Saara mora kajraa chhudaaya toone

Posted on: January 19, 2012

Today (19 january) is the date of birth of Kaifi Azmi. To many music lovers of younger generations, he may be a lesser known name, and even to me, he was a “boring” lyricist when I was growing up. Having grown up (hopefully) 🙂 I have come to appreciate Kaifi Azmi better. We have over one hundred Kaifi Azmi songs in this blog and that speaks volumes about the fact that Kaifi Azmi was one of the major contributors in making the Golden era of Hindi movie music what it was, viz a memorable era for music lovers.

On the occasion of Kaifi Azmi’s birthday, here is a duet from “Do Dil” (1965). This song is sung by Aarti Mukherji and Rafi. The song is picturised on Rajshree and Vishwajeet. Kaifi Azmi’s lyrics have been set to tune by Hemant Kumar.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

saraa moraa kajraa
chhudaayaa toone
garwaa se kaise
lagaayaa toone
saraa moraa kajraa
chhudaayaa toone
garwaa se kaise
lagaayaa toone
o rasiyaa… man basiyaa…aaa
teekha teekha kajraa
lagaayaa toone
kaahe ko jaadoo
jagaayaa toone
o sajni
sukh rajni

saraa moraa kajraa
chhudaayaa toone
garwaa se kaise
lagaayaa toone

o rasiyaa
aa
man basiya
toone pyaas jagaa di
nayee aag lagaa di
meraa ang ang jalaa jaaye
o sajni
sukh rajni
zaraa nain mila le
lagi dil ki bujhaa le
tere sang sang koi aaye
teraa roop sahaa nahin jaaye

saraa moraa kajraa
chhudaayaa toone
garwaa se kaise
lagaayaa toone

kahe saaraa zamaanaa
mujhe teraa deewanaa
sadaa haar haar
tujhe chaahoon

meri preet puraani
huyee teri deewaani
jiyaa baar baar tujhe chaahoon
tere gham mein ?? mujhe aaye
teekha teekha kajraa lagaayaa toone
kaahe ko jaadoo jagaayaa toone

o rasiyaa
man basiya
mere nain nasheele
mere honth raseele
jiyaa jhoom jhoom
meraa gaaye
o sajni
sukh rajni
ye phizaa bhi sharaabi
ye hawa bhi sharaabi
tujhe choom choom idhar aaye
mujhe door kahin liye jaaye

saraa moraa kajraa chhudaayaa toone
garwaa se kaise lagaayaa toone
ho
teekha teekha kajraa lagaayaa toone
kaahe ko jaadoo jagaayaa toone
o sajni
sukh rajni

o rasiyaa
manbasiyaa
o sajni
sukh rajni

o rasiyaa
man basiyaa

Atul ji,
DO DIL-1965 was a Uttam chitra film, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
The dying king announces that the son of his banished daughter(because she had married a commoner) may be traced and made the kinf.If not, then his nephew Pratap singh(Pran) may be made the king.
Unfortunately for Pratap singh, the real claimant,Man singh(Biswajit),who was raised by an ordinary citizen, is discovered and the Raanima(Durga Khote) starts training man sing in the Roayal ways.
Once Mansingh goes for hunting and falls in love with Bijlee(Rajashri),the daughter of a tribal chief who is a diehard enemy of the kingdom.
Pratap sing takes this opportunity and exposes Mansing’s love in front of Ranima. She is very angry and gives 2 alternatives to Mansingh, either leave Bijlee or leave Kingdom.
Asexpected by all the public in the theatre,Mansing chooses true love,Bijlee and starts to leave kingdom.Impressed with their true love, both Rani ma and Tribal chief(Kamal kapoor) decide to take this opportunity of a flimsy excuse to stop being enemies for life.
Obviously everybody, except Pratap singh(Pran),on the screen and in the theatre is happy(that the film ended.).

‘Do Dil’ was a mediocre movie but it had some fantastic songs. THis duet is superb. Another lovely number is ‘Pyasi hirani bandhan bhaye, koi shikari aaye re…’ sung so beautifully by Lata….

If I am not wrong that’s the only movie where Rafi play backed for Hemant Kumar.

No, there are a few more movies. I can think of atleast one more ‘Biwi aur makaan’ 1966. There are many songs by Rafi sahab in this film.

Filling in the missing word with meaning…

is actually

nazaa.a written as नज़ाअ’, that is: نزاع
means throes — the pain of death

Yes Sir, the word appears to be “nazaa’a” . Trust Kaifi Azmi to use a word like this in a song like this to take the meaning to the extreme.
