Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ye gotedaar lehanga nikloon jab daal ke

Posted on: February 26, 2013

This article is written by Peevesie’s mom, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I have felt like writing after many days. Many reasons for the long absence. But I just had to write when I remembered this particular song. First because of the unusual pairing –Rajesh Khanna Reena Roy, second I found that this was a different Naushad song ( I do not know if he has given music to any Rajesh Khanna movie. IMDB says this is the only one) And then lastly it was very popular during my growing up years.

I had not seen the movie then but I have seen it quite a number of times in recent years thanks to cable TV and satellite TV. Another thing hat ke about this movie is the story– though very normal for those days (lost and found), in this movie the separated brothers (Rajesh Khanna & Jeetendra) do not end up on the opposite sides of the law. Both of them are crooks. They are reared by small time crooks— M. Rajan & Mukri. And Raaj Kumar & Waheeda Rehman play parents of these two. And then there was Amjad Khan in a double role. Then the brothers come together to take revenge from Jwala Singh (Amjad Khan junior) for all the atrocities commited on their family by Chandan Singh (Amjad khan senior) how nice no???? Baap ka badla bete se!! how very original !!!

This song is a duet by Mohd Rafi & Asha Bhonsle. This is a train song like “Cheel cheel chilla ke kajri sunaaye” (Half Ticket) & “Pal Do Pla Ka Saath Hamaara” (The Burning Train) and there are many more such songs in our blog. We can see Agha, Bhagawan Dada and Sunder enjoying themselves in the song.

Song-Ye gotedaar lehanga nikloon jab daal ke (Dharamkanta)(1982) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

yeh gotedaar lehenga nikloon jab daal ke
yeh gotedaar lehenga nikloon jab daal ke
yeh gotedar lehenga nikloon jab daal ke
chhuriyaan chal jaayen
chhuriyaan chal jaayen meri matwaali chaal pe
chhuriya chal jaayen meri matwaali chaal pe
jalwe phir dekh gori meri bhi chaal ke
jalwe phir dekh gori meri bhi chaal ke
chunri bandh jaaye
chunri bandh jaaye teri mere rumaal se
chunri bandh jaaye teri mere rumaal se

diri dara diri dara diri dara diri da
ek toh baabu sheeshe jaisi chikni meri jawaani
dooje umar mastaani
ek toh baabu sheeshe jaisi chikni meri jawaani
dooje umar mastaani
ho o o
mere badan pe aisi phisli teri nazar deewaani
jaise dhalkta paani
paani
ankhiyaan milaana humse chaliya sambhaal ke
ankhiyaan milaana humse chaliyaa sambhaal ke
chhuriyaan chal jaayen
chhuriyaan chal jaayen meri matwaali chaal pe
chunri bandh jaaye teri mere rumaal se

he ae ae
aaj haamari ek nazar ne kya aafat kar daali
dekh zara matwaali
aaj hamaari ek nazar ne kya aafat kar daali
dekh zara matwaali
kahaan kahaan se maski teri kurti reshamwaali
jhalke badan ki laali
laali
tu bhi kamaal ki hai hum bhi kamaal ke
tu bhi kamal ki hai hum bhi kamaal ke
chunri band jaaye
chunri band jaaye teri mere rumaal se

chhuriyaan chal jaaye meri matwaali chaal pe

diri dara diri dara diri dara diri da
man ke chor nahin chalne doon aaj tumhaari chori
main albeli chhori
man ke chor nahin chalne doon aaj tumhaari chori
main albeli chhori
main toh uda loon aankh se kaajal chaahe khuli hon gori
donon ankhiyan tori

ja ja
aison ko rakhti hoon main kheese mein daalke
aison ko rakhti hoon main kheese mein daalke
chhuriyaan chal jaayen
chhuriyaan chal jaayen meri matwaali chaal pe
Chunri bandh jaaye teri mere rumaal se

Peevesie’s mom ji

Thanks for the lyrics of the song. This song is a favourite of Vividhbharthi radio station and through Radio, became a favourite of mine also.

Typical Sultan Ahmed movie revolving around Dhaku, Mujra, revenge,Dharam-Masaaledaar aur mere liye mazedaar bhi :)I have seen this movie because it has got a lot of Character artistes.Got good music also and a lavish sets which is a typical Sultan Ahmed movie characteristic feature.
Always in Sultan Ahmed`s movies one mujra song got to be there and it is always picturised in a lavish set fully decorated with glass pieces(visit movies his Ganga ki Saugandh,Heera,Dataa,Jai vikrantaa)

Just a trivia that`s all:
Naushad provided music for Mumtaz`s Aaina(1977), in which Rajesh Khanna made a special appearance(and Rajesh Khanna don`t have a song to lip sync).

And Reena Roy starred with Rajesh Khanna in Dhanwan(1981)(not romantically, in which Rajesh khanna`s character has got grey shades-He is after Reena roy, who was paired with Rakesh Roshan)and I think Rekha and Reena roy were romantic heroines against Rajesh Khanna in Asha Jyothi(1984)

curious to know what gotedaar means, anybody can help?

gota means Zari or brocade lace

sorry for misleading meaning and thanks for my updating my knowledge about gotedaar lehegaa

Whether gotedaar means
lehenga with designs of small black goli shaped imprint(i.e.,”polka dotted” lehengaa)
(lehengaa stitched out of cloth piece which does have imprint of small black circles)
(gotaa means goli or a circle) ? By this I am updating my knowledge .Am I right ?? I am taking chances.Someone correct me If I am wrong.

I remember seeing this movie on a trip to Calcutta in 1982. It was a night show, I’d gone with a couple of friends. When I returned to the hotel room where I was staying I discovered that my brand-new Vimal suiting pant had been cleanly cut and my wallet had been pickpocketed.

I remember being quite upset at that time – not so much about the wallet (though it had about Rs100-150, decent amount of money at that time) but more about the pant. It had been tailormade for me and was quite expensive. I tried to get it stitched so that the tear wouldn’t be visible but it never quite came out well. I therefore didn’t wear the pant again.

So my memory of this movie has to do with my memory of that pickpocketing experience. See, how movies are often associated with a personal experience. 🙂

Chalo, Kalkatte mein ye bhi experience kar liya. 🙂 Btw, that was the very last time in my life that I’ve kept my wallet in my back pocket.

Coming to the song, I remember it as the most popular song of the movie. Quite catchy. Thanks, Peevisie’s mom for the write-up.

Nice Post ! i have not got to watch this movie , but the song was quite popular and was regular on Binaca Geetmala. I do not like it very much at that time for the reason i do not know … may be we like the songs by Kishore very much then …! thanks for the post and yes Reena Roy was there in Asha-Jyoti (1984) with Rekha also there with Rajesh Khanna.

Peevisie’s Mom

Thanks for reminding this song. Long time ago this was a regular on Vividh Bharati. Reminds me of a Reena Roy song from ‘Baghawat’ . I have the lyrics of that song ready, just have to find it in my drafts mails.
