mein ranj inteha ke mujhe
I am not sure the second line would literally tranlate to “As I bled to death in the beginning”.
In the second line, the play is on the words “ibtedaa” (meaning the beginning) and “intehaa” (the literal meaning is “the end”, but the poetical use and interpreation is more in terms of “to the utmost extreme”). The word ‘ranj’ translates to “grief, sorrow, affliction”. So my interpreation of the second line would be, “that it is just the beginning itself (of my love for you), and I already suffer extreme anguish”.
This verse is a sort of build up on the famous she’r, “ibtedaa e ishq hai rota hai kya, aage aage dekhiye hota hai kya”. And the answer is the second line of the this verse that says “huye hain ibtedaa mein ranj inteha ke mujhe”.

Sir,
This is the first time i have tried this sort of translation of poetry into poetry. I dont know how peotic they are because there is no rhyming.
Now ‘ Huey hain ibtedaa mein ranj intehaa ke mujhe ” , literally does not meant “As i bleed to death………….. ” , but that is the “intehaa” or beyond limit proportions of extreme anguish, which led me to the death part. Here death is inner(spirit, soul) rather than physical.
Even then, truly i was not too happy with this particular conclusion which is extreme, and exaggerating like it is usual in urdu shayari.
Let me change it as follows :
My devotion to you, is likely to lead me to utter ruin
since the beginning, my anguish is beyond bearable
I was rather happy with the other four translations namely “Mujhe tumse bahut hai pyaar” ” Pipra ke patwaa sareekhe doley manwaa” ” Akela hoon main hamsafar dhoondhtaa hoon “, and of course ” Jawaan hai mohabbat ” . I request you to take a close look at the first three too, so if there is any improvement required, we can change them.
Thanks and regards.

Lyrics of missing stanza:
“Sitaaron ne munh pherkar

Sitaaron ne munh pherkar
kaha alvida humsafar
chala kaarwaan ab chalaa
