Wo apni yaad dilaane ko

Posted on: July 1, 2012

“Jugnu” (1947) was a breakthrough movie for Dilip Kumar. The success of this movie transformed Dilip Kumar from a struggler to an established actor.

“Jugnu” (1947) had Noorjahaan, Dilip Kumar, Gulam Mohammad, Sulochana, Latika, Agha Mirza, Jillo Bai etc in it.

Two songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Thery were serious songs that are well known even today.

Here is a light hearted comedy song from “Jugnu” (1947). This song is not all that well known today. But this song is a trivia buff’s delight. The light hearted song is picturised as a fun song among college boys who sing this song about girl students of their college, with one of them trying to mimic the voice of a female in this song.

This song is described as having been sung by Rafi but there are other voices too that need to be identified. There are at least three other voices in this song excluding the chorus. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the other singing voices.

One trivia of great interest about the picturisation is the fact that Rafi too is visible in the picturisation. He is one of the students in the song. In the video, he is visible at 17th second, then from 1:47 to 1:59 onwards (lip syncing in his own voice) and also from 2:52 to 3:07 (lip syncing as chorus).

The song is written by Asghar Sarhadi. Music is composed by Feroz Nizami.

The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Song-Wo apni yaad dilaane ko ik ishq ki duniya chhod gaye (Jugnu)(1947) Singer-Rafi, unknown singer 1, unknown singer 2, Unknown singer3, Lyrics-Asghar Sarhadi, MD-Feroz Nizami

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

woh apni yaad dilaane ko
ik ishq ki duniya chhod gaye
woh apni yaad dilaane ko
ik ishq ki duniya chhod gaye

jaldi mein
jaldi mein lipstick bhool gaye
rumaal puraana chhod gaye

jaldi mein lipstick bhool gaye
rumaal puraana chhod gaye
woh apni yaad dilaane ko
ik ishq ki duniya chhod gaye
woh apni yaad dilane ko

aashiq jo hue thhe ham un par
din raat lagaate thhe chakkar
din raat lagaate thhe chakkar
sab kuchh to bataaya ham ne magar
pitt jaane ka qissa chhod gaye
sab kuchh to bataaya ham ne magar
pitt jaane ka qissa chhod gaye
woh apni yaad dilaane ko
ik ishq ki duniya chhod gaye
woh apni yaad dilaane ko

aa aa aa aa
aaa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
muflis thhe janaab e majnu bhi
sunte hain jab unki maut aayi
paakit se na nikli ik paai
laila ka woh kutta chhod gaye
paakit se na nikali ik paai
laila ka woh kutta chhod gaye
woh apni yaad dilaane ko
ik ishq ki duniya chhod gaye
woh apni yaad dilane ko

aaaa aaaa
aaaa
aa aa aa aa

talwaar dikha kar ham ne kaha
karti ho hamen tum kyun rusvaa

sun log kisi din, muralidhar
is ishq mein duniya chhod gaye

sun log kisi din, muralidhar
is ishq mein duniya chhod gaye
woh apni yaad dilaane ko
ik ishq ki duniya chhod gaye

hamko akela aa aa
chhod gaye

hahahaha

Mohammed Rafi made his first screen appearance in LAILA MAJNU (1945) and sang a part of the song on himself along with S D Batish.
Partial video link of the song : http://youtu.be/vECKC40DW9Q

Rafi can be seen singing at 0:35 in this video.

This is a wonderful song. I had seen this song on youtube, but never got around to sending the lyrics.
There are a few lines by chorus all three/four singers.

And in the last stanza the line ‘ karti ho hamen tum kyun rusvaa ‘ is also in Rafi’s voice. It is possible that he might have changed the voice to sing a line or two.

Nice reminder today. He appeared in a few songs on screen during those early days. He is visible in the ‘Shaheed’ song too.
