A Shammi Kapoor song is always the quintessential Shammi Kapoor song. With very little apparent effort and with minimum movements, the amount of expression and energy that this powerhouse actor is able to pack into the edifice of a single song, it is simply amazing. The tiny twitches of the neck, the small movements of the fingers and the hands, the rolling and shifting eyes – small signals that are able to communicate a whole nine yard story.

The film is the 1966 production of ‘Preet Na Jaane Reet’, released under the banner of Moviestan, Bombay. It is directed by S Bannerjee. The star cast includes Shammi Kapoor, B Saroja Devi, Siddhu, Johnny Walker, Nazir Hussain, Dhoomal, Praveen Chaudhry, Meenu Mumtaz, Shammi, Randhir, Shiv ji, Shroff,Razia etc.

The seven songs in this film are penned by four poets, viz. Indeevar, Qamar Jalaalabaadi, Anand Bakshi and Gulshan Baawra. This particular song is penned by Qamar Jalaalabaadi. The music composition are from the baton of Kalyan ji Anand ji. Two wonderful songs from this film are already posted here. Here is the third offering from this film.

From the viewing of the film, this here is the first song in the film. The situations is the predictable, heroine’s-car-has-a-puncture-hero-offers-help-asked-to-mind-his-own-business. With some variations, this is an oft repeated scenario on the Hindi screen. B Saroja Devi is driving with her friends, when one tyre on their car is punctured. Shammi Kapoor is present with an offer to help. It is apparent that the two had some not-so-pleasant encounter a few minutes earlier, and B Saroja Devi refuses the offer of help by this apparent good samaritan. He is asked to mind his own business, and leave the place. Of course the director had other designs in his mind, and the hero promptly launches into this song.

And so, let’s also get going with these two warring young hearts on the screen, and enjoy this fun song sung just perfectly by Rafi Saab, and performed so well by Shammi Kapoor. Cheers.

yoon na dekho hamen baar baar
ho na jaaye kahin hum se pyaar

Hey, don’t look at me so
Again and again
So watch out
You might just fall in love with me

nazren milaa ke deewaana banaa doon
dekhun shamaa ko parwaana banaa doon
bach ke zaraa rehnaa ji, hum se nahin kehna ji
chheenaa dil e beqaraar
aji dil ka hai kyaa aitbaar
ho na jaaye kahin hum se pyaar

I could make your heart swoon
Just by looking at you
I could make the arrogant flame
Into a craving lover
Stay away, and don’t blame me later
That I stole away you impatient heart
This heart is so fickle, so impulsive
So watch out
You might just fall in love with me

saanwali saloni ye surat hai pyaari
de do ijaazat to jaaun mein waari
ye jhuki jhuki aankhen
ye ruki ruki saansen
mohabbat ka pehlaa khumaar
umr bhar na milegaa qaraar
ho na jaaye kahin hum se pyaar

Ah this bronzed and cute face
It’s so lovely
If I have your consent
I would sacrifice my all
On the beauty of your face
Oh these lowered evasive eyes
And these short and hesitant breaths
Reveal the first flush of love
Lifelong now, your heart will not be at peace
And maybe so
You might just fall in love with me
