Chadhhti jawaani mein jhoolo jhoolo meri raani

Posted on: January 4, 2013

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Hindi film music became people oriented, in the real sense, from Khazanchi-1941. Till then HFM was ,as if, in the clutches of Classical and stage music.

The begining of the Fifth decade of the 20th century was a revolutionary period for Film Industry. Mehboob, Kardar, K.Asif, V.Shantaram, Filmistan etc established their own studios and started producing meaningful cinemas. It also brought a new dimension to film music. This decade showed that Good Music, on its own, can make a film successful at the box-office, irrespective of other factors like cast, plot etc.

HFM was now free from old and antiquated slow music. One after another music oriented films started being made. It also gave plenty of opportunities to talented composers like C.Ramchandra, Naushad, Anil Biswas, S D Burman, Husnalal Bhagatram, Khemchand Prakash, Bulo C Rani, Vinod, Khursid Anwar etc.

Young rising singers like Noorjehan, Suraiya, Lata, Asha, Geeta, Rafi, Mukesh, Talat flourished in this period.

The fifth decade gave us musical films like, Khazanchi, Basant, Khandan, Ratan, Shehnai, Anmol Ghadi, Andaz, Badi Behan, Ek thi ladki, Patanga, Barsat, Mahal etc etc. Almost every alternate film was musical.

The Golden Era had arrived.

Filmistan’s popular film Shehnai-47 also played an important role in the history of HFM.

C.Ramchandra came into his own with this film. As newer experiments were made in HFM, the next big contribution ,after Ghulam Hyder(Khazanchi),came from C.Ramchandra. He was trained under Vinayakbuwa Patwardhan. He began as a Music Director in Tamil films and he entered Hindi movies with ‘Sukhi Jeevan’-42. He was influenced by Benny Goodman and his orchestra. He introduced western instruments in Hindi films in a big way. He used the Alto Saxin combination with Guitar, Harmonica and also introduced Whistling in songs. He always used Bongo, Oboe, trumpet, Clarinets and Saxophone mixing Scat and Rock Rhythms. But it must also be remembered that C.Ramchandra was equally adept in composing Gazals, Geets and Thumris, much before Madan mohan and Khayyam did so.

SHEHNAI-47 was a welcome relief to Indian audience who were already disturbed with the Political upheaval in the country. Songs like Aana meri jaan meri jaan sunday ke sunday were on everyone’s lips. Its music was enchanting, the story was novel and direction was slick.

Shehnai was a story of a Father(V H Desai),having 4 Daughters (Rehana, Kumkum,Rekha, and Dulari) of marriageable age. There was a Zamindar(S L Puri) with a crook daughter(Indubala) and a supercrook secretary(Radha Kishen). The film was hilarious with every girl’s efforts to get a partner for marriage. Kishor Kumar ,in the Second film of his career, played the role of a Police Inspector’s ,but got no songs to sing here.

Many readers may not be knowing who this V H Desai was. He was a famous and extremely popular Comedian from late 30s to 40s. He was a law Graduate from Baroda, but instead of joining courts, he opted for films. His style was typical-fast delivery of dialogues. He was very poor in remembering Dialogues and required many retakes. As per Ashok kumar,i n one of the Bombay Talkies films(Kangan), he took as many as 75 retakes. The German Director Franz Osten was so furious that he told Desai ” if you were not so popular a comedian in India, I would have thrown you out long back” !

Starting with Sagar Movietone, he did Capt. Kirti Kumar, Bhabhi and Navjeevan ,and then joined Bombay talkies(Jhoola, Kangan, Naya Sansar, Kismet etc). He acted in initial films of Filmistan, from where he was taken by P L Santoshi for Shehnai and Khidki. Later he did Shaheed and Andaz. In Andaz-49 he did the funny role of DDT-i.e. prof. Devdas Dharamdas Trivedi. The role was specially written for him.

Desai died of heart attack in 1949.

Here is a song from SHEHNAI-47,sung by Chitalkar,Geeta Dutt and Binapani Mukherjee, with Chorus. This is the last remaining song of this film to be posted.
