Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ae ishq mujhe aur to kuchh yaad nahin hai

Posted on: October 15, 2011

“Dana Pani” (1953) is a sunrise pictures production. it was directed by V M Vyas and the movie had actors like Wasti,Meena Kumari, Shashi Kapoor (?), Weera, Chhagan, Romeo, Radha Krishnan, Chitra etc in it, according to what I have been able to gather.

Today, I read in a weekly Hindi music column (Swar Panchami in Hindi newspaper “Dainik Bhaskar”) that Begam Akhtar (legendary ghazal/thumri singer) had sung a song for Madan Mohan in “Dana Pani” (1953). This aroused my curiousity and I searched for this elusive song of “Dana Pani”. Having located that, when I looked for details, I found that this movie did not have music by Madan Mohan, but by another music director who is now known as Madan Junior. Of course there are sources that attribute the music direction of this movie to Madan Mohan, though Madan Mohan’s official site itself does not list “Dana Pani” (1953) as among the list of movies with music by him.

That confusion aside, this song is a superb song to listen to. Here is this fantastic song which is sung by Begam Akhtar. Kaif Irfani is the lyricist. Music is composed by Madan Junior.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its music director. Also, I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us whether this song is a ghazal, or a thumri, or some other form of singing.

I am no expert on classical/traditional music. This song starts with a slow tempo but since it ends abruptly, it is difficult to gauge the full feel of the song. But after hearing many Begam Akhtar classical songs, my guess is that it is of Khayal type.

Sadanand ji, Atul ji,

This is a ghazal, which is rendered in a classical mode by Begum Akhtar, as she has rendered many other ghazals so wonderfully. Structure of the verses, and its rendition, one verse by one verse, definitely indicates this to be a ghazal.

Yes, it does end abruptly, yet it has such a soulful character, and with the voice of Begum Akhtar, it is really a special experience.

This is a wonderful ghazal. This appears to be the only time Begum Akhtar sang for a film. Someone had told me that she did not sing film songs.

She was persuaded to sing in movies by Madan Mohan in one more movie, viz Ehsaan (1954). I will discuss that song (Hamen dil mein basaa bhi lo) also , after I am able to locate that song.

Begam Akhtar, who acted as the heroine in “Roti”(1942) also acted in Satyajit Ray’s Bangla movie called “Jalsaghar”, where she plays a Ghazal singer and sings a ghazal. The movie is in Bangla but this ghazal is in Hindi/Urdu,so this is another instance of Begam Akhtar singing a ghazal in a movie.

Atul ji,
As far as I know, she did not sing for Jalsaghar, but a Gazal already sung by her earlier was used.

Thanks for this information. I have seen the clip of ghazal in “Jalsaghar” where she plays a ghazal singer called Durga Bai. The video clip ends abruptly, so if this is a song that was also sung earlier, then we will be able to locate the full version of it elsewhere.

Thanks a lot for this invaluable and rare information. So it means that Madan Mohan has two more movies to his credit than is normally believed.

Atul ji,
DANA PANI(1953),a sunrise pictures film, was based on a tear jerker story by the famous and popular Marathi Dramatist Vasant Kanetkar. He also gave the s/play.Actually Vasant Kanetkar’s farcical and humourous dramas were very popular and he was not known for such tearful plots.
Anyway, the story is about the limitations, miseries and sufferings of the lower middle class of india.
Shanker(Bh.Bhushan),his wife Uma(M.Kumari),their small son Deepak(shashi kapoor as a child artist),step brother Kishen(M.Musharraf),step sister Shashi(Chitra) and step mother Badi maa(Gauhar) are the central characters. An ill paid teacher-Shankar spends all the money(Rs.2000) kept by his father for Shashi’s marriage on his family needs. He can not provide a Tricycle to his son,can not marry his step sister, who causes further complications by loving and getting pregnant from a greedy lawyer’s son, refusing to compromise on honesty, Shankar invites further trouble etc etc.
After about the interval the viewer gets so much frustrated with so many disasters and the never ending difficulties, one shuts his mind to the ongoings on the screen, till almost the last reel,by which time the high ideals and good principals of life have a forced but weak victory and a good end is somehow managed. It is all so ,unconvincing that one starts wondering whether,in one’s life it is wise to have high principles if you have to wait till the end to uphold them at all !

Deshmukh Sir & Atul ji,

Thanks for the details on Begum Akhtar.

I know that Begum Akhtar is famous for non-filmi ghazals and thumris. If she was singing for films, i thought i would find something in the thumris of Pakeeza, which are available on youtube. But i was not able to find any rendered by Begum Akhtar. It would be nice to see her film appearances if any clips are available.

I am also looking forward to the ghazal in ‘jalsaghar’.

Nahm ji,

I would like to draw your attention to the song “Meghraaj Meghraaj” from the film Roti (1942) already posted in this blog at https://atulsongaday.wordpress.com/2011/05/07/meghraaj-meghraaj/.

The lead singers on screen are Sheikh Mukhtar and Sitara Devi. In this clip, one can also see actor Chandramohan, and a very young Akhtari Faizabadi aka Begum Akhtar.

If it is possible to get hold the DVD/VCD of this film which is now available in the market, you should see it. Akhtari Faizabadi plays the role of ‘Darling’.

Thanks and regards.

Atul ji,
The HFGK mentions name of MOHAN JUNIOR as MD of film Dana Pani-53 and a footnote says,as per info given by Begum Akhtar ,Madan mohan had given the music.
I have quoted all this above and it was accepted too. However there is a twist here now.
Few days back I got a query from shri GIRDHARILAL VISHWAKARMA,the noted Old film expert, collector of old songs and a person whose exclusive old songs are posted in hundreds on Surjit Singh ji’s site.he is based in Rajasthan.
He asked me if I can provide some info about Mohan Junior,MD of Dana pani and Ajamil-1948.he claimed that he is a different person and NOT Madan Mohan.
After his query,I started working on it.I contacted Sanjeev Kohli(Son of Madan Mohan) and Sageeta Gupta(Daughter of Madan Mohan).I was told that they were not sure and it was possible that he may be a different person and that is the reason Dana pani was NOT included in Madan Mohan’s list of films. In my search I learnt that he was a Gujrati person. So after going thru the Gujrati film data I found one more film BHAKTA PURAN-1949 in which Mohan Junior had given music.
Girdharilal ji contacted shri HARISH RAGHUVANSHI,and he confirmed that Mohan Junior was a Gujarati Music Director.
Then I got an idea.
Madhubala Jhaveri had also sung in Dana Pani,so I requested Girdharilal ji to contact her.He immediately contacted her on Telephone and on phone Madhubala Jhaveri confirmed 100% that Mohan Junior was a Gujarati Composer and he had given music to Dana Pani and NOT Madan Mohan.
So now it is confirmed that Mohan junior was the Music Director of Dana pani and Ajamil.
Two questions remained-
1.Why did Begum Akhtar say that Madan Mohan gave music. The answer to that is-she was right, that Gazal was composed by Madan mohan and it was used in the film.It was concluded therefore that the entire film music was given by MM.I think HFGK went overboard in this.
2.Why that composer called himself Junior, because in 48,and 49 MM was not a composer as yet.
I found out that during that period there was yet another Mohan-a Mohan Sharma,a Music director for JaiHind-1949(unreleased) and Chocolate-1950.
May be to distinguish himself,he called himself as Mohan Junior.
Sanjeev Kohli ji has also now agreed that he must be a different person. However Sanjeev ji has requested me NOT to quote his name elsewhere in this connection.,as he does not want any controvercy now.
so let us keep him out of this.

Fantastic research ! This certainly means that we need to revise some of the earlier writing on some songs.
