Lesser known singers- Singer 2 (Pinakin Shah)

Gujarat being the nearest state from Bombay, it was easy for aspirants from there to visit Bombay and try their luck in the metropolitan city. As such Gujarati community has a sizeable presence in Bombay. Gujaratis are very active in almost every activity in all the fields of Film making, be it Acting, Direction, Production, Technical or Music .

Being close by, it was easy to shuttle between Bombay and Gujarat and operate in both the states. Many Hindi movie singers, composers, actors etc have contributed substantially to Gujarati Film industry and vice versa. Even Non-Gujarati singers like Mukesh(his wife was a Gujarati-Sarlaben),Lata, Asha, Rafi, Geeta and some others have sung many Filmy and Non filmy songs in Gujarati. Similarly Actors too have acted in Gujarati films. Likewise, for those who were established in Gujarat, Bombay was an additional playfield.

In the music field we find many Gujrati composers and singers trying their hands in Bombay too. I am not talking about established musicians like Madhulal Master, S.K.Desai, Avinash Vyas, Balsara, Ajit Merchant etc, but those who tried their luck in Bombay film industry but failed here, like Jayanti Joshi, Indravadan Bhatt, Vidyanath Seth etc. Among singers, there were people whose main contribution was in Gujarati but they tried few songs in Bombay films too, but failed like Badrinath Vyas, for example.

Today we will take a look at PINAKIN SHAH.

Pinakin was a singer and composer who failed in Hindi but was successful in Gujarati.

He was born on 27-1-1921 at Mehsana. His father Damodardas was a musician singer. After passing 10th std., he took music lessons from his father. Pinakin came to Bombay in 1944. He stayed with his sister at Bandra. His brother in law, Pitambar Shah was employed in the film industry. Pinakin first started singing on AIR stations. Soon Avinash Vyas gave him training and opportunity to sing in Gujarati films.

His first Hindi song was a solo with chorus, in Gaurav(1947), under the composer Shanti Kumar Desai. Then came Ghar ki Bahu, Nanad Bhowjai, Roop Sundari, Mahapooja and Jagadguru Shankaracharya. His last film song was in Matlabi Duniya(1961),along with Purushottam. His most famous song was “Haariye na himmat’-a Kabir Bhajan, sung along with Amirbai Karnataki, in the film Mahapooja.

After this he shifted to Gujarat and continued with composing and singing successfully in Gujrati movie industry.

He however, returned to Bombay to give music to a Hindi film ‘Ek Aurat Do Joote'(1978). To his misfortune, the film was not released at all, so he went back dejected.

Here we will listen to a song from the film JAGADGURU SHANKARACHARYA (1955). It is sung by Geeta Dutt, Pinakin Shah and chorus. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by Avinash Vyas.

Same song in Gujrati movie “Sonbai ni chundadi”. Music is by Avinash Vyas only.

Part-2 of the audio clip with different lyrics : http://youtu.be/vQykGltaGdA

However, I find that there is no repeat of the mukhda of the song in part-2. Probably, this may be the continuation of the song.

Sadanandji,
I don’t know if this Part-2 was used by Avinash Vyasji in either this movie or as a private song. However, if you listen to the part from 4:30 on the clip of Gujrati song and then listen to the chorus part of this Part-2, tune is same and few words also. So, looks like AV used only the chorus part/tune of this P-2 of Hindi movie in the Gujrati song. It was very informative post by Arunji and you made it interesting by providing the second part of it. Thanks to both of you.
