4th january is the day when R D Burman left for the heavenly abode at quite a young age of 54. He was easily the most influential music director of my formative age, viz 1970s. R D Burman as the music director, Kishor Kumar as the male playback singer and Rajesh Khanna as the male superstar arrived at the scene almost simultaneously and they all left their indelible mark of Hindi movie industry.
On the occasion of R D Burman’s death anniversary, here is a song that brings the three geniuses together. This song is sung by Kishore Kumar, it is picturised on Rajesh Khanna and it is composed by R D Burman.
Anand Bakshi is the lyricist.
The movie is “Namak Haraam” (1973), which incidentally also featured Amitabh Bachchan, who would soon take over the mantle of superstar from Rajesh Khanna.
The magic of R D Burman is for all to see and listen in this memorable composition. It is curious to realise that I used to regard this song as one of the lesser compositions of R D Burman those days, but I have obviously been proved wrong with time. The song has grown upon with passage of time.
The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)
diye jaltey hain
phool khiltey hain
diye jaltey hain
phool khiltey hain
badi mushqil se magar
duniya mein dost miltey hain
diye jaltey hain
jab jis waqt kisi ka
yaar juda hota hai
kuchh na poochho yaaron dil ka
haal bura hota hai
jab jis waqt kisi ka
yaar juda hota hai
kuchh na poochho yaaron dil ka
haal bura hota hai
dil pe yaadon ke jaise
teer chaltey hain
haan haan haan
diye jaltey hain
phool khiltey hain
diye jaltey hain
is rang-roop pe dekho
hargiz naaz na karna
jaan bhi maange yaar to de dena
naraaz na karna
rang ud jaate hain
dhoop dhalte hain
hmm hmm hmm
diye jaltey hain
phool khiltey hain
diye jaltey hain
daulat aur jawaani
ek din kho jaati hai
sach kehta hoon saari duniya
dushman ho jaati hai
daulat aur jawaani
ek din kho jaati hai
sach kehta hoon saari duniya
dushman ho jaa ti hai
uma bhar dost lekin
saath chalte hain
hmm hmm hmm
diye jalte hain
phool khilte hain
badi mushqil se magar
duniya mein dost miltey hain
diye jaltey hain

I saw this film during the first week of its release. At that time, I felt that this song was unnecessarily slowing down the tempo of the film. But listening to this song after many years, I now feel that it is a great composition. The song looks simple but it is one of difficult renditions.

With this video link, some additions in lyrics in terms of repeat verses are necessary. In the last stanza ( 9th line), it is ‘umra’ . Surely it is one of those typo mistake.

This is a karaoke sung by someone else. Niether it is the original voice nor the original video. It is a built from original footage with cut and paste with many repeats.

When I watched this movie first time on Doordarshan during my preteens age, I did not appreciate this song that much, but loved the song “main shaayar badanaam” which amused my brother just considering the age and the former being more happier than the later one. But after “growing up” I appreciated this song more (but still love “main shayar badanaam”).
