Aaj to meri hansi udaayi

“Gomti Ke Kinaare” (1972), despite being a recent movie by the standards of this blog is a forgotten movie. this movie was produced and directed by Saawan Kumar Tak, who would later on specialise in making movies on the themes of Saajan and Sautan.
This movie had actors like Meena Kumari, Mumtaz, Jalal Agha, Helen, Sameer, Mukri, Agha, Paintal, Asit Sen, shyma, Chandrima Bhaduri, Tuntun, Daisy Irani, Manorama, Rehman, I. S. Johar etc in it. This movie was released in november 1972, viz six months after the release of “Paakeezah”(1972). Thus it is “Gomti Ke Kinaare” (1972) which is the last released movie of Meena Kumari and not “Paakeezah” (1972) as popularly believed. This movie, unlike “Paakeezah” (1972), flopped at the box office.
I have discussed one song from this movie in the past. Here is another song from this movie. It is a mujra song, which is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Meena Kumari.
Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman. this must be one of the rare mujra songs composed by R D Burman.
It is so heartening to find that this blog is getting several contributors these days. Mrs Bhatt, a new contributor, has sent the lyrics of this song. I welcome her aboard the bandwagon of contributors. Thanks Peevesie’s Mom ji for the info on Manoroma. I never knew so much about her. What she said about some kind of fund for these our Golden Era actors was true. So many of our actors from that period had misserable last years of their life. I saw her last movie- “Water” by Deepa Mehta.

R. D. Burman got very few chances to mujra/kotha type song. He had the other club/dance type song in its place. This particular song if heard, is not at all mujra like composition. ‘Raina beet jaaye” from Amar Prem and the mujra on Reena Roy in ‘Rocky” are a lot better.
