Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Jhulna jhulaave Nandlala

Posted on: December 31, 2012

This article is written by Vidur Sury, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a new contributor to this blog.

Here is the second song of the tribute series to great playback singer and singer – actress Amirbai Karnataki Ji. This is her second song from the major hit Narsi Bhagat (1940). One duet of Amirbai and Durga Khote from this film has already been discussed.

This song is another beautiful Bhajan which was quite popular during its time. Amirbai Ji sings and acts it with great devotion and most pleasingly, and the music and lyrics are also very beautiful. In the picturisation, as per Gujarati tradition, a small image of crawling baby Lord Krishna is placed in a cradle and swung with great devotion. Vishnupant Pagnis Ji and Durga Khote Ji, lead actors of the film, can also be seen in the background. Amirbai sings it melodiously with wonderful clarity of words, and I could decipher the lyrics correctly.

Song–Jhulna jhulaawe nandlala(Narsi Bhagat)(1940) Singers – Amirbai Karnataki, Lyrics – Sampatlal Shrivastav Anuj, Baalam, MD – Shankarrao Vyaas

Lyrics

jhulna jhulaave nandlala
jhoole pyaari raadhika aa
jhoole pyaari raadhika aa
jhulna jhulaave nandlala
jhoole pyaari raadhika aa
jhoole pyaari raadhika

mohan gal baah diye
mohan gal baanh diye
nav umang dhaari hiye
nav umang dhaari hiye
jhulna jhulaave nandlala
jhoole pyaari raadhika aa
jhoole pyaari raadhika

do chakor do hain chandra
do chakor do hain chandra
dowun hansen mand mand
dowun hansen mand mand
kunj kunj ati anand
kunj kunj ati anand
nirakhat mukh chandra ko
pyaari raadhika aa
jhoole pyaari raadhika aa
jhulna jhulaave nandlala
jhoole pyaari raadhika aa
jhoole pyaari raadhika

Very nice ! What a find ! I did not know Ameerbai was so pretty too ! How did you manage to get such a clear sound ? Thanks a whole lot!
I grew up with Ameerbai’s songs !

Wow! That’s great! So great to know. She did quite a lot of films as an actress.

Luckily there are some good quality releases of VCDs and we can get such good songs 🙂 Generally though songs from records are much, much better than those of films.

Vidur ji

Thanks for posting this wonderfully rare gem of a song. The bhajan is really endearing.

My pleasure Sir. I also just love it.

Iam very excited to post songs by such a stalwart. Iam shortly (after one more song from this film) going to post her songs as the most sought after playback singer of 1940s. I really hope you will enjoy those.

Vidurji,
Thanks for the bhajan. Reminded me of my days in India when on Janamashthami day, my Mother would decorate jhulaa and our “Laalji” (that’s what Gujarati vaishnav would say refering to a baby Krishna) would sit in it like a Raaja.
Ameerbai ji really looks so beautiful with a big “bindi” on her forehead. Her facial expression are also divine.
