January 9th is the birth anniversary of Mahendra Kapoor and the death anniversary of Qamar Jalalabadi ( Om Prakash Bhandari). Qamar Jalalabadi had been writing songs for Hindi films since 1942. Who can forget “sun mere saajnaa” , an immortal song written by him in film AANSOO (1949) among many of his songs. The very fact that he had worked with almost all prominent music directors of his time is a testimony not only of his calibre as a lyricist but also of his pliable nature.
Mahendra Kapoor started the playback singing career with his first song for NAVRANG (1959) when there were already well established male singers – Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey. But he created a niche for himself in playback singing with his unique style of rendition. The hight point of his playback singing (literally as well as figuratively) was “mere desh ki dharti sona ugle” from UPKAR (1972) among many other songs. Who can forget the title song of TV serial MAHABARAT, sung by him.
Since both of them had worked with Kalyanji-Anandji and O P Nayyar in a number of films, I was scouting for a song, to begin with, within this range written by Qamar Jalalabadi and sung by Mahendra Kapoor. It was a pleasant surprise for me when I came across this song “jigar mein dard kaisa isko ulfat to nahin kehte ” wriiten by Qamar Jalalabadi and sung by Mahendra Kapoor- Kamal Barot from film “Apna Ghar Apni Kahaani” (1968). [Earlier this film’s title was PYAAS].
The song, set to music by N Dutta, is picturised on Sudheer and Mumtaz. The song is melodious and foot tapping one and I am listening to this song after decades. One song from this film has already been discussed.
Although Kamal Barot has only two lines in each stanza to sing, her unique voice adds charm to the song.
Song-Jigar mein dard kaisa isko ulfat to nahin kehte (Apna Ghar Apni Kahaani)(1968) Singers-Mahendra Kapoor, Kamal Barot, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-N Datta
Lyrics
hmm hmm hmm
lara la aa aa
jigar mein dard kaisa
isko ulfat to nahin kehte
mujhe dar hai kahin isko
muhabbat to nahin kehte
shaayad ye pyaar hai
kyaa
haan haan ye pyaar hai
jigar mein dard kaisa
isko ulfat to nahin kehte
mujhe dar hai kahin isko
muhabbat to nahin kehte
shaayad ye pyaar hai
kyaa
haan haan ye pyaar hai
le aayee kis jagah meri
deewaangee mujhe
kisne jahaan-e-husn se
aawaaz di mujhe
phoolon mein chhup ke aayee hai
dulhan bahaar ki
ee
ya aasmaan se aayee hai
devi ye pyaar ki
jigar mein dard kaisa
isko ulfat to nahin kehte
mujhe darr hai kahin isko
muhabbat to nahin kehte
shaayad ye pyaar hai
kyaa
haan haan ye pyaar hai
itni haseen kabhi na
meri kaaynaat thhi
pehle bhi raat thi magar
aisi na raat thi
doobi na thhi nazar kabhi
aise suroor mein
ye baat to nahin thhi
sitaaron ki noor mein
jigar mein dard kaisa
isko ulfat to nahin kehte
mujhe darr hai kahin isko
muhabbat to nahin kehte
shaayad ye pyaar hai
kyaa
haan haan ye pyaar hai

APNA GHAR APNI KAHANI-1968 was a Rachana film production, directed by Phani Muzumdar.
The cast was Shekhar,Buna Rai,Sudhir,Mumtaz,keshto Mukherjee,baby Farida,Madhumati,David etc.
Earlier, this film was titled PYAAS and songs were recorded under this name, but at the time of release the name of Apna ghar apni kahani was taken.
A happily married man Amar(Shekhar) gets addicted to drinking and loses all his money. His wife Meera(Bina Rai) sells her jewellery also. One day,in a drunken state,Amar throws wife Meera and daughter Sudha(Baby Farida) out of the house and puts fire to his own Timber factory.
Meera decides ti raise Sudha on her own .She is given help and shelter by a good samaritan Baba Kaka(David) in his house.Sudha and her neighbour Manohar play together.
In due course,Manohar(Sudhir) and Sudha(Mumtaz) grow up as adults and fall in love.Manohar gets a job as Astt.Manager in a big company. He arranges Sudha’s job also as Pvt.Secretary to his owner Thakur Saheb.
manohar’s father, however, refuses his marriage to Sudha-a girl who does not know her father’s name also.
The story takes many turns here till Sudha and Meera accidently confront Amar-Sudha’s father. After few misunderstandings, confusions and 3-4-reels,all meet together and its a happy ending.
This was Keshto mukherjees first major role as a drunkard who spoils Amar-a role which stuck to him till the end and also made him famous.
