Ek jaanib shamm e mehfil

Posted on: March 17, 2013

This article is written by Pamir Harvey, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

This song from Abhilasha (1968) is not so well known like the other two featured songs on the blog here. It is a Rafi-Manna Dey duet. Roshan used this combination of voices brilliantly in his qawaalis. This song, I think is the first time that Pancham uses this pair of voices.

From the setting of the song it looks like to be one of the picnic songs, which abound in Hindi films. These picnics are mostly used by heroes to woo their heroines, mostly with positive results. Here the song is sung by the hero (Sanjay Khan) and a flamenco dancer (Oscar Unger). Besides Nanda, one can also sees a very young Jayshree T as the female counterpart of the flamenco dancer. One would say the music does not remind one much of flamenco, but don’t forget we are in the realm of Hindi films. And if one forgets the flamenco costume the dance is not that bad at all.

Lyrics

aa aa aa
ek jaanib shamm-e-mehfil
ek jaanib shamm-e-mehfil
ek jaanib rooh-e-jaanaa
oo girta hai dekhen
kahaan parwaanaa
ek jaanib shamm-e-mehfil

ek jaanib shamm-e-mehfil
ho o ek jaanib rooh-e-jaanaa
ho o girta hai dekhen
kahaan parwaanaa
ek jaanib shamm-e-mehfil

ek su ek sholaa
charaagon ki anjuman mein ae ae
ek su rang-e-jalwaa
kisi but ke baankpan mein
ek sholaa ek jalwaa
aur inmine ek deewaanaa
ek jaanib shamm-e-mehfil
ho o ek jaanib rooh-e-jaanaa
ho o girta hai dekhen
kahaan parawaanaa
ek jaanib shamm-e-mehfil

uski kyaa hai manzil
nahin itnaa bekhabar bhi ee ee
aayaa dilbaron mein
to hai kaafi ek nazar bhi

in nazron ko yaaro
kyaa jaanoon main anjaanaa
ek jaanib shamm-e-mehfil
ek jaanib rooh-e-jaanaa
ho o o girta hai dekhen
kahaan parawaanaa
ek jaanib shamm-e-mehfil

hmm hmm hmm aahaa
laa laa lalaa laa laa lalaa

kyaa kyaa rang nikle
haseenon ki saadgi se
hoo oo oo oo itni hai shikaayat
ke milte hain ajnabi se

jo aisaa beparwaa
kyaa us se dil uljhaanaa
ek jaanib shamm-e-mehfil
ho o ek jaanib rooh-e-jaanaa
hoo girtha hai dekhen
kahaan parawaanaa
ek jaanib shamm-e-mehfil
ek jaanib rooh-e-jaanaa
hoo girta hai dekhen
kahaan parawaanaa
ek jaanib shamm-e-mehfil

आ आ आ

ek jaanib shamm-e-mehfil, ek jaanib rooh-e-jaanaa
girta hai dekhen kahaan parwaanaa

On the one hand prevails
The flaming light of the party
On the other side reigns
The life of my soul
Aah to which side would turn
The impassioned wasp
Searching for succor

ek su ek sholaa charaagon ki anjuman mein ae ae
ek su rang-e-jalwaa kisi but ke baankpan mein
ek sholaa ek jalwaa aur in mein ek deewaanaa

In a bevy of shining lamps
A sizzling ember sparkles on one side
And on the other side shimmers
The colorful splendor of a youthful beauty
Aah, a sizzling ember
And a colorful splendor
And an ardent forlorn heart
Between them

uski kyaa hai manzil nahin itnaa bekhabar bhi
aayaa dilbaron mein to hai kaafi ek nazar bhi
in nazron ko yaaro kyaa jaanoon main anjaanaa

The destination she seeks
I am not unaware of that
In the company of loving hearts
Just a glance is enough to give the message
Ah but, I am a novice, unfamiliar
What do I know this language of the eyes

kyaa kyaa rang nikle haseenon ki saadgi se
itni hai shikaayat ke milte hain ajnabi se
jo aisaa beparwaah kyaa us se dil uljhaanaa

Aah, this wondrous simplicity of the beauties
Many a colors it radiates
But the beauties are heartless
They meet as if are strangers
Let them be, why to entangle hearts
With such indifferent friends

Nice post Harvey ji ! though ‘pyaar hua jabse’ and ‘waadiyaan mera daaman’ are my favorite from this movie.
When i do not totally recall about the story of this movie, as i must have watched it with father at very young age, but it songs ‘pyaar hua hain jabse’ was always there in my memory, so i got its VCD two years back and enjoyed it a lot !

Avinashji, thank you for the appreciation!
The two songs you have mentioned are my favs as well. The Asha Bhosle song ‘munne mere aa’, which will feature here soon is also good.
I haven’t seen the movie as yet. Hope to remedy that some day.

Unfortunately the video is not very clear here. Really wanted to get a look at the young Oscar. The song is super. Don’t remember watching the movie when I was young either. The name is nice, Abhilasha.
