Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Main hoon badnaam juaari

Posted on: May 21, 2012

In the past, I have discussed some of the practical challenges that I face while discussing songs in the blog on a regular basis. Some of the obvious challenges that one faces are official job, or personal works. For instance, if I am on journey or meetings or any other reasons that does not allow me to devote as much time on the blog then my output for those days become low. Likewise, when personal reasons beckon, then also I am unable to devote time to blogging. I have learnt to maintain my normal output on the face of usual official and/or personal commitments.

Then there are some different kinds of challenges, that I call infrastructural challenges. Suppose I have no access to internet of desired speed, then also my output suffers. And sometimes, my computer itself may have some problems. I have gained enough experience in these areas and I overcome these obstacles by having spare capacities/ backups. I have more than one internet connection, computer etc, so if one of my connections/ computers become unavailable, I nonchalantly switch over to another one and continue as if nothing has happened.

But right now, I am facing a challenge that does not fall under any of the above mentioned categories. It is a unique challenge and some people may find it amusing as well.

I have been a computer user for nearly two decades and I have owned computers for nearly 15 years. And I have been a heavy user of computers all these years. I would stare at the computer screen for hours and hours together. There were people (like my wife for instance) who would advise me against staring at the screen for too long (and also reading books for too long) saying that it would affect my eyesight. and I would laugh it off, pointing it out that eyesight had nothing to do with spending more time on computers or books. She hardly spent much time with computers or books but she still needed to wear glasses for these activities, while I did not need glasses.

I was overconfident, and I kept on staring at the computer screen/ reading books. It was nearly one year ago, when I finally began to feel that my eyesight was weakening. I tried to manage without spectacles. Finally, a stage came when I realised that I needed spectacles for these activities. In the beginning it was just a case of being unable to read the smaller print, and later I found that words began to appear blurred. In other words, age, coupled with my abuse of te eyes had caught up with me.

For the last one year or so, I have been using spectacles while staring at the computer or reading books. Being a nostalgia loving individual that I aam, I fondly look back to those days not very long ago when I could read even the fine prints without any difficulty and I was able to make out the letters on the computer screen. These days even bigger letters appear blurred to me when I look at them with naked eyes.

So how is this affecting my blogging ? Just wear the spectacles and be done with it, one would say. Yes, that is true. But suppose the glasses play truant like internet, for instance. Glasses can break, or can be lost, or sometimes I may just forget to bring them with me. And that is exactly what has happened with me right now. I have the time and inclination to blog, and I have the internet connection(the backup one) available with me, but I am handicapped by my inability to see properly :). Yes, I have forgotten my glasses at home.

I have only discussed three songs for the day which is unacceptably low for the blog and I need to make the most of the afternoon to discuss the remaining songs of the day, but this unexpected challenge is coming in my way.

So how did I manage ? I could not just look at some lyrics sent by my contributors because I am unable to read their contents, and worse, I may not even know who those contributors may be. So I needed to post a song of my own. The challenge is to discuss a song that has not yet been discussed and it is preferably from 1960s. With some difficulty, I have managed to locate a song from “Juaari” (1968).

This song is sung by Mukesh. I know it is Mukesh, because I have heard it with my ears and they have not aged unlike my eyes.:) But watching the video and identifying the lip syncer was a challenge. The actor looked liked Shashi Kapoor so I am gong by my hunch. I request knowledgeable readers with beetter eyesight (or those who have not forgotten their glasses home) to confirm/ refute my identification. I never thought that a day would come when I would struggle to identify Shashi Kapoor. 😉

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

So I have been able to post this writeup almost by groping at the keyboard. Waah ! that certainly feels like an achievement.

I will be unable to thank my readers for their appreciation immediately though 🙂 . For that they will have to wait when I go home and locate my specs and look at the computer (the family permitting of course :)).

Song-Main hoon badnaam juaari (Juaari)(1968) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

Main hoon badnaam juaari
main hoon naakaam juaari
main hoon badnaam juaari
main hoon naakaam juaari
har daaon zamaana jeeta
har baazi maine haari
main hoon badnaam juaari
main hoon naakaam juaari

ae dost ye jaan le tu bhi
jo kuchh maine jaana hai
ae dost ye jaan le tu bhi
jo kuchh maine jaana hai
ye zindagi ek jua hai
ye duniyaa juaa khaana hai
ye to hai juaa
ye kiska huaa
jo karga tujhe yaari
main hoon badnaam juaari
main hoon naakaam juaari
har daaon zamaana jeeta
har baazi maine haari
main hoon badnaam juaari
main hoon naakaam juaari

main jeet saka na tumko
is baat ka itna gham hai
main jeet saka na tumko
is baat ka itna gham hai
is gham se agar ghabra ke
mar jaaun bhi main to kam hai
main shaam o sahar roya hoon magar
bujhti nahin ye chimngaari
main hoon badnaam juaari
main hoon naakaam juaari
har daaon zamaana jeeta
har baazi maine haari
main hoon badnaam juaari
main hoon naakaam juaari

daulat ki tujhe hasrat thhi
par maine pesh kiya dil
daulat ki tujhe hasrat thhi
par maine pesh kiya dil
achcha hi kiya o dilbar
jo toone bech diya dil
us preet ki kya keemat thhi bhala
jo tujhpe maine waari
main hoon badnaam juaari
main hoon naakaam juaari
har daaon zamaana jeeta
har baazi maine haari
main hoon badnaam juaari
main hoon naakaam juaari

Wah Atul ji! Aap ka jawab nahi! Yes! That is Shashi Kapoor! ‘Juari’ had three heroines: Nanda, Tanuja and Naaz. There’s this beautiful song..”Neendh ud jaye teri, chain se sone wale..” sung by Lata, Mubarak Begum and I’m not sure…I think it’s Suman Kalyanpur. It’s picturised on the three ladies.

Menon ji,
The song ‘neend ud jaye re’ is sung by Mubarak Begum,Suman Kalyanpur and Krishna Bose.
There is no Lata in this song.

I have to have glasses all the time. I keep one spare set in my purse always. Forgetting glasses in the office is simply not an option. I have often snuck out and gone to an optician nearby for glasses.

Apki lagan ki daad deni padegi, yehi hai sachcha junoon. 🙂

Indeed I will need to do that too. It is the second time in a week that it has happened with me. so may be my memory too is keeping pace with my eyes in ageing. 🙂

Thanks a lot for the info, Arunkumar ji. Is Krishna Bose the same as Krishna Kalle?

Menon ji,
No,they are different.
Krishna Bose was a Begali singer, having a solid place in Bangla films, both as an actress as well as a singer.her role of ‘Sutapa’ in Satyajit Ray’s 1972 film Pratidwandi (in English and Bangla) became memorable. In Hindi she sang very few songs,e.g. in films like Juari,Wafaadaar, kora Badan etc.
Krishna Kalle,a noted Marathi singer was very active in Hindi films during late 60s and 70s.She must have sung atleast 60-70 songs in films like Purnima,Khooni saayaa, sansar,Balidan, gehra Raaz etc etc.

Atul ji,
You must take good care of your eyes. When you have a number,it is best to use the specs all 24 hours(except while sleeping ofcourse). You can also use soothing eye drops every night, with your Doctor’s advice and prescription.
Out of the PANCHENDRIYAs, Eyes are the most important,as loss of any other faculty of panchendriyas, one can always depend and take help from other indriyas, but eyes are irreplaceable.
-AD

Thanks for the advise. I will try to follow your advise to the full because this indriya is of course extremely valuable.

Atulji,
I totally agree with Arunji’s advice. It’s ok if you can not post enough songs to your satisfaction on a particular day due to any reason. Life is so precious. God has given us all the Jewels in forms of different body parts, with eyes as the most precious one. Now, it’s our duty to protect that asset by using it, not abusing it. When I started using local train during my college years, my Mother used to tell us not to read in the train. She thought that it would affect my eye sight. It was hard to listen to her, specially during final exams, as I never wanted to waste that one hour of my train ride. Because of my motion sickness problem, I could never read in the train. I used to be jealous of all other students who could read in front of me in the train. Ye alag baat hai ki my motion sickness became “blessing in disguise” for me. Aap bura mat lagana, lekin shayad ye kahena ka haq samaj ti hoon. Please forgive me if you feel I have crossed my limit.

It is such a heartfelt and well meaning advice, why should I mind. I am on the other hand touched by your concern for the well being of my eyes.

hi atulji
actually i read ur post in the evening and wanted to tell welcome to the club of ageing “Chashmisses” but first and foremost we shd decided if we are aged? next i agree with you that reading, seeing Tv & staring at the comp spoils the eye. so i ve given up reading and only see movies on TV (not in cinema hall) but i can’t give up staring @ d comp and am forced to wear glasses for the last 6 months or the mere task of reading SMS is difficult as also reading newspaper etc.
but i think we will ve to follow the advice of the elders & sleep once in a while @ night. this is say as i ve seen that u post at night & early morning as well.

One gains experience on such matters the hard way and then this experience is of little use. We should have listened to the well meaning advises of our elders when we still had time.

Atulji, aapka kya kehna? I am simply floored by your dedication to the blog. This is what should be called passion. But please do take care of your eyes properly please.
Oh, that reminds me that I need to get my eyes also checked. TIll recently my eyesight was good enough. Now, I am cautious of the fact that even big letters displayed at a distance are appearing blurred. Before it becomes worse, I think I will take all your advices about protecting the jewels and go to an eye doctor. Thank you all for giving me a nudge 🙂
