Posted on: December 14, 2012

“Guide” (1965) was a Navketan Productions movie. It was directed by Vijay Anand. The movie had Dev Anand, Waheeda Rehman, Kishore Sahu, Jagirdar, Anwar, Ulhas, Parveen Paul, Purnima, Krishan Dhawan, Leela Chitnis, Rashid Khan etc in it.

This movie had music that has been voted as among the most popular music of all time by Hindi movie insiders in a poll that was conducted by Outlook magazine in 2006.

As many as six songs from “Guide” (1965) have been discussed in the past. Here is the seventh song from this movie. This song is the well known timeless classic “piya tose naina laage re”. This song is sung by Lata and chorus and it is picturised on Waheeda Rehman and others.

Shailendra, whose 46 th death anniversary falls today (14 december 2012) was the lyricist. Music was composed by S D Burman.

Here is this extremely long (over 8 minutes long) song. Watching and /or listening to this song is a treat for the senses.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

This song was not posted before? :o. What a wonderful musical blockbuster Guide was. There are still a few songs to be covered in this movie. Whenever I think of the movie Guide, the opening scene, Dev Anand walking out of jail, and deciding where to go, and S D Burman singing the background song, “Wahan Kaun Hai Tera”.. sheer brilliance.

Talking about Shailendra Ji, yesterday I was watching a programme on TV where apparently Shailendra Ji’s grand daughter is / has sued the team of Dabangg 2 for using the song “Chalat Musafir” from the movie “Teesri Kasam” as part of the song “Pandeyji Seeti Bajaaye” without permission.

I call such quality of songs as ‘speechless’ songs – the listeners become speechless. Waheeda Rehman’s dance, Vijay Anand’s picturisation of song, Shailendra’s lyrics, Lata’s rendition and S D Burman’s music – all blended in unison to become one of the immortal songs of ‘Guide’..

Atul ji,
A trivia about this song…..
This is No.5 longest song so far in Hindi Films,8.58 minutes.
The first 4 are…
1) Pahli yatra-Lambi gaatha-Sampoorn Teerth yatra-1970
Song in 4 parts of 10.5 minutes each-a total of 42 minutes !
2) Na to karwan ki talaash hai- 4 parts of total 12.5 minutes
3) Raj kanwar’s film with chandrachur singh and mahima chaudhari
12 minutes long.
4) jab jab mujhko pukare-Kurban-2009 10.54 minutes

Our readers may be knowing some more long songs. The above info is from my memory.

Thank you very much, Arun ji for this Trivia:

Raj Kanwar`s 1999 Movie “Daag:The fire” starring sanjay dutt,mahima chaudhary,chandrachur singh, raj babbar,Susham Seth,Shakti Kapoor(music by Rajesh Roshan)

Kurban (1991)starring Ayesha Jhulka,Salman khan,Sunil Dutt,Kabir bedi directed by Deepak Bahry(Music by Anand Milind)
(song must be “TU jab jab mujhko pukaare, main daudi aaoon nadiyaa kinaare”)

Thanks for this information.

Goldie(Vijay Anand`s pet Name)saab, rules over my heart in his song picturisation. Simply AWESOME.
(SDB,Shailendra,Lata,Waheeda deadly combination)

Still,I miss his direction. He is very very good even his not so successful movies.
If my memory serves me right, during his last days, he is on his way to finish directing a movie called “Janaa na dil se door”,
What happened to that movie ????
I read somewhere he got a son, who was interested in movie business.Whether anyone know about this movie.

Prakash ji,
This film was completed, music was released and promos were aired in 2001,but there were no takers.
here is something about that film-

Arun ji

So sweet of you for answering my query, with such speed.
Ek din,Main Bombay aa jaaoongaa aapke paas, aapko personally thanks dene, par now please accept this.

Thanks and thanks again and again.

Regards & Love
PRakash

Just love this song. And Waheeda’s dance.
In fact I love all the songs of Guide. Every single one.

It is a treat to see this song entirely. It is a gorgeous song.

Khyati ji,

What do i say about this song. Just like ‘Abhimaan’ the songs of this film are also so my very dearest and favourite’st. About SDB what i feel is , the songs would be few but they would all be of highest quality.

Btw, i thougtht of this song so many times, that i might have sent lyrics of this song to in one of my lengthy emails of 10-12 songs. When it was not posted i thought maybe Atul ji is keeping this ICONIC song for Golden Jubilee year of ‘Guide’ which would be in 2015.

See, not for nothing, i have been accused of thinking far far ahead. ‘bahut door ka sochti hoon’.

The remaining song which is to be posted in this film is ‘gaata rahe meraa dil ‘(Kishore-Lata) the only duet in the film. So can we wait till 2015 for this song ?

Nahm ji,
I must have given hard time to Atulji for this song, by repeatedly sending this song few times. Sorry Atulji for that. This movie, like everybody has said, IS ONE OF THE TOP CLASS CLASSIC MOVIE that Hindi Cinema has produced. Everything is just perfect. Kuchh bhool naikaal hi nahin sakte. The beauty that Waheeda ji had is not even close to the Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss Asis Pacific or whatever these title holders claim.
Regarding waiting till 2015 to post this song- You must be aware of the “so called” fact that on Dec 21st, 2012, The Mayan calender ends (or the World?) So, it would be right time to enjoy it right now. 😆 Gaata rahe mera dil…..gaana Dec 21st ke baad post kar denge, to celebrate victory over the “forecast”. Just kidding!
So many people are flying on Dec 21st thinking they will be safe in the air. Yeh to joke jaisa ho gaya- they don’t think if the world ends, there won’t be Earth, to airplane kahaan land karega? 😆
Have a wonderful day!

hullo Khyatiji
that joke abt flying on 21st Dec. a very good one. & if world ends on 21st dec. then y r people preparing for Christmas??? 😕

The end of ‘Mayan calender on 21/12/12, is as good as the other mayan philosophy. Mayan’s also believed that the future is behind us as we cannot see it and past is in front of us as we have seen it . In other words it is like walking backwards towards (future) . 🙂

Time running backwards is as it is an obsession with some people.

Regards.

Thank you Atulji for posting this song. but so late in our atuldom? hmm sochne wali baat hain!!! how many more such songs r left?
this is song shares the top slot on my list of favorites (as far as dance numbers go) the other being “Hoton pe aisi baat ” from “Jewel Thief”. both have different reasons for being on my list though.

This number was originally meant for the film Devdas (1955) as a background piece on Suchitra Sen, with Dilip Kumar appearing towards its end.

It was the work of the same combination of Shailendra-Burman-Lata. Wordings of that number were slightly different and so was the music. It is on YouTube at https://youtu.be/zop8gtGWj18.

It finally surfaced as this famed Guide dance number a decade later.

Shekhar ji,

The uploader of the video link you have given, has clearly mentioned that he has used the scenes from ‘Devdas’ (1955) for the song from ‘Guide’ (1965). In the video, scenes from ‘Devdas’ were juxtaposed on the audio of the song from ‘Guide’. This misinformation has also been in circulation in the social medias.

In other words, this song was NOT originally meant for ‘Devdas’ (1955). It was freshly composed for ‘Guide’ (1965).

The lyricist for ‘Devdas’ (1955) was Sahir Ludhinavi and NOT Shailendra.
