Dil jawaani ke nashe se choor hai

This song under discussion is from the film “Birha ki Raat”(1950). Another song I discussed from this film the other day “bahut purdard hai aye sunnewaale”” starts with the sh’er :
jahaan mein jin ki ummeedon ke bede
paar hote hain
woh khush qismat hazaaron mein kahin
do chaar hote hain
‘Beda paar lagaana’ is a saying in hindi/urdu meaning ‘achieving the ambition or reaching ones destination. The word ‘Beda’ literally means a “Fleet of big ships”. The opposite of this saying in a curse “Beda garq ho teraa” or a lament “beda garq hogayaa”. “Garq’ is drowning in water. The special thing about these sayings or muhaavra’s which are used in urdu/hindi, is that they can be used backwards, forwards, in singular/plural,past/present tense, negative/positive and in varied situation they can be applied.
This song I am presenting today is ‘dil jawaani ke nashe se choor hain” which is exact opposite mood of the song “bahut purdard hai ae sunnewaale”. Another famous ‘muhaavra’ is used here in the second line which is an exclaimatory question line – ‘ kaun kehtaa hai ke Dilli door hai ‘ . Yeah ! ‘Dilli door hai’ means your destination/manzil/victory is still far away.
I have visited New Delhi recently for the first time. Which is a bit far away in spirit from the place called ‘Dilli”. The importance of this oldest capital city in the geopolitics and historical sense is well chronicled. I would like to share my own impressions of this city. I am dissapointed that I just had time to spend barely an evening in Delhi. I would have like to spend a few days and explore old city as well as the numerous historial monuments there. A few we managed to visit, but it has made me thirsty for more. And anyways as people keep telling me, it was absolutely the wrong time to visit Delhi, due to summer and soaring temperature. But we decided on impulse to visit Delhi/Agra while returning from our trip to Kashmir. And as soon as we reached Mumbai, my elder sister asks with her usual exuberance, ‘did you travel on the metro?”. My reply was, ‘Arey, metro is here to stay, and we will soon have our own metro in Mumbai. Delhi visit was more to capture the crumbling, fading, mellowing, yellowing and even balackened in some places, past. ” I hope to have a more extended visit to Delhi in future when I want to really soak in the atmosphere, where the past dwells side by side with the future.
About my visit to Agra and the Taj Mahal I am left with a feeling that we should have been there at least two decades ago. We regret leaving it too late.

Nahmji, thanks for this post. Very well-written.
A mention of Delhi usually makes me nostalgic because I spent a few years in Delhi back in the early 80s. There are a lot of historic places to see in Delhi, so a few hours on one evening is unlikely to be enough. Indeed on your next trip you should spend more time – like you say “to soak in the atmosphere, where the past dwells side by side with the future” (very well-said).
I myself want to visit Delhi one of these days – and re-visit these places that I last saw many years ago.
Coming to the song, I heard this song just a few days ago during one of my usual youtube surfing trips. 🙂 It deserves to be better-known. Am glad that you’ve brought it to the blog and given it its due here. Thanks.

This was my first visit, so you can imagine, i wanted to see what what & what not. I even wanted to see Mirza Ghalib’s home which is in old Delhi. Red Fort itself requires a day, so i had to make do with just photo session early morning outside the fort.

I don’t how i planning this trip so badly, it was all done at very short notice. And we changed plans, stayed an extra night at Agra. That’s the reason Delhi’s part was shortened. Anyway, I will surely give you a call next time.
